I Wasn’t Born With Brassy Hair, And I Don’t Want It Now

It seems like eons ago, but back in 2020, I started using Hair Biology hair products, and I’ve never looked back.

I wasn’t born with brassy hair; it was snow-white and gorgeous. But age takes its toll, and now I have to fight the brass monster to keep it from taking over my blonde hair. As we age, things start to change, and that includes our hair. We are not “one size fits all,” and our hair needs are different from someone in their 30s.

Thankfully, Hair Biology launched the Silver & Glowing line, which I consistently use. I don’t use a lot of fancy and expensive products; I use great products that were made especially for women over 40. Women over 40 have been overlooked for way too long by fashion brands, so I was thrilled to see a company that valued us older women and developed products just for us.

Just like skin, hair shows signs of aging:

  • Thinning: as we age, we don’t just grow less hair, the diameter of each strand also thins.
  • Dryness: Our scalp’s natural oil production can drop in half as we age, which makes our hair feel thirsty and dry from roots to ends.
  • Graying: By our 50s, more than 90% of women have at least some gray hair, and one-third of us want to show our grays off, not cover them up.
  • Hair Quality: hair flows like silk when each strand has a uniform shape, but as we age, time and damage can cause irregular hair shapes, giving us more frizz and flyaways.

Joe uses Hair Biology too. He uses the Soft & Hydrated Line, and I’m glad since it keeps his hands off of my shampoo. Lol! My hair is coarse, thick, and on the dry side, so I don’t wash my hair every day. I use the Silver & Glowing silver shampoo and conditioner most days, but once a week, I’ll use the Color Sealing Mask.

I also apply the Silver Shine Serum each time I wash my hair. This shine serum can be used on wet or dry hair, and it gives my hair back the shine it had when I was younger.

Dry your hair. I’m channeling Albert Einstein; I bet his white hair would have loved Hair Biology too! Lol!

This photo is right after I dried my hair, and it hasn’t been styled, and I didn’t use any other products.

I always travel with my full-size bottles in my suitcase. I’ve made the mistake once of not having Hair Biology with me, and my hair felt like straw the whole week. Recently, while I was visiting my parents, I ran to Walmart and picked up a Silver & Glowing Shampoo and Conditioner to leave at their house so I wouldn’t have to bring mine every time. I was thrilled to know that you can now find Hair Biology online and in-store at Walmart.

I’m not the only one who is thrilled with Hair Biology; here is a tiny sample of comments left mby y readers.

“Hair Biology is great! I started using their volume line and it has worked really well for me. My hair has been thinning for years. HB makes it feel soft but not so soft that it is limp and it gives really good lift. There has been enough of a difference that my hair stylist asked what I was using and got me to send her screenshots of the bottles. And the HB products work better and are more affordable than what I had been getting from the dermatologist!”

“Thank you Tania for your inspiration and great ideas…especially the Hair Biology!”

“I purchased other hair biology products on your recommendations and this new one is great. I feel like it makes my highlights look freshly done. I use about once per week, alternating with the other (thinning hair) products. Thanks for the endorsement and recommendation.”

‘I have been using the Hair Biology line since you first posted about it. I am 65, a color treated brunette, and my hair had been getting brassy between coloring jobs. Then the whole COVID thing, and my hair was a hot mess. I mix the soft and hydrate product half and half with the purple line about twice a week, then use the regular soft and hydrate the other times. The brassiness has disappeared, and I have less gray hair showing too. Less visits to the salon, and even my hairdresser is impressed with the changes. Great product, thanks for the follow up!”

Will be watching for your posts

  2. Do you use hairspray and if so what brand? I like Hair biology hairspray – found some on eBay, but kind of spendy. Wondered why I can’t find it at Target or Walmart. Is it discontinued?

    1. Ronna, they have discontinued it. I use Big Sexy instead.

  3. I’ll have to try that! I use a brand from the salon that is purple every other wash. I used to wash my hair every day, but as I got older it’s usually two to three times a week.

I’ve used these products for a few year since I saw one of your previous posts. I love these products. My hair is colored and HB keeps my hair soft and shiny. Thank you for the recommendation.

  10. I’m going to try this!

  11. Your hair is gorgeous. I will have to look into this for color treated brunette hair 🙂

I read your original recommendation for Hair Biology for my limp and thin hair. I used it per directions on the bottles, but didn’t see improvement and it just left my hair feeling heavy. I did use it faithfully for about three months. So now I’m trying AOB for volume.

  13. The first time you mentioned HB I went right out and purchased it at Target. I am so glad to see that Walmart now carries it too. A wonderful product for sure! I wish they made travel sizes because I really hate packing the large bottles but my hair appreciates it!

    1. Penny Jo, I bought some travel shampoo bottles and now refill them with HB.

  14. I just started using Hair Biology as well and am very pleased with the results. I live in Canada and I found it at a drugstore about 6 months ago but its not everywhere here yet. I did end up buying it from Amazon though. I have thin fine hair and of course its even worse with the bit of grey and menopause affecting it. This has made my hair softer and more body. I like that the shampoo is very thick so you dont have to use a ton of it.

  15. So I am a brunette and color my hair (golden medium brown). Will these products work for me? Or just blondies?? 🙂 Thanks for all the tips, Tania. LOVE reading your blog every day! And I am on the slow journey of getting my weight down. You are an inspiration!! 🙂

  16. Tania, thank you for sharing with us what works for you. I found these products at Target a couple of years ago and I LOVE what they do for my greying hair! Now I tell people I’m not getting grey, I’m getting SILVER! 🙂

  17. I’ve had oily hair forever. Covid did a NUMBER on my hair 2 years ago. I don’t think it ever recovered. I’ve been trying to find THE products for my “new” hair. Will definitely be trying this, especially since Wal-Mart carries it. That will be a simple purchase!

I am a brunette with blonde highlights; will this turn my hair purple?

  19. LeeAnn Barnard says:

Definitely going to pick this up! My hair is still good but I want to keep it that way!

  20. I’m going to try the volume line its certainly cheaper than what Im using. Thank You.

  21. Thank you for the post. My hair is thick and coarse and colored. I do need a change, so I am going to check on the HB.

  22. Vickey Vaughan says:

Can’t wait to try Hair Biology. Your recommendation and the other comments from user has convinced me to give it a try.

  23. Marcie W. says:

I have used Hair Biology products and love the condition of my hair after using them. This is a good reminder that I need to go back to using them. Glad to know they are now available at Walmart.

    Happy Valentine’s Day.

    Yes, I like Hair Biology!

  25. Ginger Hiller says:

I love the picture of you when you were a little girl! So adorable. I use Hair Biology shampoo once a week, then Garnier Fructis the other days. Now I’m thinking that I should make the switch and use only Hair Biology. Thanks!

  26. Thanks! I am going to buy some!

  27. Dana Smithmier says:

i have the same problem-i will try this!!

  28. Happily Valentine’s Day! Brassy blond is a no-go for me, too. Haven’t seen this product so will check it out.

  29. Can you shampoo with this product everyday? Some purple shampoo will turn your hair purple if used everyday.

  30. Is this product only for gray hair? I see someone with color treated brunette hair uses this. That’s me color treated brunette, so what line would I use? This is new to me. Thank you for your help on this.

  31. I wonder if this will work to cover the brassy spot on my hair. Last summer, I was spraying a wasp nest on my house and wasn’t thinking of the wind. It blew the spray back at me. Where it landed on my face (luckily I had my glasses on so it didn’t get in my eyes) and sides of my bangs. I didn’t think to go wash my hair, just wiped it down with a wet paper towel. I had hoped it would have grown out by now, but it still hasn’t. It also made my hair very brittle in those areas and my long bangs kept breaking off so that now they are much shorter.

    1. Janine, that is scary. I wouldn’t have even thought about something like that happening.

      1. We get wasps bad here certain times of the year and I have to keep them under control or the nests get big. That day, the spray coming back at me freaked me out more than the wasps themselves. But lesson learned, check the direction of the wind before spraying. LOL!

  32. Gail Harrison says:

Thank you Tania! I need this too! I have always been blonde, no gray and I’m 75! But my hair is dull looking! This is just what I need!
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Joe!

    1. Gail, I love this product so much. I used to complain that my hair was dull, but not any longer.
