Over 40 Fashion Blogger, Tania Stephens is showing items to make your guests feels at home

We recently had two families come and stay with us on the same weekend. My son, DIL, and my grandchildren came for a couple of days, and then my Energizer Bunny Friend and her husband and daughter stayed with us the next night. Both families forgot one item and had to ask me if I had one they could use. That got me thinking, and I decided to make an “if you forgot” basket for each of my guest’s rooms.

Over 40 Fashion Blogger, Tania Stephens is showing items to make your guests feels at home 1

I thought about the items you would normally use when you took a shower and got ready to go to bed. Some items were things you wouldn’t care to use after someone else, such as pump lotion or shampoo. Other items would want to be things you could take with you and put in your travel bag.

The Kopari Coconut Body Wash is a product that I just got and started using myself. I love the light scent, and you know how I feel about scents, and it makes my skin feel super soft. I found these Bath and Shower Body Scrubbers to make applying the body wash easier, and I added one to each basket.

I ordered two different shampoos and conditioners; this basket has the Dove Hair Therapy Shampoo & Conditioner set, while the other bedroom has the L’Oreal Repairing Shampoo & Conditioner set.

Because I have such dry skin, I figured others might need a moisturizing lotion also. Lubriderm Advanced Moisturizing Lotion is a great lotion to use when you get out of the shower. It doesn’t have a fragrance, at least not one that I detect, so I like that.

I also added some essential items, such as disposable razors, deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, and some feminine supplies. While I didn’t put any skincare in the basket, I did add some makeup remover wipes and a makeup eraser cloth in the basket.

I don’t have it in yet, but I ordered this water pitcher with tumbler to put on each nightstand. I thought it came with the wooden holder, but in reading the description again, I think it is not included. I thought the holder was a nice touch, especially if the pitcher might have condensation.

One of the coolest items I ordered is a night light for the bathrooms. When you are a guest at someone’s house, you can get disoriented if you get up in the middle of the night. So, I ordered these light-changing salt lamps to go in the bathrooms as a night light.

I already had the clear storage bins, but these Wire Storage Baskets are a great neutral, and they add a charming touch that the clear basket doesn’t have.

I’ve thought of a couple of other things that might be ways to make your guests feel at home, so I’ll link to those too.

vase of flowers

I think it would be a nice touch to add a vase of flowers on the day the guests arrive. I was also thinking about a magazine, but do people actually read those anymore? I see so many people on their phones that I’m not sure that a book or magazine would be something they would want.

If you think of some other items that would make your guest feel at home, please let me know.

  1. Perfect, thoughtful basket for guests. Great post!

  2. I like to leave snacks in case my guests get hungry and don’t feel comfortable in our kitchen. I also leave regular wipes as well as plastic disposable gloves and disinfectant wipes if they feel the need to wipe down any items they may have brought or even the bathroom if they feel it necessary.

  3. Nancy Lawrence says:

I would also have a fan or white noise machine in the guest room. I cannot sleep with total silence, so I usually take my small noise machine with me when I go somewhere.

    1. Hi, Nancy —
I used to always bring a white noise machine, too. Now there’s a phone app you can use for that. One less thing to pack!

  4. Loved todays post. It’s always very thoughtful to have things in case when company comes. I’d add packaged snacks & fruit if the basket is big enough. I do love the idea of the water carafe & cup!

  5. great ideas! extra blankets i did too

  6. I love the ideas for your guests! One thing I did for my guest room is to add a folding luggage rack. Easy storage and easy access.

    1. Oh, and snacks in the basket. Granola bars, chocolate, crackers, etc.

  7. Nancy Priszner says:

I love those ideas and use most of them. However, I add small power bars and mints. I have a night light I purchased at Costco several years ago that automaticilly turns on a flashlight should the power go out. Thank you for sharing!

  8. If any of your guests are women under 50ish, tampons and/or light pads would be a helpful addition.

  9. We love to frequently host guests! We keep an extension cord & distilled water for our CPAP people.
We also put out a nicely framed copy of our WiFi login info so they can use without having to ask.
I LOVED the white T shirts idea & will be adding those!

    1. I love the wi-fi login info, that’s a nice touch.

  10. I really enjoyed your post today. There are several items I will be ordering. The white t shits are a great idea too.

  11. I also keep two clean bathrobes in the closet for guests to use. Bathrobes are just too bulky to pack but nice to have when getting morning coffee. One I bought at a Good Will that is like new.

    1. That’s a good idea. I do have some slippers that are for men and women, so I could add those too for cold toes

  12. Deborah H says:

I often have guests staying over and I have a basket similar to what you have supplied for them.
The only other thing I have is white t-shirts, in every size from XS-XL. They can use them to sleep in or use as an added layer if it’s cold in their room.
The idea came to me when our luggage did not arrive with us on a flight to London…it did come the next day. British Airways gave us a care package with a t-shirt for sleepwear.

    1. I would have never thought about that, Deborah.

  13. Thank you for this post. I keep a similar basket for our guests. I also have a small Bluetooth speaker in the guest bedroom as well as an easy to reach charging block on the nightstand since some of our guests use a c pap machine and having an easy to reach plug is a bonus. We also have a variety of chargers. I add bottled water, flowers and candy on the day our guests arrive. Everyone is always very appreciative.

  14. I always include sample size, over the counter medications like acetaminophen and an antacid.

  15. maybe a small pack of tissues, never know when allergies strike. a disposable shower cap maybe too.

    1. I forgot to mention that, Angelia. I do have a box of tissues on each nightstand. The shower cap is something I wouldn’t have thought about.
