Gurls, today I’m sharing Rectangle Shape: Adding Curves with the Right Clothing. This is a subject I know well. Sigh. I’m a lot of things but curvy I am not, lol. The good news? I’ve learned how to create curves with the right clothes and I’m spilling the tea! Think waist-cinching styles, flared skirts, and anything that adds a little shape where you want it. Whether you want to embrace your naturally athletic frame or add a little va-va-voom, I’ve got the best styling tips just for you! Let’s dive in!

Unsure of your shape? Check out my previous post here.

What Is a Rectangle Shape?

A rectangle shape, also called a straight or athletic shape, means your shoulders, waist, and hips are fairly similar in width, with little natural waist definition. This body shape often has a sleek, balanced look without pronounced curves.

I am a rectangle! My shoulders, waist, and hips are almost the same width, with now many curves. I call it a ruler, but the effect is the same. Stick straight with no curves in sight.

To get the illusion of curves, I have to trick the eye. Adding a blazer to the striped shirt gives me the illusion of a waistline. Your eye sees the middle column, and the edge of the blazer gives the appearance that my waist is thinner than it is.

Key Characteristics of a Rectangle Shape:

Shoulders, waist, and hips are nearly the same width – No dramatic differences in measurements.
Minimal waist definition – The waist doesn’t curve in much.
Evenly proportioned – The upper and lower body are balanced.
Straight silhouette – A naturally lean, athletic, or slender build.

Best Tops For a Rectangle Shape:

  • Peplum tops – Add volume at the waist to create curves.
  • Wrap tops – Define the waistline for an hourglass illusion.
  • V-neck or scoop neck tops – Elongate your upper body and draw attention upward.
  • Structured blazers – Shoulder pads or tailored fits create definition.
  • Ruffled or puff sleeve tops – Add volume to balance out a straight frame.

This peplum top is an absolute dream for a rectangle body type! The peplum flare adds visual interest and gives you that defined waist that we love. Plus, the pleats add structure without feeling stiff. A split neckline is perfect for enhancing the bust, and the fitted bodice makes sure everything stays sleek. This top is an easy way to add shape to your wardrobe while keeping it comfy. And Gurls, did I mention it’s a no-iron fabric? That’s what I call a win!

A great neckline can make all the difference for a rectangle body shape, and this split-neck blouse is the perfect example! The split neck draws attention upward, while the flowy fabric softens a straight silhouette. The sleeves have just enough volume to create a little drama, and the pintuck detail gives a hint of shaping at the waist. This is one of those wardrobe staples that flatters every figure and works with jeans, skirts, or trousers.

Best Dresses For a Rectangle Shape::

  • Fit-and-flare dresses – Add curves with a cinched waist and fuller skirt.
  • Belted dresses – Help create a more defined waistline.
  • Ruched or gathered dresses – Add volume in key areas for a more shapely look.
  • Asymmetrical or wrap dresses – Create movement and draw the eye diagonally for a softer, curvier effect.

Nothing defines a waist better than a belted dress, and this one is a total game-changer! The structured fabric gives shape while still being breathable, and the collar adds a classic touch. The belt cinches the waist to create the illusion of curves, and the slight A-line skirt balances out a straight frame. If you love a tailored, polished look, this dress is a must-have!

This flared midi dress is an easy way to add movement and shape to a rectangle body type. The collared neckline brings focus to the shoulder line, while the fitted waist helps define curves. Plus, the flowy fabric and flared skirt give just the right amount of visual interest. I love how this dress flatters a straight shape without feeling too structured—effortless and chic!

Best Bottoms For a Rectangle Shape::

  • High-waisted pants/jeans – Define the waist and create a more shapely silhouette.
  • Wide-leg or flared pants – Add movement and balance to the lower body.
  • A-line skirts – Flatter your figure by adding volume at the hips.
  • Paper bag waist pants – Create the illusion of a cinched waist.

A good pair of wide-leg trousers is a rectangle body shape’s best friend! These pinstripe pants are super flattering because they lengthen the legs and create a more balanced silhouette. The high waist brings definition to the midsection, and the structured fabric keeps them looking sharp. These are perfect for work, dinner, or just looking polished without trying too hard. Seriously? How gorgeous are these!

A midi skirt with an A-line shape is an easy way to add some curve to a rectangle body type. The soft, flowy fabric gives movement, and the defined waistband helps create shape. This one is extra special because it has just enough structure to hold its shape while still being comfortable. Available in Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite

Best Outerwear For a Rectangle Shape:

  • Trench coats with a belt – Creates waist definition.
  • Cropped jackets – Break up a boxy shape and add proportion.
  • Longline blazers – Elongate your frame while defining the waist.

A belted jacket is a “yes, please” when it comes to creating a defined waist. This quilted shirt jacket is lightweight but warm, making it the perfect layering piece. The belt cinches the waist, while the slightly structured shoulder line balances the look. Plus, the deep pockets add a little extra visual interest. Throw this on over a fitted top and trousers, and you’ll look effortlessly put together. Also available in black!

A classic trench coat is a must-have for any rectangle body shape, and this one checks all the boxes! The double-breasted design adds some structure to the bust, while the belted waist helps create curves. The collar frames the face beautifully, and the fabric has just the right amount of weight to drape perfectly. This is one of those pieces that instantly makes any outfit look chic!

Best Accessories For a Rectangle Shape:

  • Belts at the waist – Instantly create a curvier look.
  • Statement necklaces or scarves – Draw attention to the upper body.
  • Structured handbags – Balance your proportions with well-defined accessories.

Gurls, never underestimate the power of a good belt! This western-style belt is an easy way to create a defined waist and add a little flair to your outfits. The textured embellishments and buckle detail add some extra personality, while the width is just right for cinching in a dress, blazer, or tunic. If you want to bring more shape to your look, a statement belt like this is the way to go!

I just found out that I am a rectangle shape based on your earlier post and I was pleasantly pleased to see that my existing wardrobe has all of these styles that you highlighted to enhance the rectangular shape. I have always been drawn to belted dresses and jackets, A-line skirts and trench coats, so it appears I’ve been on the right track all along 🤣 which is great news for me. Needless to say I loved your post and found it to be extremely helpful. Thanks so much for compiling this information.

  16. Thank you that was helpful. Unfortunately I’m a short waisted rectangle , and would like advice on how to dress a short waisted rectangle ! Could you do one for us short waisted people. Thanks

  17. Tania, I love that you and I are the both rulers so I can actually see what your choices will look like for me! The split neck or v neck has long been my friend. Belts can’t be too wide-high waist here-but you are right they give a definition that is otherwise not there. Thank you!
