Easy But Polished Tops I’ll Wear Instead of T-Shirts

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good T-shirt. I own plenty of them, and some days that’s exactly what I want to wear. But there are also days when I want the same comfort and ease of a tee, just with a little more personality.

And I’m not talking about putting on a dressy blouse that needs ironing, special undergarments, and a prayer that you don’t spill your lunch down the front. Lol. I mean easy tops that work with the same jeans, white pants, and casual shoes you already wear.

Over the years, I’ve learned that it doesn’t take much to make a simple outfit feel more polished. A pretty neckline, interesting sleeve, embroidery, texture, or a slightly nicer fabric can do most of the work for you.

That’s what I looked for when putting together these tops to wear instead of T-shirts. Some are pieces I’ve worn myself, while others caught my eye because they have the same easy-to-style qualities I look for when I’m shopping.

Soft Knits That Are Just as Easy as a T-Shirt

One of my favorite tricks is swapping a regular cotton tee for a lightweight knit. You aren’t changing the outfit formula at all, but the texture makes jeans or pants look a little more polished.

Quince Lightweight Cotton Cashmere Dolman Sleeve Sweater

This Quince Lightweight Cotton Cashmere Dolman Sleeve Sweater is the type of piece I like for the awkward time of year when it’s not exactly summer anymore, but it certainly isn’t sweater weather either.

The cotton-cashmere blend gives you a softer, slightly more elevated look than a regular tee, and I like the relaxed dolman sleeve. It’s an easy shape to pair with straight-leg jeans, ankle pants, or white denim.

This is also the kind of sweater that can stand on its own. You don’t need a scarf, statement necklace, or a dozen accessories to make the outfit work.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Tee

I’ve worn this 100% Mongolian Cashmere Tee so many times, and I love the idea of cashmere in a T-shirt silhouette.

It sounds dressier than it actually feels. You still get the simple shape and versatility of a tee, but the cashmere gives it a nicer finish. I’ve worn mine on its own, but this style also works well under a blazer, cardigan, or jacket once temperatures start dropping.

I’m wearing a large, which is worth noting if you’re comparing my sizing to yours.

Blouses That Don’t Feel Too Dressy

I’m much more likely to wear a blouse if it doesn’t make me feel like I’m heading to an office meeting. I want something I can put on with jeans and still feel like myself.

Quince Washable Stretch Silk Split Neck Blouse

I’ve worn the Quince Washable Silk Split Neck Blouse with jeans as well as skirts. This is a great example of a blouse you can dress up or down depending on what you pair it with.

The split neckline keeps it from feeling stuffy, and the gathering around the shoulders adds a pretty detail without adding much bulk.

I’m wearing a medium, and I added the long Freshwater Pearl Necklace. Pearls with silk sounds fairly dressy, but paired with jeans, the whole outfit still feels very wearable. That’s usually the balance I’m looking for.

Simply Vera Vera Wang Shirred Blouse

The texture is what caught my attention on this Simply Vera Vera Wang Shirred Blouse.

Shirring gives a solid-color top some interest without requiring a print, and that’s particularly helpful if most of your closet is made up of neutrals. I’d wear a top like this with jeans, ankle pants, or a denim skirt.

It gives you more visual interest than a plain tee while still being easy enough for an everyday outfit.

Look for Details That Make a Simple Top More Interesting

You don’t necessarily need a dramatically different silhouette to get away from the basic T-shirt look. Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.

Embroidery, eyelet, a split neckline, or an interesting sleeve can make a top feel special while still letting you wear your usual jeans and shoes.

Talbots Soft Satin Charmeuse Split-Neck Top

If you’d like something a little nicer for dinner, church, or an occasion when a cotton tee feels too casual, this Talbots Soft Satin Charmeuse Split-Neck Top is the type of piece I’d look for.

The satin finish gives it a dressier appearance, while the split neckline keeps the style relaxed.

I especially like tops like this because you can change their personality with the bottom half of your outfit. Wear one with jeans and flats during the day, then add trousers or a skirt and dressier shoes when you want to take it up a notch.

Ann Taylor Embroidered Mixed Media Top

The embroidery on this Ann Taylor Embroidered Mixed Media Top is what makes it stand out.

A top like this is especially useful if you tend to wear simple bottoms. You can add jeans, white pants, or trousers and let the embroidery be the focal point instead of worrying about adding a lot of accessories.

I also like mixed-media tops because combining fabrics can give a simple silhouette more dimension without making it overly dressy.

Talbots Embroidered Graphic Medallion Top

This Talbots Embroidered Graphic Medallion Top has the kind of detail that makes styling easy.

The embroidery adds color and interest, so I wouldn’t add much else to the outfit. White denim would keep it bright during warmer weather, and regular blue jeans would make it an easy transition piece as we head toward fall.

If you’re someone who likes prints but sometimes finds them too busy, embroidery can be a nice middle ground.

Lands’ End Eyelet Split-Neck Shirt

I love the look of this Lands’ End Eyelet Split-Neck Shirt.

Eyelet is one of those details that comes back year after year, and I think that’s because it adds femininity without looking overly fussy. The split neckline also keeps this one casual enough to wear with everyday bottoms.

This would be a great alternative to a plain white or solid-colored summer tee when you want essentially the same outfit, just with a little more texture.

Relaxed Shirts for Women Who Don’t Want Anything Fussy

A button-down or popover doesn’t have to feel stiff. In fact, some of my favorite casual outfits start with a relaxed shirt and jeans.

The secret is choosing fabrics and shapes that move rather than shirts that feel overly structured.

Gap Cotton Gauze Denim Collarless Shirt

The Gap Cotton Gauze Denim Collarless Shirt has the relaxed look I tend to gravitate toward.

Cotton gauze is lightweight, and the collarless neckline makes this feel softer than a traditional button-down shirt.

I also like the styling options. Wear it buttoned with jeans, leave it untucked with slim pants, or open it over a tank as a lightweight third layer. I always appreciate one piece of clothing that can earn its keep several different ways.

Nine West Balloon Sleeve Top

If most of your closet is made up of simple tops, changing the sleeve can completely change the look.

This Nine West Balloon Sleeve Popover Top uses a fuller sleeve to add interest while keeping the rest of the top fairly simple.

Balloon sleeves can sometimes add more volume than you want, so I generally like them best when the body of the top isn’t oversized too. It’s all about balance. Pair this style with straightforward jeans or pants and let the sleeves do the talking.

What I Look for in a Top I’ll Actually Wear

At this stage of my life, I’ve bought enough clothes to know that something being pretty isn’t enough. If it’s uncomfortable, requires constant adjusting, or only works with one specific outfit, it’s probably not going to get much wear.

When I’m choosing an alternative to a T-shirt, I usually look for:

  • A comfortable neckline that doesn’t require constant adjusting.
  • Fabric that feels good against my skin.
  • Enough room through the middle to sit and move comfortably.
  • Sleeves or details that add interest without overwhelming me.
  • A length that works with several different styles of pants.
  • Something I can picture wearing with clothes I already own.

That last one has saved me from more bad purchases than I’d like to admit. If I can’t immediately think of at least a couple of things in my closet that will work with a top, I probably don’t need it.

You Don’t Have to Give Up Your T-Shirts

I still love a good T-shirt, and I’m certainly not getting rid of mine. Some days a tee, jeans, and comfortable shoes are exactly what I want. But it’s nice to have a handful of equally easy tops that give you another option.

Instead of completely changing how you dress, try changing just one part of your usual outfit formula. Keep your favorite jeans, keep your comfortable shoes, and swap the T-shirt for a soft knit, an embroidered top, a washable silk blouse, or an easy popover.

That’s often all it takes.
