I have a fashion alert for you, Gurls. The half-tuck is no longer in style! Neither is the full tuck or the front tuck. What’s that leave? Oh, yeah – the untucked shirt! Luckily, I’m here to help you rock this trend. I’m sharing some fantastic button-down shirts for women over 50! The only real way you can go wrong with an untucked shirt is to wear it too long so that it looks like a dress. These all will hit at a reasonable length, even for my petite gurls.

Before we go any further, I want to remind everyone that just because something is trending doesn’t mean YOU have to wear it. If you work in a professional office, wearing your shirt untucked might be frowned on. There is also a matter of the length of the shirt. Some might be so long they make your legs look shorter, which isn’t a look most of us want. You’ll still see me doing a front tuck, especially when there are details of the pants I want you to see. As always, wear what makes you comfortable and confident, not what others say is trending.

I love the fit and feel of this Classic White Shirt. It is over 60% cotton but has a little spandex and polyester, which makes it feel silky and gives it a tiny amount of stretchiness. The length is perfect for tucking in or wearing loose. I’m wearing a medium that fits great and doesn’t pull at the buttons.

Fantastic Button-Down Shirts For Women Over 50 – Plaids

Y’all should know now how much I love Talbots! I’ve purchased so many things from them over the years, and Joe almost always compliments me when I wear something from there. Anyhoo, I love this plaid shirt in cotton flannel. You can wear it with jeans or dress it up a bit with some contrasting pants. Available in Misses, Petite, and Plus.

Oooh, these colors are so pretty! This version is from Amazon, always an affordable option. While I love the blackberry color, there are several others that are cute. The suede-like material inside the cuffs and collar is a nice detail. The best news? The reviewers say this shirt is incredibly soft!

Looking for something a little lighter? This pink and cream version from Talbots is darling. It’s officially called Pink Champaign. Nice! I like the flannel fabric and the curved hem. This would look great with a pair of trending grey jeans or cream corduroys. Available in Misses, Petite, and Plus.

Fantastic Button-Down Shirts For Women Over 50 – Prints

Thanks, Talbots, for another cute shirt! This is perfect for the cold winter days. I love the foil snowflakes and would wear this to any family event, party, or even work. Pairing it with a cute vest would be great, too. I tried this shirt during a try-on haul, and the fabric is a little thin, so keep that in mind. If you think the fabric is too thin, you can wear a cami underneath it, but I thought it was fine. Available in Misses, Petite, and Plus.

LOVE! This paisley print is just gorgeous. Oh, I could wear this with so many colors! Imagine this with a cardigan of deep wine or green, or maybe the goldenrod. Wow! Of course, it’s beautiful enough on its own. This is 100% cotton, so it might need ironing if you don’t grab it straight out of the dryer. Available in Misses, Petite, and Plus.

Pineapples are a symbol of hospitality, so wear this cute button-down while entertaining! Like the one above, it’s also 100% cotton. This is a thinner shirt; you can see the top of her jeans through it in the photograph. You could wear a thin cami underneath or wear a blue tank top and leave this one unbuttoned. That’d look great! Also, take note. While it looks like the sleeves are short, she’s just pushed them up. This is a long-sleeved shirt. Available in Misses, Petite, and Plus.

Fantastic Button-Down Shirts For Women Over 50 – Solids

How about a pop of color? Yes, please! This would give the wow factor to just about anything from jeans to a plain black pair of pants. I love a shirt that I can dress up or down. This runs a bit large, so don’t size up. If anything, go down a size! If hot pink isn’t your favorite, it also comes in black, white, and a few prints. Available from XS to 6X. I styled this same shirt in a leopard print, and I’ll show it below. (it is tucked in, Lol!)

If you’ve been reading the blog for long, you know I love a good denim shirt! This is actual denim, not washed cotton, so you can wear this as a shirt or a light jacket. If you already have a blue jean jacket, don’t worry. This comes in 20 different color options! Sizes from XS to 3X.

Someone needs to let this model know that the half-tuck is OVER. Geesh. I saw this peach button-down, and all I could think about was pairing it with some white jeans. Is anyone else ready for warm weather? This is 100% cotton, so again, if wrinkles bother you be prepared to iron. This shirt is available in 20 different colors and from XS to XXLarge.

Okay, Gurls. Let me know if you’re untucking those blouses. I’d hate to send the fashion police over to your house!

Ooh, Tania, I love this look! You look stunning as always! I had to order a couple of them. Somehow I fell off your subscription list & miss your posts!

    1. Oh, no!!! I wondered where you’ve been.

  3. sue ann koren says:

    Lots of pretty plaids!

  4. Button down shirts can be very versatile!

  5. Helen Hanigan says:

    Thank you for this. Helpful

  6. I especially like a button down shirt under a sweater. Yeah to the untucked version !

  7. Love the snowflake sweater! So happy to hear we don’t have to tuck our shirts in anymore!

  8. Hallelujah! I never could quite get the hang of the front or half tuck anyway! Good news to me!

  9. Mary Carol says:

I love an untucked blouse with jeans or leggings. So comfy.
I really need a new denim blouse…maybe soon.
Have you seen any of the Grace and Frankie episodes? Grace rocks the untucked blouse and jeans look.

    1. I’ve seen one or two episdoes, but that was a long time ago.

  10. I do like the front tuck and it was simple by wearing a flat front belt and tucking my shirt under the belt. Quick and easy! The untucked is nice with the shorts shown… good length.

  11. I could never pull off that front half tuck. It felt like an affectation (“look at how cool I’m trying to be”). All hail its demise!

    Happy New Year!

  12. I will still be tucking all the way if I wear wide legs pants or jeans. Tucking your shirt in all the way is classic. I will wear untucked shirts because mine are petite and will wear with straight legs or bootleg jeans. I have short legs so for me it’s about looking taller so I will not wear tunics even if trending. Like you said it’s about what feels comfortable to us and what we feel confident in. It’s tiring to try to follow every trend.

  13. No tuck? Just when I was about to finally get the hang of it! I’m not sad that they have the/front tuck is going away – all that adjusting was not easy for me. Thanks for keeping us on trend.!! I love today’s button front top selection.

  14. So no skinny jeans and no front tuck and by the way wear crocs. Haha I think some will have issues with their proportions that we have all been indoctrinated to style for. The fashion industry keeps us guessing and repurchasing!

    1. Ummm, I think skinny may be coming back in style. We’ll have to wait and see.

  15. Laura Garrett says:

I’ve never owned a pair of crocs and doubt I ever will. I think they’re cute on kids but don’t feel they’re very flattering on women of a certain age (if you get my drift!). But, hey, get what you love. Appreciate all the shirt options – beautiful holiday colors.

  16. Linda Williams says:

I love the shirts you posted. Most of them are too long. I’m a shorty, also. I do like the half tuck because I have this tummy thing going on but I’ll manage. Thanks for the info on the tucking. Have a Great Day! 😊

  17. YES to crocs! We love them. That’s all my granddaughter wears. I like the sandal ones too. I am not a fan of tucking in blouses. But sometimes I feel it’s needed depending on the pants. These are great shirts. 😀

  18. Tuck or not tuck, that is the question—thanks for answering for us! No crocs for me.

  19. I still like the front tuck. I think it’s much more flattering because it seems to give more shape and style than untucked. I feel slouchy untucked, but we’ll see how it goes. lol. Never did understand the half tuck. That just seems so odd.

As for Crocs, ugh. I say grab some to run to the mailbox in if needed, but there’s no way they’re ever going to be stylish enough to wear in public…especially for you!

  20. Soooo glad that the half/tuck is going out of style. I could never get the look to work on me. On to the fully untucked look!!

  21. Poor pineapples… don’t ask me why they switched from hospitality to the sign that you are a swinger !🙃
I will skip the pineapple shirt – ridiculous but don’t want to be mistaken for that ?! LOL

    1. Lol! I love pineapples too, and was shocked the first time I heard that.

  22. I have two pair of the traditional croc shoes. They are comfortable and give me arch support. BUT . . . I don’t wear them out of the house. I wear them as house shoes only. 🙂

  23. Linda Shearer says:

Love all these shirts love the classic cuts. I never half tucked didnt like the trend.

  24. Pam Bowling says:

Love all the shirts- great options

  25. I love always thought all that front tuck, half tuck was crazy. Every time you went to bathroom, you had to arrange the tuck! Not for me! I’ve been ahead of the trend for years—I never tuck!

  26. Yes! to untucked shirts. I’m short so I have a hard time with them not being too long. But I was not a fan of front tucked or half tucked.

  27. Hi, CROCS – Heck, yes! I have three pairs of the ‘platform crocs’ — a house pair, and a blush colored pair and dark-cherry lined pair (for cooler weather). I love the height they give me, and great arch support. I wear them all day around the house, with socks in cooler weather. Bought mine on Amazon, had to (free) return a few pairs until I found the right fit for me. The colors work for me as I have a lot of pinks, purples, and plums in my wardrobe. 🥰

    1. Kathy R. (P.s.) says:

Tania, I was just looking on Amazon to replace my house crocs, lol, and see that they now have a ‘mega crush’ pair, which gives you 2.5+ inches of height. I’m trying those in ‘bone’, nice neutral color. 🙌💗

  28. Personally, I am not a fan of the half tuck. I feel it draws attention to my tummy. Most of the time I wear my sleeves rolled or pushed up as it seems like a more youthful look and who doesn’t want to be more youthful looking? You showed some pretty plaids.

  29. I never liked the half tuck look. always looked sloppy on a older woman.

  30. SandhillJane says:

Not a fan of the half tuck… so bye-bye to that trend! I think you should wear crocs if you like them. Everyone should be wearing what they enjoy. I always prefer a sneaker over crocs, sandals or pretty much anything else. Sneakers make me joyful after years of being a classroom teacher in more traditional footwear.

  31. I purchased a pair of Crocs Womens Literide 360 Pacer sneakers (similar to Sketchers) last spring when Amazon had them on sale for $25 (They now sell from $40 to $65 depending on where you can find them). They are very comfortable but I’m not wearing them much in the winter now as I don’t feel safe wearing the rather-open mesh material on our wet Pacific Northwest rainy days.

  32. Love these shirts and I’ve had my eye on the snowflake shirt for awhile now.

  33. Several beautiful blouses. Glad the half tuck is not trending for now, as a petite I found it hard to get the right look. I enjoy wearing blouses with a vest.

  34. Interesting about the tucking or not tucking shirts. Thank you for the update
