Wearing red lipstick is powerful! You feel like you can conquer the world! I think that red lipstick is a woman’s superpower. But, there is a trick to getting the perfectly applied lipstick. You don’t want it to smear, or leave mouth prints on cups, etc. So, today, I am going to show you my tried and true method for getting the look that I desire. You can start by applying all of your makeup and making sure that you have already brushed your teeth. You can apply a little foundation or primer to your lips when you are getting dressed, and that will help your lipstick to apply better. I start with a red pencil to outline my lips. I want the cupids bow outlined first, and I make a V or an X to start the look. Today, I am using a Covergirl lip liner in the shade passion. I also have a Covergirl lip moisturizer in clear and the Mac Chromagraphic liner in NC15/NW20.
After I get my starting point of the cupid’s bow finished, I continue to line the rest of my lips. You want to stand back and see that they look symmetrical at this point. You can adjust the liner before you start to fill in with the lip color. Now for the lip color. Stay inside the lines of the lip liner and color the entire lip with the lipstick. I like using lip stains because once they are dry, they don’t transfer to cups or anything else that you touch. I have multiple red lip stains that I use, but today I am applying LipSence. I am starting with the color Blu-Red, but I am also going to add the color Plum. Blu-Red looks orange-red on me, and I am wanting a deep red instead. You can see the difference in the shade once I applied the Plum on top of the Blu-Red color. Now for the part that makes your lips look the best. Here is where the Mac chromagraphic pencil comes into play. I outline my lips in the cream pencil making sure to fill in the cupid’s bow area. Then I take a very thin makeup brush that I have set aside for this purpose only. Using that brush, I blend in the cream so that it makes the line disappear. However, it still gives your lips a defined look. Even though my lips looked moist, they were very dry. LipSense requires a topper of a gloss or the moisturizer like I use. You are finished with your lip color, and this should last you the entire day! That is one of the things that I like about lip stains; there is no reason to reapply the lip stain through the day. Here are the colors that I used. But, I also like using Maybelline 24 color, Covergirl lip stain, and Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss. They work just as well in my opinion, and I use the lip moisturizer over them also.
It might take some practice to get the look you want, so go ahead and get started.

This shade looks so good on you. I have the hardest time finding the right red for my skintone and tooth color! I know that sounds weird, but some shades, maybe purple-based, of red make my teeth look more yellow.
Do you have any tips for selecting the perfect shade? Putting swatches on my hand or wrist never seems to be any help, though I feel like that’s what other people do!
Love the lip color looks really good on you, but I have to compliment you on your complexion, you look amaizing, can you share the secret?
Good to see you have recovered really good.

My husband once told me years ago that I looked like Dracula when (I thought) I was rocking a red lip (he doesn’t even remember – men!), but I guess it wasn’t the right color or application for me. I am so ready to try once again because you look absolutely fabulous! Thank you so much for this great tutorial, Tania, it’s just what I needed!
