How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker Over 50: Expert Tips
I have always had thick hair, so I was hoping I’d miss out on the whole hair-thinning era. Sadly, no one is immune. Hormonal changes, menopause, and just plain ol’ life can make our once-thick locks feel a little…meh. Don’t worry, though—we’ve got this! Today, we’re diving into “How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker Over 50: Expert Tips.” I’ve found some great products that’ll help give your hair more volume, bounce, and va-va-voom. Let’s get started, and don’t forget to tell me which ones you love in the comments!
How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker With Dry Shampoo
Do you use dry shampoo? Where was this when I was a teenager? I love it. It’s great for in-between days, but it also adds volume. When you spray dry shampoo near your roots and massage it in, it creates separation between the strands. This lifts the hair off your scalp, yada-yada-yada, you’ve got volume. I even spray it in my hair before bed, and the next day, it’s given me a bit of lift. It’s also color-safe, yay. It’s got a ton of great reviews, which is another plus.
Here’s another version. How does it work? The powders or starches in dry shampoo soak up oils and grease on your scalp so your hair doesn’t look like it’s been stuck to your head all day. One of my issues is that my hair starts to droop as the day goes on. No worries. Pop this in your bag for a mid-day spritz, and you’re golden.
How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker With Volumizing Shampoo
I’ve mentioned Biotin many times. This shampoo is all about strengthening and thickening your hair. It’s packed with biotin—a vitamin that’s like spinach for your hair follicles—and collagen for extra strength. It’s really good for repairing damage. Our poor hair gets colored, combed, teased, heated, and curled, then sprayed with sticky stuff. No wonder it needs so many special products to stay looking healthy!
How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker With Texturizing Spray
One of the good things about getting older is that you can remember when these products first came on the scene. What did hairdressers do in the 80s? Oh yeah, perms! Texture spray puts fine particles on your hair strands, creating a slightly rougher surface. This gives your hair more “hold” and makes it easier to style and lift, especially for creating volume at the roots. This texture spray gives your hair that tousled, “just got back from the beach” vibe, even if the closest beach is hours away, ha!
How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker With Mousse
I’ve mentioned this WOW product a lot. I first saw it on TikTok, then my sister tried it and swears by it. Put it on wet hair at the roots and dry with a round brush. It has good reviews (if you don’t want to take my sister’s word for it), and folks say it also adds shine. I’d pair this with a dry shampoo throughout the day.
This mousse is bringing back the 80s in the best way possible—volume without the crunch! It’s so lightweight but gives your hair that “bigger is better” vibe. It’s perfect if you’re blow-drying and want that extra lift. Check out the fragrance – papaya and tangerine butter. Yum!! The ingredients include Aloe Vera, Rosemary, and Thyme – which means it won’t strip color.
How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker With Rollers
Don’t be afraid to go old school with rollers, Gurls! Put these in when your hair is slightly wet, then heat with your hair dryer. They have a ceramic-coated core that helps them get hot. Let them cool, then remove. It couldn’t be easier. The set includes three different-sized rollers—perfect for all hair lengths, including hair rollers for short hair.
Here’s another option by the same company. To get volume, just clamp the clips as close to the roots of your wet or damp hair. It should dry with the roots lifted. If you want to use them for curling, clamp the ends of the desired hair sections and roll them up. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes until your hair dries, then remove the clips. You can’t beat rollers for volume!
How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker
A scalp scrub might not sound glamorous, but it’s the secret to healthy hair growth. This one removes all the product buildup and gives your follicles a fresh start. I’ve read that scalp massages while using this boost blood flow and promote thicker hair. Just think of it as a mini spa day for your scalp!
I’m all about the back tease! This little tool is a total powerhouse for creating volume. Whether you’re teasing for a night out or just adding a little height to your crown, it’s so easy to use. It’s also great for adding texture if you’re styling an updo. Big hair, don’t care!
There you have it, Gurls—How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker Over 50, all wrapped up with a bow! I am so happy that I found your blog! I have purchased many of the items you have recommended with great success. I loved your “body type” explanations and clothing ideas, very helpful. Keep up the great work!
Yay! I’m glad you are finding the blog to be helpful.
Gurl blog 3 was wonderful. Just what I needed. My Amazon cart is loaded…xoxo
I really hate the fact that my hair is thinning. I love going to the salon because she makes it look so much thicker and it always looks good until I wash my hair then it goes back to looking like crap because I’m not good at doing my hair and plus I don’t always have the money to always go to the salon. Thank You for your suggestions!!!! I can’t wait to try and see if it works for me.
I’ve never had really thick hair, so now that I am in my 60’s it is a real issue. Thanks for these ideas.
I am going to try a couple of these –
I have lost about a third of my hair and it’s so flat. I’m going to have to try some of these suggestions. Thank you for sharing.
I hope some of these suggestions help.
Great post as we maturing ladies do have to deal with this issue. I’ve been looking into hair vitamins and Weem seems to be a great one that is affordable and on Amazon. Have you heard of it or tried it?
I’ve not. Let me know if that one works.
Thank you! I’m experiencing much thinner hair these days! Even had a conversation with my stylist. I take Biotin supplements and have tried a couple of the products you showcased! I’m going to take a closer look at some of the others!
Thanks for this list. I’m going to try the Wow. What is working for me is not coloring my hair anymore. All this silver hair is growing on my temples. It doesn’t look thin anymore there. I’m going cold turkey (no highlights) because I don’t want harsh chemicals on my head anymore. It’s painful but I’m excited at the same time. They’re a lot of gray hair videos and blogs to help women for this process when they’re ready. I also drink perfect amino powder in water every morning. My doctor said she has to get a haircut more often now. I know it has helped me with my stomach issues. I don’t know if I’m allowed to name the company.
I have don’t the same at 78 ( who was I kidding) So let the gray/ white show I feel free from every 4 /6 weeks color
And no special shampoo either

This post could not have come at a better time!! Just this morning, while getting ready, I was struggling to figure out what to do to my hair to get some volume. I’ve always struggled with fine, thin hair, but it really seems to have gotten worse in the last several weeks. I’m definitely going to try some of these products!
I hope they work for you.
I always use volumizing products but am interested in the dry shampoo. Gonna try it!
I ordered two of the products. Fingers crossed.
I hope you like them.
I started really really early & finished early!
