50 Is Not Old | What To Wear While Losing WeightI have had several of you ask about what to wear while you are losing weight. First off, I want to say CONGRATULATIONS!!! Second, I understand where you are coming from. You don’t really want to spend a lot of money on clothing, if you are planning on losing more weight. But, you are starting to look sloppy, with your clothing being to big and baggy. Your new body feels and looks different, and you can’t dress it the same way you did when you were heavier.50 Is Not Old | What To Wear While Losing WeightI would recommend doing a wardrobe similar to a capsule wardrobe. I thought about what I would want in my own wardrobe if I was in a transition phase. You would probably want to stay with the basics in order to get the most bang for your buck. The most basic colors for pants to me are black, white, navy, and khaki. I would want to buy a pair of jeans, and a pair of pants in each of these colors.

Jeans: Jag (Misses, Petite) | Plus

Black Pants: Pixie | Karen Kane | Petite | Plus

White Pants: Talbots (misses, petite, plus) | Ankle

Navy Pants: Chino’s | Pixie Long | Pixie Ankle | Plus

Khaki Pants: Calvin Klein | Tahari | Talbots (misses, petite, plus)

For tops, I would again stick with the basics. I would buy a top in black, white, navy, yellow, and red. If you hate red, go with pink instead. If yellow is not your best color, then choose orange, green, purple, etc.

Black Top: Tunic | Tank | Lace Trimmed

White Top: Bell Sleeve | Capped Sleeve | Tunic

Navy Top: Ruffle  | High Low | V Neck

Yellow Top: Tank | Button Up

Red Top: Tank | Wrap | Tunic

Then I would add one skirt and two printed cardigan. You should already have accessories like scarves and jewelry to help take the outfits from the boring side.

Skirt: Jean | White | Floral

Printed Cardigan: Abstract | Floral | Watercolors

With just these few items you can make a wardrobe that will be mix and match easily. All these colors go with the other. I picked yellow and red tops because they work well with all the basic colors. By choosing two printed cardigans, you can add interest to a plain outfit.50 Is Not Old | What To Wear While Losing WeightI have on a navy top that I think I purchased at TJ Maxx. I like the cut away designs in the top for added interest. I wore a white camisole under the top so you could see the details.50 Is Not Old | What To Wear While Losing WeightI carried my Coach purse that I traded my BFF Bertha for years ago. I thought the lime green in the leaves matched my capris.50 Is Not Old | What To Wear While Losing WeightThese lime green capris are probably over 5 years old. I used to wear them a lot, but in the last few years I don’t think I have worn them. When I pulled them out of the closet, I wasn’t sure they would even fit.50 Is Not Old | What To Wear While Losing WeightAnd I ended my outfit with my Nina shoes from the island weekend collection that I last wore here. I’m sorry there are no links to my outfit. I have been getting ready to help with a yard sale in the morning for the woman’s club. I have been gathering up items all over the house to take to sell. And I have to be up, ready, and down there by 7:00 in the morning. So I am off to bed.

I hope this post has helped some of you get a better idea of how to dress your “new” body. Make sure your new items “fit” and don’t buy too big. If an item sits closer to your body, it will look better on you.

How tall are you? You look great in caprices and crop styles. I feel like capris cut me off

    1. I am 5’6″ tall and I have fairly long legs.

I just went on a pinning binge. I’ve said it before, I love 99.3% of the outfits you post! I learn so much from your use of color and always come away with new ideas. Keep it up!

  3. Happy Saturday Tania! I haven’t posted in awhile but I read your blog every single day – I look forward to it each morning! You put outfits together so beautifully that I have to keep reminding myself over and over of the commandment, “Thou shalt not covet, thou shalt not covet, thou shalt not covet…” ha! I’ve gone up and down with weight my entire life, so I can’t have a closet packed full of clothes, but I’m learning from you how to accessorize what I do have to make the outfits appear fresh and new. Tania, reread the statement you made concerning your BFF Bertha. It sounded like you traded your best friend for a purse! hahahahahha I got quite a chuckle out of that!!! I know what you meant, but it’s still funny to think about and I needed a laugh! Have a great weekend!

    1. Today I would have traded her for a purse. She and Sandy both pulled a stunt that got them in the dog house.??

You suggest that we “follow you on Pinterest,…” Is there any way you can change the words to instant links? For instance, the word Pinterest would take us directly to your pinterest page.

    Thank you!

    1. Yes, I’ll fix that for you.?

I have lost weight with WW, about 35 lbs. I have cleared out any old fat clothes and donated to Salvation Army. In transition to my new weight I found that pants with stretch were a godsend along with tunic tips. I agree with you that if you have a few slacks in basic colors add color to your tops. My rule is that every top/shirt has to go with 3 items that I have. It’s amazing what you can do with scarfs. Look at it is like a travel wardrobe. Have fun with mixing and matching. You’re only going to be in the transition clothes for a short time. Read articles on travel wardrobes. Also don’t stop going to the WW meetings, when you reach Lifetime they are free. I still weight in one a week or at least every two weeks. Congrats on your weight loss.

  7. I LOVE thrift stores for this very reason!!! Many thrift stores now have the “name” brands in a separate section. I shop by label most of the time since I know what holds up and what doesn’t. It allows me to wear clothes that I would not pay full price for..it is also much easier to pass on to someone else knowing I paid $5 for a LOFT skirt and not $50. Blessings!

  8. Great tips, Tania! And I do love today’s outfit! Love the handbag! What a beauty! Hope the yard sale goes well!

  9. I lost 54 pounds with Weight Watchers — I found great clothing at thrift and Goodwill. It made it must less painful to give those up….I’m still getting rid of things that I loved, but are just too large now…but I make myself do it each season because I never want to be there again!

    1. Congratulations on the weight loss!!!

  10. Great idea to share the conrents of the capsule wardrobe! I would hear about this but not really understand the concept.
I read your blog and you refer to QVC..is this a website? Thought it was only on tc..sorry I am probably the only one unaware. We don’t have these in my area if it is a store.
Thanks for all the great ideas on your blog.

    1. Yes, you can order online from QVC. Qvc.com

    2. I hope this helps you. These are the basic pieces that you can build on.

  11. I would love to know how those ladies are losing weight, at almost 60 I have the desire and need to get to my right weight, but not the method that works.

    1. HI Anne. My husband and I began a plan to lose weight in February. We started off doing low carb but I could not stick with that full time. I then decided to do a combo of low calorie and low carb. To date I have lost 18 pounds and my husband has lost 20. It has been a slow process but the weight is coming off. We also take a 30 minute walk after dinner every night.

  12. Shopping at Good Will or Thrift stores is also helpful. Lots of bargains and surprisingly good quality clothing. Chico’s, White House/ black market, etc are often for sale there.

  13. Tania,
This post really hit home for me! I have lost 35 lbs since January and it’s been a struggle to keep up with presentable clothes especially for work! I love the pixie pants from Old Navy..they look nice for work and also will not break the bank when you change a size. I wear a lot of dresses, and Chico’s online has a great sale site that has been benificial. One other thing that has been a life saver for pants..is wearing a snug cami…it helps hold my pants up! 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  14. This post is right up my alley! Love your suggestions and would like to offer a few more. I started Weight Watchers August 2014 and it’s been a slow but steady race to drop many sizes, from a 2X to medium. My goal is to reach size small this summer so totally understand not wanting to spend money until being at our best weight.

Looking back, I wish I’d waited a bit longer to replace or make smarter purchases, but it was exciting to get smaller sizes with a new look during the journey. All the big ones have been donated to our church so made them happy! I tried to buy down one size to stay focused and make good use of my money. Items like Spanx can help squeeze us in during this time until we slide in that smaller size. Even my shoe size has changed since I no longer need a wide!

Most intermediary clothes were bought at QVC, since I was familiar with sizing, in their outlet area or lunchtime special section. Other suggestions would be shop Goodwill/Salvation Army, garage sales and outlet stores for temporary. Skinny tees are great layering pieces and can do double duty for exercise – plus fit many sizes! Buy a good fitting bra – amazing what they will do for our shape and confidence.

This is a great time to step out of our comfort zone to try new looks. Your style ideas have me doing that!

Hope some of these ideas benefit others and encourage them to have fun on the journey. Love your outfit today, too!

    1. Here, here Audrey! On the weight loss journey myself & love your suggestion about the bra. Also suggest that the underwear be upgraded to fitting and maybe even colorful! Underwear flapping should not be mistaken for applause (-:

Use belts, take in pants, then give away the clothes.

Buy cute or fun along the way…not a lot, just enough to enjoy the smaller sizes and to look great at a “landmark” weight. When you eat sensibly and exercise reasonably, the wardrobe is a great place for the I-always-wanted wild and crazy desires (can still be thrifty, thanks to great discounts and thrift shops!)

    2. Love these tips, Audrey? Congratulations again on the weight loss!!!

    1. Thanks Nancy. I hope you have a great weekend too. I finally got to link-up with you, I am just a day late. Friday was a killer and I didn’t get to link-up with ANYBODY.?

    1. Aww, thanks Angie. I am thrilled you found my little blog! I hope you keep coming back, and be sure to bring ALL your friends. Lol!?
