Best Dresses with Sleeves for Women Over 50

As much as I love summer, there are days when I don’t necessarily want to wear a sleeveless dress. Sometimes I’m heading to church, sometimes I know I’ll be sitting in a restaurant where the air conditioning feels like January, and sometimes I simply want a little extra coverage. Can anyone else relate??

The good news is that wearing sleeves in the summer doesn’t mean you have to be hot or covered from your neck to your ankles. Lol! Fabric, fit, and sleeve style make a huge difference.

I’ve worn quite a few dresses with sleeves over the past couple of years, so I wanted to update this post with more of the things I personally pay attention to now: Is the fabric breathable? Does the sleeve actually feel comfortable? Is the neckline too low? Does the waist hit in the right place? And most importantly, am I going to reach for the dress again after the photos are taken?

Those are the little details you don’t always get from looking at a product photo online.

What I Look for in a Summer Dress With Sleeves

Before we get to the dresses, there are a few things I’ve learned to look for.

Lightweight fabric matters more than sleeve length. A loose cotton, linen, gauze, or other breathable fabric can sometimes feel cooler than a sleeveless dress made from something heavy that traps heat.

The sleeve needs room. I don’t want a summer sleeve squeezing my upper arm. Flutter sleeves, relaxed short sleeves, dolman sleeves, and loose three-quarter sleeves are usually much more comfortable.

I pay attention to the neckline too. A dress can have wonderful arm coverage and then surprise you with a neckline that requires a camisole, bralette, or strategic pin. Ask me how I know. Lol!

And I want versatility. If I can wear a dress to church, dinner, vacation, and then throw a denim jacket or cardigan over it once the weather cools, I’m much more likely to feel like I got my money’s worth.

Dresses With Sleeves I’ve Personally Worn

These are the dresses where I can tell you more than what the description says because I’ve actually had them on my body.

I’m not going to lie, I love this Leopard Print Caftan! I love it so much that I have it in blue too.

This is probably the most relaxed dress in today’s post, and that is part of its appeal. I wear it around the house instead of pajamas, but add jewelry, a nice sandal or heel, and a clutch, and it suddenly looks completely different.

The loose sleeves give you arm coverage without hugging you, and the relaxed body makes it especially nice on hot days when the last thing I want is fabric clinging to me.

It would also work beautifully as a swimsuit cover-up, so this is one of those pieces that can earn its keep in several different ways.

This Short Sleeve Crewneck Tie Waist Dress has stuck around as a favorite for a reason.

I’m wearing a medium, and I especially like the tie at the waist because it gives the dress shape without making the entire midsection snug. I can adjust the tie instead of having the dress decide exactly where my waist is supposed to be, which I appreciate. Lol!

The fabric feels soft and comfortable, and the short sleeves give you coverage while still keeping the dress appropriate for warmer weather.

This is an easy style to dress up with jewelry and heels, but I’d be just as happy wearing it with flat sandals for dinner or church.

The Rory Vintage Stonewashed Indigo Dress is one I’ve owned for a few years, and I still love it. Several ladies have messaged me asking about the dress I wear in my sign-up email, and this is the one.

That longevity is probably the best recommendation I can give you. Plenty of clothes come through my house, so when something is still hanging around years later, it has earned its spot.

This dress runs a little large, and the medium fit me perfectly. I love the relaxed shape, longer length, button-front design, and collar. The structure keeps the oversized style looking polished.

The sleeves can also be rolled, which makes it much more versatile. I can wear it alone during transitional weather and then layer it later with boots or loafers.

If you prefer dresses that don’t emphasize the waist, this is a style I would look for.

This Printed Cotton-Linen Belted Dress immediately caught my eye because the print feels fresh without being fussy.

The green and white combination is crisp for summer, but the real winner for me is the cotton-linen fabric. When temperatures climb, I start paying much more attention to what a dress is made from.

I also love the split neckline and three-quarter sleeves. You get nice arm coverage, but the sleeve isn’t tight or heavy.

The border print around the neckline and hem gives the dress a pretty finished look, so I kept my jewelry fairly simple with my Dove Cross Necklace and Heirloom Initial Pendant Necklace.

This would be lovely for church, lunch, a shower, or vacation.

This Linen Safari Shirtdress is another good example of why I like linen for hot weather.

First, let’s get one thing out of the way. Linen wrinkles. If you want linen that stays perfectly smooth all day, you and linen might need counseling. Lol!

I don’t mind some wrinkles because that relaxed appearance is part of wearing linen, but I still want enough structure that I feel put-together.

I’m wearing a size 10, and the fit was easy and comfortable. It came with a belt, but I preferred it without the belt on me.

Sometimes a belt adds wonderful definition. Other times it points a giant arrow toward the exact area I was perfectly happy ignoring. I reserve the right to choose peace over waist definition.

The collar, buttons, and pockets give this dress enough structure that I thought it looked great worn loose.

The brown is also a wonderful transition color. Later in the season, I could add a denim jacket, cardigan, or closed-toe shoe and keep right on wearing it.

A Pretty Maxi Dress With More Coverage

I wore this Cream and Blue Floral Maxi Dress for our family photos, and I loved how it photographed with all of the soft greens and blues everyone was wearing.

The longer length and sleeves gave it a dressier look without making me feel overly formal, and it was comfortable enough to wear outside during family photos.

If you’ve ever participated in family photos, you know “comfortable” matters. They sound so sweet beforehand. Then someone is blinking, somebody else is hot, a child has decided they’re finished, and the babies are apparently the executive producers of the entire operation. Lol!

There is one thing I absolutely want you to know before ordering this dress. The neckline was very low-cut on me.

I wore my Enbliss Mesh Bralette underneath it. If you look extremely closely, you can see a little of the mesh, but I felt covered and secure. If you don’t like low necklines, I would plan from the beginning to add a camisole or pretty bralette, or have the neckline altered slightly.

I always want to mention details like that because a dress can be beautiful and still have something you need to work around.

Pretty Dresses With Sleeves for Special Occasions

If you need something a little dressier, this eyelet maxi dress from Lands’ End caught my eye. Eyelet gives a summer dress texture and interest without requiring a busy print, and I like the combination of the sleeves and longer tiered silhouette.

I could see this being a pretty option for church, a bridal shower, a summer luncheon, or a wedding depending on the dress code.

Since I haven’t personally tried this one, I would check the current reviews for fit and pay particular attention to what reviewers say about the lining and how the sleeves fit through the upper arm.

That’s something I always check when shopping for dresses online.

Easy Everyday Dresses With Sleeves

For everyday summer wear, this linen shift dress from Talbots has several things going for it. You get the breathability of linen, an easy shape that doesn’t depend on a defined waist, and sleeves for a little additional coverage.

The blue and white painted-palm print also feels summery without limiting you to one occasion. I’d wear a dress like this with flat sandals or a simple sneaker for a casual day, then add jewelry and a nicer sandal if I were going to lunch.

Because it isn’t overly fitted, this is also the kind of silhouette I’d consider for sightseeing or a warm-weather vacation

If you prefer a little more shape, this pintuck-waist shirt dress from Old Navy goes in the opposite direction from the linen shift. The shirt-dress styling is classic, while the pintuck detail adds definition through the waist without needing a separate belt.

I especially like it in black because it gives you a blank canvas. Change the shoes, handbag, and jewelry, and you can make it as casual or polished as you want.

This is also one I could see moving into early fall with loafers and a lightweight cardigan.

A Feminine Floral Dress With Sleeves

This floral dress from Talbots is for anyone who loves a more feminine, traditional dress. The fit-and-flare shape gives definition through the upper body before opening into a fuller skirt. If you like showing some waist but don’t want fabric clinging through your hips and thighs, this is a silhouette worth trying.

I could easily see this for church, a luncheon, a shower, or another occasion where you want to look polished without wearing anything too formal.

I’d let the floral print do most of the work and keep the shoes and accessories fairly simple.

A Comfortable Vacation Dress With Long Sleeves

Don’t automatically rule out long sleeves in the summer.

This cotton gauze tiered dress from Quince is a good example of why fabric and fit matter just as much as how much skin is covered.

Cotton gauze is lightweight, and the relaxed sleeves give you coverage without looking heavy.

I especially like this type of dress for travel. Airplanes and airports can be freezing, restaurants can blast the air conditioning, and once you’re outside, you still want something lightweight.

The navy also makes this easy to transition later. Add a denim jacket, cardigan, or even ankle boots as temperatures cool, and you can extend the season instead of packing it away immediately after Labor Day.

Which Sleeve Style Is Best?

If you’re trying to decide what type of sleeve you might like best, here’s how I tend to think about them.

• Flutter sleeves give coverage without fitting closely around the upper arm.
• Short relaxed sleeves are easy for everyday wear and usually layer well under jackets and cardigans.
• Three-quarter sleeves are wonderful if you want more coverage but don’t want the heaviness of a full sleeve.
• Long, loose sleeves can work even in warm weather when the fabric is lightweight and breathable.
• Puff sleeves add visual interest, but pay attention to where the volume sits. A smaller puff can be very pretty. A giant puff and I start feeling like I’m auditioning for a historical drama. Lol!

There really isn’t one “correct” sleeve for women over 50. The right one is the sleeve that gives you the coverage you want and still lets you move comfortably.

Don’t Forget the Fabric

When I shop for a dress with sleeves in warm weather, I look at fabric almost immediately.

Cotton, linen, cotton-linen blends, and gauze are some of the first fabrics I consider because I want air to circulate.

I also pay attention to lining. A lightweight outer fabric doesn’t help much if the entire dress has a heavy lining underneath it.

And remember that linen is going to wrinkle. That isn’t a defect. It’s part of linen’s personality, and apparently linen has decided it is too old to care what anyone thinks. I can respect that. Lol!

Getting More Wear From Your Summer Dresses

One of my goals lately has been to pay more attention to how long I can actually wear something. A short-sleeve dress doesn’t have to disappear when August does.

Try adding:

• A denim jacket
• A lightweight cardigan
• A blazer
• Loafers instead of sandals
• Ballet flats
• Ankle boots once the weather cools
• A leather or suede handbag instead of raffia

Even changing the accessories from summery straw and raffia to leather can make the same dress feel more appropriate for fall.

I would much rather buy something I can wear several ways than have a closet full of pieces that work for one specific event.

My Final Thoughts on Dresses With Sleeves for Women Over 50

After trying so many different dresses, I’ve learned that I don’t need every dress to camouflage, minimize, elongate, lift, smooth, or perform some other minor miracle before breakfast.

Sometimes I simply want a dress that feels comfortable, looks nice, gives me the coverage I want, and lets me walk out the door without fussing with it. Sleeves can be part of that.

The biggest things I look at are fabric, room through the sleeve, neckline, overall fit, and where I’m realistically going to wear the dress.

And if a dress is comfortable enough that I keep reaching for it after I’ve already photographed it for the blog? That’s probably the best test of all.
