SIX SIMPLE WAYS TO LOOK TALLER
Have you ever wanted something you couldn’t have? Growing up, I felt like I was almost a giant because I had long legs. It seemed like I was always taller than the other kids, and the fact that I was also skinny led to a nickname of String Bean. My sister envied my height, and being taller was something that she always desired.
Simple ways to look taller
Why do we desire to look taller?
Considering yourself “short” is a relative concept. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we constantly compare ourselves to one another, always admiring others and desiring to have certain qualities that we think we lack. Being considered “tall” commands status and attention, which is what we are looking to achieve.
It is natural to want to look taller, especially if height isn’t your most prominent feature. Fashion trends don’t always help either, as sometimes styles do not flatter shorter, more petite figures. Thankfully, there are many tried and true styles that can make you appear an inch or two taller and overall elongate your figure.
From your head to your toes, here are some simple ways to help you appear taller.
Use your head to look taller
faux sherpa moto jacket // faux-fur beanie // black relaxed turtleneck // High Rise Bootcut Jeans // Byzantine Cross Necklace // Shine Script Necklace
One way to make yourself look taller is by drawing attention to your head. Your hair is one feature that you can use to quickly add height to your frame. If you have long hair, consider pulling it back into a stylish updo. This will reveal more of your neck and shoulders. Showing more of your neckline will draw the eye upward and instantly make you look taller.
If the situation calls for it, don’t be afraid to throw on a hat. A hat draws attention upward towards your face and above. This will cause people to look at you directly, giving you the stature you want.
Tops and Jackets
Ivory Faux-Leather Jacket – Size L – Runs TTS // Metallic Cable-Knit Cowlneck Sweater (has silver threads running through it) – I’m wearing a medium – fits TTS // Wool Blend A-Line Pencil Skirt – I’m wearing a size 8 (I always size down one size in Talbots) // Black Opaque Tights – Size 2 // Black Suede Cap Toe Boots – Size 9 – runs TTS // Similar, Similar,
Much of the focus on appearing taller is on pants and shoes, but choosing the right tops can also add height to your figure. Shirts and tees with a V-neck line make your chest and upper body appear longer and give the appearance of added height to your frame.
Jackets and coats are important, too. Choose shorter and more form-fitting jackets, ending at or just above your hip bone. Minimizing your upper body with a shortened coat or jacket focuses attention on the length of your legs, giving you the long, lean look you want.
When it comes to tops, choose those that are more form-fitting. Loose clothing loses our figure and does not flatter or accentuate an elongated frame. Extra fabric and length create additional bulk and volume to your figure and do little to make you appear taller.
Dresses and Skirts
Long Sleeve, elastic waistband, ribbed turtleneck dress in medium // Reversible Plaid/Houndstooth Ruana // Belt is an old one and no longer available // Gold Vermeil Cross Necklace // Large Statement Earrings // Abbie Bangle Bracelet in M/L // Mother of Pearl Pendant // Black Suede Knee Boots (old) // Rebecca Minkoff Black Leather Handbag (old)
Depending on the time of year, dresses and skirts also work to our benefit in making us appear taller. In fact, choosing the right dress or skirt is one of the best ways for a woman to look taller. Dresses that are form-fitting or cinch at the waistline give a more proportioned appearance, which is flattering to your figure.
Whether you opt for a dress or a skirt, both can work to help you appear taller if you pick the right length. A midi-length skirt or dress that falls just below the knees will instantly work to elongate your figure. This length hides your knees but shows off your lower calf and ankles, creating a taller figure. Short dresses and miniskirts are just above the knee and are also an excellent option for looking taller, as they draw focus to your legs, making them appear longer.
Pants
Midnight Shade Flare Jeans (I’m wearing a large) // windowpane cowl neck sweater (Medium) // large chunky necklace // chunky heel boots
When it comes to looking taller, our legs can do much of the work for us. Opt for full-length pants instead of cropped styles to add more length to your legs. High-waisted pants also give the appearance of your legs being longer. This works by raising the height of your pant line to further up on your waist, giving your legs a longer appearance.
Looking for a pair of jeans? To make yourself look taller, consider jeans that are flared or are wider at the bottom. Flared jeans by design are form-fitting around your waist and upper thighs and looser around the calf and ankle. These make them a perfect option for those of a shorter stature looking to achieve a taller, casual style.
Shoes
Here, high heels are the obvious choice. High heels are an easy way to give us physical height to our figure. An added benefit is that high heels add a curve to your foot which adds even more length.
Whether you are looking for heels, boots, or flats, choose a pair that has a pointy toe. A pointed toe adds just a bit of length to your legs but can go a long way in elongating your figure and giving you the heightened look you want.
Boots are a fun way to dress up any style in colder months while also working to our heightened benefit. There are flattering styles to choose from in our quest to length our frame when it comes to boots. A classic style is a great pair of tall black riding boots, as black is a slimming color and the perfect length for showcasing your elongated legs.
When choosing the right pair of boots for a taller look, look for those that are calf-length or over the knee. These styles work well in drawing attention to our legs, which is key to looking taller as it gives your bottom half a longer appearance.
Using Colors and Patterns to our Advantage
In addition to specific apparel, there are fun, simple ways to use the color of your clothing as a mechanism to appear taller. Wearing colors that are complementary shades and hues is great for shorter women as the colors blend in together, minimizing the breakage in clothing apparel. When your color choices are in the same or similar color schemes, it minimizes the distinction between your torso and legs, giving a uniform, taller look.
The same is true for wearing monochrome dresses or with simple patterns. This gives you a uniform color scheme, giving attention to your taller frame.
Another way to stretch the appearance of your figure is to match the color of your shoes to the color of your pants. This creates a more unison line from your torso to your toes, flaunting a longer appearance.
Patterns can also work to our benefit in making us appear taller. Vertical stripes draw the eyes up and down, whereas horizontal lines bring attention to your width. This is why it’s okay to skip the belt, as it will draw attention to your mid-figure rather than to your longer frame.
When I want to be taller, I always grab a pair of heels. But you don’t always have to rely solely on your shoe selection. Whether you want to accentuate your height or add an inch or two to your natural figure, these simple styling guides will help pull focus to the vertical, giving you a uniform, taller look.
I hope this post was helpful for those who have always wanted to appear taller. But remember, those who are tall still have challenges; they are just different from the ones that Petite ladies face.

One of my favorite posts! Thank you for the great tips. You look amazing and wear the clothes beautifully. I’m wondering about the beige sweater you have on in the section about boots. Do you have a link or know wear you purchased that ? Also the gold sweater dress, it’s stunning on you. Thank you
A sad fact is as we get older some of us will lose height. I was 5’4” but in my seventies I have shrunk to 5’2 and a half. So, I think you Tania for these reminders. I never thought of my head but makes perfect sense, I’m getting me a sombrero. LOL
Love all the clothes highlighted in this post. At 5’7″ never had issue looking taller, I am tall. It is annoying tho as short people think it ok to constantly comment on their petiteness and cuteness. Something a tall girl is never told. Also tired of reaching for the top shelf to help the littles out. My big gripe and whine is over. haha Until the next time –
I know weight should not be a focus, but I want to tell you – you look amazing! You have inspired me!
Thank you for the tips on appearing taller. Wondering, if appearing taller is the goal, should a petite not wear leggings & longer tops?
Thanks!
You look gorgeous. And at 5′ 10″, I am mostly interested in your jeans, lol. Every height has its’ gifts and challenges, and it is interesting to learn about what my shorter loved ones deal with. Thanks for the Spanx flares link – so pretty to me in your photo. I am looking for the right new jeans for me and you have been so helpfful! I can’t wait to see the jeans you wear in 2022. Seriously, I will be getting some of them , too. I also like the jeans in the other photos in this post, too – the light blue ones and the grey straight legs below. Your photos are great. I like all the angles. I hope you are feeling better. THANKYOU!
Great tips! I am happy with my 5’6” frame, but I still picked up some great ideas.
You are looking really healthy & fit, is there an eating and fitness routine that you stick too? If so, knowing your not a trained professional in these areas, could you still share what you do on a daily basis?
My mid-life mid-section doesn’t seem to want to leave!!
I have always adored petite short small frames!
I think most of would love to be just slimmer, I am 5’6 which is probably average, somewhat in the middle. My focus is to drop the 25 pounds I’ve packed on, I can’t really blame it on COVID, just my own poor food choices and an addiction to sweets!
Today’s post was full of good tips for looking taller. I like to get ideas for outfits from your posts also. You always look neat and stylish. I agree that shoes or boots with a little height make a big difference in looking taller and more streamlined.
Excellent points but being 5’10” looking taller has never been a thing for me
Thanks for today’s post. The best and most economical tip for appearing taller is …..to PRACTICE GOOD POSTURE. Shoulders back, tummy in, neck tall and chin tucked. Without it, even the most expensive clothing/outfit will not live up to its potential.
