Packable Sun Hats That Won’t Lose Their Shape in Your Suitcase

But, if you are like me, I am about to save you a lot of headache (and heart-ache!) when it comes to your favorite summer hats. While this post is all about “packable” options, I have to be honest, I rarely buy those! Instead, I buy the high-quality, structured hats I love, and I’ve mastered the art of getting them to my destination in perfect condition.

If my packing description sounds as clear as mud, let me break it down for you. It’s all about the “Hat Nest” method:

1. Fill the Crown: I take my socks, underwear, or even camisoles and stuff them inside the “head” part of the hat until it’s firm. This keeps the top from collapsing.
2. Brim Down: Place the stuffed hat in your suitcase with the brim flat against the bottom (or on top of a flat layer of clothes).
3. The Moat: Take your heavier clothing, like jeans or sweaters, and roll them up. Place these rolls around the hat to create a protective wall that keeps the brim from bending or snapping.

This raffia hat from Tommy Bahama is my go-to when I want that “Island Girl” elegance. The wide brim gives me amazing coverage, but the raffia material still feels light and breathable. Because it’s a natural fiber, it needs that extra support when packing, but it’s so worth it for how chic it looks with a sheath dress like this one.

If you want to invest in a “forever” hat, Eric Javits is the gold standard. This Camp Jav style is just iconic. It has a slightly more structured, “fedora-style” crown that looks so sophisticated with a maxi skirt and a sweater vest. It’s a sturdy hat, but I still use my “sock stuffing” trick to make sure that beautiful crown stays crisp while I’m on the road or in the air!

Women’s Cloche Hat – UPF 50+ Sun Protection – Marina in Black

This cloche hat is perfect if you like something a little more classic and close to the head. It gives you that polished, Audrey Hepburn feel while still being super practical for travel. The UPF 50+ protection is a big bonus, especially if you’re out walking or sightseeing. I love how this one keeps its shape but still packs down easily in your bag. It runs small, fyi.
