HOW TO WEAR PLAID WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE A MAN
The first thing that I think of when I think of a plaid shirt is a lumberjack wearing a flannel shirt. Are any of you picturing the Brawny man on a roll of paper towels? Yeah, me too, and that is not the look that I am wanting. So, on today’s blog, I’ll show you a feminine take on a plaid button-up shirt without showing you my muscles.
The material and the pattern does make a difference. You CAN still wear flannel, but it looks more feminine if the pattern is in purples, teals, pinks, etc. You can also make plaid look more feminine by making sure that you buy a fitted shirt. A shirt that hangs and bags, verses fitting your curves, will look more manly. If you own loose or baggy shirts, then tie them in a knot at your waist to look more feminine. Think Ellie Mae Clampett. Lol!
To give my look a more feminine vibe, I also chose to add my favorite blazer of the moment, this drape collar blazer in burgundy. This blazer is figure-flattering, and it helps to give me a waistline. Plus, the burgundy color of the blazer draws out the burgundy stripe in the plaid shirt. I am wearing a medium in this blazer, which fits me perfectly. I have linked to this blazer several times, and I noticed that the sizes are getting limited.
You might notice that this plaid shirt matches the plaid pants that I wore in this post. I love this plaid shirt because it looks festive, but not Christmasy. So, you could wear this shirt all year long, instead of having to put it away after Christmas. A lightweight shirt like this can be worn in the summer by rolling up the sleeves. I have noticed that the stores are very picked over since they had such large Black Friday sales that lasted almost the whole month of November. So, like the blazer, this shirt is very limited in size. I am wearing a large in this shirt, and I think that it fits me great.
I am wearing one of my favorite pair of earrings today, the AVI. This weekend only, Kendra Scott is having a 20% off sale on earrings. (some exclusions apply) These earrings are almost $20.00 off, and that is a great deal. All of the earrings below are on sale, and I have all of these and love each of them.
Pairing the plaid shirt with dress pants instead of with jeans gives the shirt a more feminine look. I am wearing more jeans these days, but I still want some dress pants in my closet. These black skinny bi-stretch ankle pants are polished looking, but they are very comfortable also. I am wearing my usual size 10 in these pants, and I think they run true to size. These pants are also available in navy and red, and both of those would be a good addition to your wardrobe.
I love how these pointy-toe heels look from the back. The shiny back and heel give these shoes a unique detail that sets them apart from other block heels. This is my first pair of chunky block heel dress shoes, and I actually like them. These faux suede shoes are on sale for 60% off, and that brings the price down to under $40.00!!! I am wearing my usual size 9 in these shoes, and they fit me perfectly.
My DIL was taking my photos the other day, and we decided to experiment with different poses. This was supposed to be me looking relaxed and sophisticated, but instead, I look like I have a headache. Lol! I watched one photographer that said you should create triangles in your photo for interest. See the triangles that each of my arms creates? Are you interested? Hahahaha!!!
Anyway, I hope that you have enjoyed today’s post and that you will tell all of your friends about my blog. For those of you who messaged me or left comments, I do feel much better. I had a sinus headache that was probably weather-related since it started raining soon after my headache set in.
In December, I am going to be giving away something each Monday on my blog. So, to enter, leave a comment about the Christmas gift you’ve received that was the biggest surprise. For me, it was probably the year when Joe bought me TWO pair of Hunter Boots. Lol! I didn’t expect him to do that.

My daughter got me a bracelet that was my Dad’s signature! One of the best surprises I ever received!
My biggest surprise was when my boyfriend gave me a puppy! He didn’t last, but she was my buddy for 11 years. I still miss her.
Meanwhile, don’t give pets as presents! That’s how the pound fills up!
Beautiful outfit! My biggest surprise was a diamond ring and he proposed.
The best gift I got was from my son Zach. He had a necklace made with the Latitude and Longitude of where my Mother’s ashes were sprinkled on a lake in Vermont. Could not stop from crying when I opened it and he told me what it was.
The xmas before we married, my soon to be hubs knew that I admired the Lenox Butler’s Pantry china so he took me to the department store and told me to pick out what I wanted! Have loved it every single day. ❤️🎄 👰♀️ 🤵♂️
Hmmm, my surprise gift would have to be when I was 15 my parents gave me this Quarter Horse I had been wanting. Money wasn’t plentiful back then so a surprise he was indeed!
My favorite unexpected Christmas gift was a hand-made doll named Susie. I was 5.5 years old. It was the first Christmas after my dad died and money for gifts was sparse. My mother sewed, stuffed and embroidered a face on Susie. I will never forget the joy that doll brought me on Christmas Day. It was years later that I learned of the many hours my mom spent creating my Susie doll.
My hubby surprised me with a gorgeous diamond tennis bracelet one year! I wear it almost every day! By the way, I like your hair curly!
My best present was when both my daughters and their families surprised me by coming to my church’s Christmas Eve candlelight program! Best present ever.
My husband knows that music boxes are special to me. One year he found an old one at a garage sale. It has 2 penguins dancing. So sweet — both the thought and the actual music box!
My favorite Christmas gift ever was a doll that my aunt gave me. It was hers as a child and I had always admired it. Soon after she passed away. I was very thankful.
Our income is a lot different than the majority of the comments here LOL My surprise gift was from my darling husband who shopped and shopped until he found a coach bag he could afford for me. I loved that purse and wore it for years and years. I still carry the change purse today with any bag I carry.
I love the creative pose with your arm above your head…you do NOT look like you have a headache! The most special gift I ever received was a microwave oven from my dad!! This was back when microwaves were about $500 and took up the entire kitchen practically!!!
. It was the first time he had ever bought me a gift and I will always remember it even though he is no longer with us….
My best friend made me a beautiful blue and white ceramic Christmas tree. Over 40 years later i still have the tree, we are still best friends.
Last year my kids found me the mama bear slippers that were sold out. They refer to me as a mama bear. I was so surprised! Love the outfit.
My dad gave me a beautiful blanket that my mother had purchased before she died a few weeks before Christmas. It was unexpected and SO special! I was grieving the loss of my mother, and I was able to wrap up in that blanket and feel her love still with me!
My husband bought me a sapphire and diamond ring for Christmas right before our 5th anniversary and I was extremely surprised!! 😀
When I was first married and didn’t have a lot of money, my husband gave me a forest green leather jacket. I felt like a million dollars when I wore it.
One year I asked for a kitten. All the presents were wrapped and under the tree, so I thought well guess that was a no. But my creative husband cut holes in a box and the kitten had been put in earlier that morning. Best surprise!
Loved this post as I tend to shy away from plaid for the reasons you said. Love the pants – unfortunately already sold out in red in my size.
One of the best gifts I got was a Coach bag from my sweetie. My cousins had mentioned on the phone that they had gotten bags from the outlet and then Mike showed up with a classic Coach bag – remember how wonderful the leather smelled.
Biggest surprise was when my husband and dad arranged for us to visit at Christmas without telling my mom and I. I was told last minute (to pack of course) and didn’t tell my mother until she opened the door and saw us. Sweet memories. Glad you’re feeling better.
Lol. Keep working those triangles. My best Christmas present was way back in 1989 when we adopted our son. A Christmas baby blessing.
I think my biggest surprise gift wasn’t from my husband, but a Dr I worked with for many years. He gave me a framed calendar and had the artist, Charles Wysocki personalize and sign the glass. The thought that he took time to stand in line to purchase it and have it signed was special then and now. Both the Dr and artist have died, so it is truly priceless now.
I’m always looking for a nice pair of pants so I grabbed these today thank you!
I’d say my best gift was from my son he bought me a beautiful necklace and it was in an engraved jewelry case. Nothing super fancy but I treasure it!!
My biggest surprise gift was a small box that I opened last which was a babies bib with a snowman on it saying “just chillin” and my daughter wrote “till summer 2015”. That is how we found out that our first granddaughter was expected ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The biggest surprise Christmas present my husband ever got me was a synthesizer keyboard. I grew up playing the piano but all through college and early marriage I did not have access to a keyboard. We were broke newlyweds and for Christmas he sent me on a scavenger hunt the resulted in my finding the keyboard. Sweetest and best gift ever. In later years I taught my kids to play.
My biggest Christmas surprise I ever received came from my grandmother. It was gold silverware. She passed away that year right after Christmas. It’s still my favorite.
Tania, you crack me up. I laughed through this whole post. You come up with the most creative titles too! Love this outfit.
One year my Grandparents were with us for Christmas. They stayed in my room. On Christmas morning I had a HUGE beautifully wrapped present with my name on it! I thought it was a whole bunch of new clothes (I was maybe 10). Turns out it was a rug (!) for the side of my bed. My Grandmother’s feet got cold when she got out of bed in the mornings!
It took me a while to find my gratefulness foe that one!
My best Christmas gift was my daughter, Holly, being born at 3:40am. Merry Christmas!
This shirt is darling! My biggest surprise was last Christmas – we had said let’s just keep it small since my husband and I did not need anything and he gave me a designer cuff bracelet I wanted.
My husband gave me two really special jewelry gifts for Christmas. One year it was diamond stud earrings, and another was a multi-colored sapphire bracelet! He’s a keeper! I have this jacket in burgundy and navy. Love them! I’m going to try this look with plaid! Thanks for the inspiration!
My biggest Christmas surprise was finding out I was pregnant with my first baby while visiting my in laws in Miami – LOL. So much for keeping it a secret.
Best,
My MIL had her engagement ring reset in a ring for me. It was such a special gift. Especially since her husband had passed away.
The best Christmas was a surprise getaway to the Smokey Mtns for Christmas. Both my sons were in service and would not be home. I was feeling pretty blue until my friend took me away. Got my mind off what I was missing and lifted my spirits. Still think about it every Christmas.
I still love that blazer….. never ordered mine. 🙁
One of the sweetest Christmas gift’s was a calendar of my family in pictures, loved it ❤️
I had finished opening gift when it was time to do our stockings, as is our tradition. Goofy gifts are usually the norm. The very lady gift was my very 1st pair of diamond earrings!
My husband bought me a Tori B. purse 🙌🏼
It wasn’t the most loved gift, but it was the the biggest surprise. It was a Bow-drabra. I never said I wanted one and have never used it. Sometimes my hubby has strange taste in gift giving. Ha!
We got married in November, and that year, my husband bought me diamond earrings that matched my wedding band. I was floored. How did he know? LOVE the tartan blouse-you look great!
My sweet dad surprised us with a big Christmas the year I turned 18 (a long time ago!) I got a sting of pearls and small diamond stud earrings. I was shocked and delighted.
My mom refashioned my grandmothers’ diamonds into a new ring. Still wear 40 years later.
Tania….your hair looks gorgeous!!! My sweet husband surprised me with a new one carat wedding band. He is a fabulous gift giver, not just expensive gifts but thoughtful ones that mean something. Have a great weekend.
~🎄Lisa~
Best Christmas gift ever was a new car with a HUGE red bow on top!
My husband bought me sports car! He put the keys in a jewelry box to fool me. I was gobsmacked
