Won’t you take me to Funky Town? Why is it that my photos always seem to remind me of songs? As soon as I saw this pose of me wearing this year’s wide-leg jeans trend, I started singing Funky Town. Lol! That is a far cry from the Rolling Stones music that I was singing on Saturday. Music and fashion might not go hand in hand, but certain styles go along with the music. The disco era had some wild clothing, Madonna had her pointy bra, the 80s had those oversized blazers, Grunge was just grungy, and now you have Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.

Quick change of topics…do you remember Jeff Foxworthy and his comic bit about how to tell if you are a redneck? I had to laugh at a couple of those jokes because they hit too close to home. “If you’ve ever cut your grass and found a car,” and “if people keep coming to your house thinking that you’re having a yard sale” are two that had me rolling. Well, this weekend, Joe and I came up with our own game.

Even though my blog’s name is 50 is not old; we were laughing at how “old” we were acting. I craved an ice cream cone, so we went to the DQ and grabbed 2 chocolate-dipped ice cream cones. We drove back to the house, and when he parked his truck, neither of us moved. We sat there in his truck, enjoying our ice cream. He was oohing and ahhing about how good it was and said, “this is sad that this is the highlight of our day.” Lol!!! So, you might be officially old if sitting in your truck eating an ice cream cone is the highlight of your day! Hahahahaha

It really doesn’t matter what genre of music you like, just enjoy yourself and have a good time. If you follow me on Instagram, then you might have seen my dancing 🤦‍♀️ on my feed. I am NOT a dancer; that would be my sister, who never lets me forget that SHE is a good dancer. Lol! If you are not on Instagram and are intimidated by the app, here is a tutorial that will make you feel more comfortable. Make sure that I am the first person that you follow!!!

WHAT TO WEAR WITH WIDE LEG JEANS

The rule of thumb is wide on the bottom, tight on the top. Basically, that means that when you have a flowy skirt, wide-leg jeans, or palazzo pants, you should wear a top that is fitted instead of flowy. A bodysuit is a perfect top, but I haven’t been that brave just yet, so I’ll stick to form-fitting tops instead.

This open stitch puff sleeve sweater is a beautiful shade of blue and the perfect kind of top to wear with wide-leg jeans. The sweater’s unique details make this a standout and one that will get you lots of compliments. I feel like the sweater runs small, and I will send this one back because it is too small for me. I am wearing a medium, but if I eat a grape, you will see it. So, a large would have been the better size for me. Use my experience so that you don’t make the same mistake.

Here is a better look at the open stitching, and it is really a pretty detail! The multi-strand blue necklace that I am wearing is an old one from Chico’s. I love Chico’s jewelry because it is always of great quality, and they have amazing statement jewelry. I’ll link to some similar necklaces that would look great with the sweater.

My quartz earrings are no longer online since they were a one-time purchase. But, my gold vermeil chain and cross are available. However, my Beckett link bracelet and Rebecca white howlite bracelet are available.

As I said, the top fits me to a tee, but I would rather have a little breathing room, so I think that I need to size up 1 size. Even when I size up in this top, it will still be form-fitting and great for wearing with my wide-leg jeans.

These jeans will fall into two categories. I LOVE them, or I HATE them. I guess there isn’t going to be a lot of middle ground with these wide-leg jeans. I’ve tried several different brands trying to find a pair of wide-leg jeans that I like, and these are the ones! This pair is by NYDJ, and I love this brand because they know how to fit a woman’s body. NYDJ stands for Not Your Daughters Jeans, so these are made with us in mind instead of 20-year-olds.

I love the fit of these jeans and how they hug me in the hips and thighs and then are wider in the legs. Joe has not been a fan of the other jeans I’ve tried, but he gave these a thumbs up. That was shocking since I didn’t think that he would ever like stovepipe-looking jeans. I did have to size down in these jeans, so I am wearing a size 8, and I love the way they look and fit. The small amount of fraying at the hem is just icing on the cake!!!

I was going to the store, so I knew that I would be doing a fair amount of walking. My Tory Burch ballet flats were called into action; however, I would wear a pair of platform shoes at first. There are times when we dress for style, and then there are times when we dress for comfort. Comfort won out this time. Lol! I’ll link to a few other ballet flats for you, including a pair that I just got from Walmart that is very nice. The widget shows the shoes from Walmart as being sold out, but don’t pay it any attention. Always click if you like something because those widgets get it wrong all of the time.

If I am wearing my Tory Burch ballet flats, I also need to carry my Tory Burch tote. I do love this tote, way more than I thought that I would. I love the contrast of the canvas against the beautiful leather, and it has turned out to be a great size for me. It is large enough to hold a 7″ tablet, but if you want a larger tote, you can grab that here. The large version is only $30.00 more, but it is a lot bigger. I wanted a smaller version since all of my handbags are so huge already.

You might have noticed the watermark on some of my photos. I’ve had so many people steal my photos and create spam accounts that I thought I would experiment with a logo on my photos. Most people said that they didn’t even notice the watermark, and one reader suggested putting the watermark over the lantern instead of on the right side.

It is great to see style and buying tips for us older ladies who still want to dress stylishly without looking like we want to look like 20 somethings.

I am in my fifties and found you on Pinterest and you have helped me tremendously when it comes to fashion. My 3 grown children kindly told me “Mom, you have really jumped off the Fashion Train!” So, I began to look and your blog on Pinterest is just what I needed to spark my imagination. I also wanted to say Thank you for all the scripture you post. I am a Jesus Girl through and through and I can tell by the countenance of your face that you are too! Blessings to all 50ish women who believe that we can Love Jesus and be fashionable too.

  3. Barbara W. says:

Love the outfit on you!! Glad that you added the watermark on your photos. Hopefully, this will work for you.

  4. Could just be my age, but I LOVE a bootcut! But I still want them to fit well in the waist, hip and thighs. Will have to check these out in person as a 22.5″ leg opening sounds like a bit much. Thanks for all the photos!

  5. Cheryl Wingate says:

Your jeans (and entire outfit) look great on you, but I don’t think I’d choose this style of jean for myself. I do love my NYDJ jeans though, so maybe I’ll eventually try a pair. 🙂

  6. That top’s sleeves are just perfect!

  7. Love the wide leg jeans on you!

  8. You wear this well Tania! Now I want to try this look myself😊

  9. Maggie Brockman says:

Appreciate the practical advice about pairing wide bottoms with a fitted top. Rules like this make selecting an outfit much easier.

I love this outfit. You look great!

  11. Maribeth conklin says:

I love the look of those jeans! I don’t usually spend that kind of money on jeans though. But maybe just maybe.

  12. The sweater looks better on you than the model!😊
She has it tucked in, looks sloppy actually. You look so fit and trim in the pic with your mid section showing the sweater fit!
Not a fan still of wide legs, just can’t get on that train, lol😊

    1. PS- We love DQ dates also! 💕

  13. Love your blog and fashion style, but must admit that they are getting a little pricey for me. I take the look and shop around for like items. Thanks for the ideas.

  14. I have always been a fan of wide leg jeans. I think they are very comfortable.

  15. Love the color of the top! it’s one of my favorites.

  17. Those NYDJ are the first wide leg pair I have seen that i like! I always order down a size in NYDJ. Thanks for finding them for me 🙂

    Love your Tory Burch bag!

  18. Love this outfit on you! Not sure I could rock the wide legged jeans since I’m short and have a tummy, but you sure can! 🙂

  19. dianeh820 says:

Oooh! Love the top and the jean! I’ve got to get brave and start wearing my wide leg jeans,…

  20. kellie johnson says:

I’m not sure I like the wide leg jean trend. The sweater is great

  21. Tania, your post just gave me flashbacks to my early years in high school! Love, love how you pull off those “bell bottoms”. I think I’m too short for that style now, but you make it look so elegant and youthful! Jeff Foxworthy was always quoted by my dad! Memories are floating back. I think I’ll try to find some modified wide legged, mid rise jeans! Love your dancing videos, you always make me smile and laugh!

  22. CYNTHIA L says:

Love this outfit! Really like the blue sweater.

  23. Linda White says:

I love love this outfit on you. I haven’t tried any wide leg jeans on that I like but I’m going to have to try these on. Love your style, right up my alley. Woukd love yo ho shopping with you. Keep up the good work!!!

  24. I love this look. I am short so smaller bell bottoms look better on me. Trying to find my groove and keep my cool grandma status! LOL! Thanks for inspiration!

  25. p.s. I love your ice cream cone story! I think you’re just enjoying the simple things in life and that is SO important!!! <3 <3

  26. I think you look awesome! My problem with wide leg jeans/pants is finding them long enough. I am tall and have super long legs. We’ll see how this trend goes. Seems women have really embraced skinny jeans. I LOVED the look around 2010 with the capris and cute short jackets. We’ll see how this goes…I’m actually in my 60s and am fighting muffin top. Hard to wear fitted tops.

  27. Elizabeth says:

I am not sure about the wide leg jeans. Look good on you. wish that necklace was still available. Love it! The blue is a great color on you!

  28. Phyllis pack says:

I like the elbow length sleeves.

  29. KAREE B GANDER says:

My husband and I joke that lately our dates have been trips to the doctor!!

  30. LISA CASTRO says:

I’m still on the fence about the wide leg but they look great on you.

  31. cynthiahattersley says:

Your post made me smile today! I grew up in the Midwest so Jeff Foxworthy’s words always give me a chuckle!

  32. Your sweater is very pretty and such a gorgeous shade of blue, and the wide legged jeans look great on you, Tania. They remind me a lot of my high school days but I’m not sure if I’d wear that style again.

  33. Cathy Murphy says:

Tania, I’m new to your blog and was immediately attracted by your refreshingly open and bubbly energy! You’ve also inspired me to reevaluate what’s in my closet and add some fresh, key pieces. Thanks for being so fabulously you!

  34. Super cute outfit on you. Love the blue sweater, not sure I could pull off such a fitted one. Sitting in an truck, eating an ice cream cone sounds wonderful!!

  35. I have always liked wide leg jeans that fit like these. They look super cute on you! Thanks for the rule of thumb regarding wide on bottom, too. I had forgotten that.

  36. I am a 60ish girl. Loved my wide legged jeans and cropped tops.

  37. Kim albright says:

I cannot get into these jeans. I know they say side parts and skinny jeans are out but I love the skinny jeans. I think because in the 80’s we all wore bell bottoms now I’m fighting it! 🤣

  38. I like the jeans. Not sure I would wear them but they suit you.
Oh, the join of an ice cream cone.

  39. Cheryl Sampson says:

Love the blue and keep on dancing. Not ready to go back to wide legs just yet.

  40. I am too short to look good in the wide legged jeans, although I did wear them in the 70s. Anyone else remember “elephant” bell bottoms, lol? Your comment about being able to see it if you ate a grape cracked me up, Tania!

  41. I love this style, but need to find something in my budget. Not sure how long this will last

    1. Love the outfit… making the casual elegant! I had to look for the watermark… perhaps the upper left corner?

  42. Love the sweater color and style. I am also a fan of wider leg jeans and really like the ones you are wearing. Chico’s jewelry is always a hit with me. McDonald’s dip cones are cheaper than DQ but their ice cream machines always seem to be broken. 🙁

    1. I love that sweater! You pull off those jeans, I don’t think I could lol. Anita

  43. Karen Daniel says:

It’s amazing how you can turn frayed hemmed wide jeans into an elegant look, but you sure can do it! When I was in my 20’s, my boss (head of a CPA firm) and I were on the road, and we stopped for a chocolate dipped ice cream cone and ate it in the car! Your post brought back this fun memory.

    1. It is funny how the smallest things can trigger a memory.

  44. Oh I wish those jeans and a little higher rise as they are super cute and I that blue sweater is adorable with them. We just went to get ice cream last night and finished while sitting in the garage. A lot of times we will park in a parking lot and people watch or watch the traffic while we eat our ice cream.

    1. Hahaha! That is a new way of people-watching!

      1. Sheila Miller says:

We went to DQ on Saturday night and ate in the car. I might try a mini bell but too short for this.

  45. You look great as always. Hubs and often take a trip to DQ in one of his vintage cars. It’s a highlight for us too.

    1. We were a little shocked that the total for 2 medium chocolate-dipped cones was over $6.00!

  46. Melvin Pavlicek says:

You look very nice in this outfit. I love the sweater! The jeans look modern and appropriate for us girls over 50. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I liked them a lot! I was surprised, but I did.

  47. Donna Trout says:

    Super cute!! 🥰
