What Is an Influencer, Really?

According to Merriam-Webster, an influencer is someone who inspires or guides the actions of others. Today, the word is often used to describe people on social media who promote brands or lifestyles, but the truth is, everyone is an influencer in one way or another. Your words, your actions, and how you live your life affect the people around you, whether you realize it or not.

We Are All Being Influenced

Growing up, I wanted Farrah Fawcett’s hair and bought every Teen Beat magazine I could. These were my early influencers—celebrities who shaped my style and ideas. But it wasn’t always for the better. As adults, the sources of influence can range from our family to our friends, coworkers, and even strangers on the internet.

Here are just a few ways we get influenced every day:

Eating habits – Have you ever been to a restaurant, and after your friend ordered, you said, “I’ll just have what they are having?” I know that I have.

Drinking or smoking – How many of you have drinks socially with your friends? Once again, my hand is raised. Most people don’t start these habits alone. They usually pick them up by watching others.

Language – You might have noticed that you let out a swear word or two when you are around someone who swears. UGH! I think I’ll keep my hand up since all of these things pertain to me. Our speech reflects our environment.

Politics and religion – These beliefs are often shaped by those closest to us and the conversations we allow into our lives. My grandmother used to pick up several of my cousins and take them to church every time the doors were open. Do you think that she might have influenced them?

Jesus: The Greatest Influencer of All Time

I recently read a commentary that called Jesus the greatest influencer of all time, and it stopped me in my tracks. He didn’t need a platform or followers in the traditional sense. He didn’t hold political office or have worldly power. But His life and legacy have influenced billions across centuries.

He wasn’t the first to spread God’s message—Moses, David, John the Baptist, Peter, Paul, and Mary all played huge roles. Even Pope Francis once called Mary “the first influencer” for her willingness to say yes to God, according to this article.

But Jesus is the ultimate influencer. His message of love, forgiveness, humility, and sacrifice changed the world and still transforms lives today.

What Did Jesus Call Us To Do?

Jesus didn’t just influence others—He called us to do the same.

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

His instructions weren’t for a select few—they were for all of us. You don’t have to have a huge following to influence others for Christ. You just need to be faithful, consistent, and willing to share how Jesus has influenced your life.

Let Your Light Be the Influence

Being an influencer for Christ starts in your home and extends outward. It begins with your words, your integrity, your love, and your willingness to reflect Jesus in everyday moments.

Whether you have a platform or not, someone is always watching how you live. Let your life point them toward Jesus.

Thank You for sending Jesus, the greatest influencer the world has ever known. His life, death, and resurrection changed everything for eternity. May my words and actions speak louder than any social post ever could.
