The Ultimate Guide To Styling Stripes For Women Over 50
In today’s ultimate guide to styling stripes for women over 50 post, I’ll show you multiple ways to wear stripes. You might have heard that if you wear stripes, especially horizontal ones, you will look bigger. Well, I have heard that, and because of that, I always stayed clear of stripes. However, I have since read that maybe that thinking was incorrect. That is a good thing since stripes are classic, and always in style.
Ultimate Guide To Styling Stripes For Women Over 50
There are different types of stripes; horizontal, vertical, thin, and thick. You will want to stay away from vertical stripes on your top half. They tend to show even the tiniest bit of tummy. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want any extra bulges in that area. Pinstripes look very classic and business-like while thick stripes look dramatic and flashy. Navy and white, black and brown, or black and white, are classic combinations that always look great together.
Ways For Styling Stripes For Women Over 50 With A Dress
Wearing stripes is nothing to fear. There are so many ways to wear stripes, and today I’m showing you just a few simple looks. Take a few minutes to check out all these outfits, and then go to your closet and experiment. Add a belt, a pop of color, and different shoes and accessories to come up with more looks. This simple tank swing dress is versatile, comfortable, and perfect for keeping you cool this summer. I bet you will be surprised at how often you find yourself reaching for it as you get dressed in the mornings.
This tank swing dress is a great length and hits me at my knees. The dress is available in many different colors and prints, so I’m sure you will find one that strikes your fancy.
Add Color With A Button Up Shirt
Adding a button up shirt is one of the easiest ways for styling stripes for women over 50. You can leave the shirt open and tied at the waist like in this photo, button it up, or wear it as a jacket. The pop of color gives the outfit a lot of visual interest and adds a playful vibe to the look.
You can choose to leave the tail of the shirt long or wear it tucked underneath like I am here. If I was wearing a pair of leggings, I would probably let the shirt tail hang out to cover my rear.
I added more golden yellow to the look with a Tory Burch tote and espadrille sandals. Yellow is a color I never thought I would wear as footwear, but I love the unexpected look. These espadrilles will go great with navy, green, pink, and with all your jeans. Take my word for it; you’ll wear them way more than you think.
Add Blazers For A Dressy Look When Styling Stripes For Women Over 50
The tank swing dress is casual, but you can easily dress it up by adding a few extra items. I love the versatility of the dress and how easily it can go from casual to dressy.
I wear blazers a lot since they dress up even the most casual outfits. They add a sense of chicness (is that a word) and style, and make any outfit look put together. I love a blazer that is longer in length, and it can be hard to find with everything being cropped nowadays. The blazer is available in lots of colors, and I liked it so much that I bought the bright pink version also!
Gracious, I’ve carried this quilted crossbody sooooo much this year! I love the style and the size of this bag, and it looks great with dresses as well as jeans. I have this bag in Sands also, and I just bought Hot Pink. At a price of $22, this is a great way to add a pop of color to any outfit.
Styling Stripes For Women Over 50 With A Romper
Even though dresses are great for summer, a lot of ladies shy away from them. You can get the same look with a romper, and you’ll stay just as cool. Plus, a romper is also a one-and-done item, so all you have to do is add accessories and go out the door.
Bathroom issues aside, what’s not to like about a romper? This casual romper is great for everyday wear around the house, or heading out the door to do a few errands.
The deep scoop neckline is flattering since it helps to elongate your neck. It is also a smart design element since it allows you to shimmy in and out of the romper with ease. The romper has a drawstring waist that allows you to cinch it to the correct size, and it has pockets!!! Woot, woot!!! I love pockets. Lol!
Add A Denim Jacket For A Casual Look When Styling Stripes For Women Over 50
How does adding a simple denim jacket to a romper make such a difference? The look is still casual, but now it looks put together and thought out. The addition of the denim jacket tells everyone you meet that you created an outfit instead of just grabbing the first thing you saw in your closet.
This is my favorite denim jacket, and I have a LOT of them. I love the lightweight material which is great for when the weather starts to warm up. It might be a little too hot if you live in Florida or Texas, but it is fine for me living in the mountains of Virginia. The jacket has enough stretch that you don’t feel confined, and you’re able to move about easily.
I’ve had these Puma sneakers for over a year, and they still look great. They are leather so they clean up easily. I keep a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser handy for all my sneakers; it works wonders for me.
Adding A Cardigan When Styling Stripes For Women Over 50 Works Wonders
I like to add lightweight cardigans when I style stripes. When you’re concerned that stripes make you look wider than you are, then use this trick to fool the eye. Because the romper is one item, it creates a column. The cardigan extends over the edge of your body and makes the “column” area look smaller than it is. Pushing your sleeves up also helps to make you look taller and thinner since your limbs look longer.
It is the little things that make a big difference in how an outfit looks. These oversize sunglasses are great for keeping the sun out of your eyes on a sunny day. But, my, my, my, look how CHIC I look in these glasses that are only $31!
This straw tote bag is great for a trip to the pool, but it also doubles as a handbag for a casual summer look. Pairing black and brown together is one of my favorite color combinations, so I’ve called this bag into action several times.
These raffia slide sandals are a great neutral that goes with almost everything. They have a gold opening on the strap that adds a touch of style to them.
What do you think? Can you see yourself getting out of your comfort zone and styling stripes???

Super cute stripe outfits today! I would not look twice at the dress/romper on AZ-you look great in the outfits and the AZ model is just “meh” to me!
I love the yellow button up shirt would so wear that look
I enjoy your posts so much more when you model the clothing, instead of looking at pictures. I can then see how the items will fit me. Look forward to your blog every day!!!!
I understand that, Carole. However, I like to show more clothing than I can possible buy, photo, edit, and post about. Plus, something might not look good on me because of my body build, but it might look nice on someone else.
I love all your styling tips. It is so helpful, since I am not creative in thinking of these things on my own. I like the idea of stripes, but not sure if I am ready to take the leap for myself. It seems they always look better on everyone else.
Lol! I resisted for a long time too, Janet. But, after figuring out how to wear them, I find myself buying more and more styles.
Believe it or not, I don’t own a denim jacket. Your blog convinces me of their versatility for my wardrobe; however, since I am XL and short, every style I try on makes me look boxy. Any suggestions?
Jane, try this one. I don’t like looking boxy either, but I love this one. It is very lightweight and stretchy, so that might be the difference.
Thanks for the post! I’m just not a fan of stripes anymore. I had worn them for years and I think I have just gotten burned out on them. I think you look great in everything you put on. Have a blessed day
I used to shy away from stripes, but now that I’ve learned how to wear them, it has opened up a lot of possibilities.
Thank you for all of the styling tips for stripes!!! Love the blouse from BR. Will be ordering it!!!
