The Most Flattering Skirts and Skorts for Petites
Petite gurls? Today’s post is for you! Petite is defined as 5’4″ and under and according to the CDC, the average height for women is 5’4″! Another 40% are 5’3″ and under. So according to my math skills, that’s a lot of people. lol Well, today is all about the most-flattering skirts and skorts for Petites, so leave a comment and let me know if you are average, above average, or below!
Denim skirts are officially back! I’m seeing them everywhere, and I couldn’t be happier. One of the best skirt lengths for petite women is above the knee, and the A-Line works especially well because the slight flare makes the legs look more slender. If you’re petite, you can’t go wrong with Talbots.
How classy is this! I love the polka dot pattern and the tie belt. It’s lined which is always nice when wearing white and the high waist helps elongate the silhouette for petites. I’d pair this with an off the shoulder black top, and I’d be ready to hit the town.
What a GORGEOUS print. This is another great skirt from Talbots. The tie belt is removable, and the waist is elastic. The colors are listed as Caribbean Sea, azalea, rose shadow, honeydew, fresh papaya, freshwater blue, ultra pink, black, and white. It’s just beautiful and would go with so many things.
Another retailer that always seems to do petites well is Loft. This little swing skirt is actually 18 1/2″ long. It’s high-waisted too, making petite legs look even longer. I’d pair this with a cute plain T-shirt, a denim jacket, and some cute tennis shoes.
This skirt is 1/2 inch longer than the one above at 19 inches. I love the feminine ruffle hem and the pretty tie. The Loft is a great brand, and the price is really good. Believe it or not, it’s under $30 dollars!
Vertical stripes are a petite gurls best friend! I love the flirty skirt, the ruffle, and the elastic waist. It’s also lined which is always a plus. I like the way they’ve styled it with a navy blue shirt. Good job, Loft!
The Most Flattering Skirts and Skorts for Petites
Talbot’s Everyday Stretch Skort
I’m a big fan of skorts. Okay, I’m a big fan of all things fashion, lol. But I really like how functional skorts are and how far they’ve come. Remember when they first hit the fashion scene? They were skirts in the front and shorts in the back. Maybe they should change the name to S and S – Skirts with Shorts. Whatever the name, this is pretty!
Petite Mid-Size Skort from Dillard’s
This is the shortest of the three skorts at 16 inches. It comes in a variety of colors. The only thing I don’t like is that it doesn’t have POCKETS! Oh well, the good news is it’s under $27 dollars. At that price, you can buy a cute bag to carry.
This basic khaki skort could be worn to multiple places – the ballpark, running errands, shopping, etc. However, I would not suggest styling it like this or standing like this for that matter. lol. I like khaki and white, but I’d tie a cute linen top at the waist, or do a fitted white shirt that didn’t need to be tucked in. I did an entire post on white shirts and just about any of them would work.
That’s it! Don’t forget to take my informal poll and comment whether you’re of average height at 5’4″, above, or below. Inquiring minds want to know.

I am a very petite ( ie under 5 ‘ ) over 50 lady who loves fashion, wants to look stylish and modern, without looking like I’m trying too hard to look young. Also, my legs are ok and slim, but unfortunately my knees look a little wrinkly now.
Are tights an option, even in summer time or on holiday?
We all have body parts we aren’t happy with, but I promise you…most people don’t even notice. However, if you feel more comfortable wearing tights, then do it.
I’m 5’3″ … husband calls me Shorty…
I ordered the Boston Proper denim skort which you featured a few weeks ago. I also grabbed one of their “travel” skorts on sale. Thanks for introducing me to Boston Proper. 🙂
I’m so glad you liked their clothing.
I am 60 years old and 5’4″. I am pear shaped and heavy and definitely petite proportions (arms, legs, short-waisted). Love Talbots and Loft. The pants that definitely fit the best are Talbots curvy fit petite (generally in the slightly-stretch denim, which comes in multiple colors).
Hi, Tania – Thank you for the great post. I like all of your suggestions. I’m 5’2″, and it’s been hard for me to find flattering skirts since I went through menopause three years ago. I love wearing skirts because I still have nice toned legs that are long for my height, and skirts are more comfortable than pants during hot Texas summers. But I now have a belly – I had a flat tummy before menopause and no amount of dieting and exercise seems to get rid of my obvious tummy. Pencil skirts at the knee or slightly above the knee used to look great on me, but now I have to be careful and maybe go up one or two sizes so my belly doesn’t show. I don’t want to look like pregnant at age 56. I’ve tried a-line and trouser skirts, and they’re a little better at hiding my belly. The longer, fuller skirts seem like they would hide it too, but when I’m tried them on in the past, the amount of fabric overwhelms me because I have not gained weight in my hips or in my rear – it’s all in the belly. Do you have any other tips for me?
Nancy, I get it. Menopause is a monster that is hard to cope with. I carry most of my weight in my belly also, so I understand your dilemma. I know a lot of companies have the tummy control panels in them, and you might try a SPANX or something similar control garment. I will say that the one thing that helped shrink the belly is removing bread from my diet. I love bread and carbs in general, so removing them is hard for me. But, when I’m strict about not eating them, the tummy shrinks.
Hi Carla.
I am in the same boat. I am 5′ 1″ but not petite in frame either.
I am also a senior citizen and so hard to find the right clothes and style. I don’t like the cropped look or sleeveless tops. Pants are always too long and being on a very fixed income, it is too expensive for me to have things tailored.
So, I feel lucky if I find the right clothes that fit right and look nice.
Look forward to your posts every day! Thanks for the many helpful ideas and suggestions ! Keep them coming. I am a fan.
Thank you so much for your posts for petites! I am 5’1”rectangular body shape, no waist & carry weight more in stomach. I struggle with skirts as I look ridiculous with tucked in shirts. Wonder if the wrap around skirts from the 70’s will ever come back. I am glad to hear denim skirts are back!
I USED to be 5’ 4”, but lately I clock in more like 5’ 2 1/2”, due to aging, so I’m below average. Recently I’ve noticed that A line skirts seem to have too much fabric for my size. I’ve been gravitating toward pencil skirts and sheath dresses.
Hi Tania
I am 5’4. accord to the loft that’s petite. I also love skorts my 2 favorites are a black and white print from T by talbots and navy soild zenergy By Chicos. Both are comfortable with slim short legs, so I dont have to keep adjusting them. lol
5’0 and pear-shaped, but not petite in terms of my frame. Just short😕
Shopping is not enjoyable. I wish there was a place that catered to short women who aren’t petite.
Enjoy your posts! 😊
I am currently about 5’3” having shrunk with age!😟 I was always right on the edge of petite sizing. I actually like it that midi-length dresses and skirts are longer on me as I’m not fond of the mid-calf look – cuts my legs off! Lol
Great post! I am 5 foot nothing** so I am finding that children’s plus size sometimes can be a good fit on length lol JC Penney’s has a big girl section that actually has some cute options. Have a blessed weekend😎
I’m 5’2” and 63 years old. I love dresses! The one and done concept, and they are cool and comfortable! We’ve had very high temperatures here on the Gulf Coast ‼️
Thank you for helping us petite ladies. I am 5’ 2” on a good day! 😊 I have “regular” length legs and a very short torso. So petite tops and correct proportions are my challenge. Thank you for sharing inspiration for all sizes!!
I’m a little under 5’4”. I’ve found that pencil skirts at to just below my knees look best on me. Interesting that the average woman is 5’4” but average misses clothing is often too long.
The denim skirt is see so cute. I wore that style back in the day. I love short skirts. I just won’t wear them anymore. I have two many veins and my knee are getting saggy no matter how much step aerobics I do. I would probably wear them in a more casual setting like at the beach.
Hi Tania! Thank you for this post for us petite gurls! I’m just below average at 5’3”. Lots of nice choices, especially in skorts. I prefer skorts. Thanks for showing some midi’s as well. I know that length is trending but for someone at my height it must be sized for petite or it just doesn’t fit or look right.
Thanks for remembering us petite gurls! I’m 5’2.5″ with a high waist but short legs, so finding flattering dresses and skirts is a big challenge. Thanks again, and have a blessed day!
Im 5’6″ and have to be careful to not wear things too short (for my age), but love all the skirts and skorts especially!
I’m 5’6
Me too, Donna Ray!
I’m 5′ 2 1/2″. Definitely going to have to check out some of these skirts/skorts!
I just bought a khaki skort and I wear it everywhere. I can dress it up or down, very practical. I am definetly a petite. I used to be 5’4” and now just 5’ 2 1/2” . Thank you so much for doing a petites post.
I’m petite and love A line skirts!
I’m a petite. I like A-line skirts. I’m not a fan of the flair skirts because they add volume and weight. I prefer not to tuck in my shirts. Thanks for the post ! I love Talbots and Loft!! I love your blog too!
I am 5’4”. 🙂
5’10” here-no petites for me! 🙂
Hi Tania,
Loved this post. I am definitely a fan of skorts. On a good day I am 5’3”. My mom used to say her grandchildren were growing up and she was growing down. I am at that stage in my life now.
Thanks again for this post.
I’m definitely a Petite at 5’0″ tall
