Best Makeup Mirrors for Women Over 50: What I Actually Use

Gurls, I’m not sure exactly when putting on makeup became an eyesight test, but here we are. Lol!

There was a time when I could stand in front of a regular bathroom mirror, put on my makeup, pluck my eyebrows, and head out the door without giving it another thought.

These days, I need LIGHT. I need a little magnification. And every once in a while, apparently I need a mirror capable of locating a chin hair that has somehow escaped detection until I get into the car. Why is the visor mirror always the bearer of bad news?!?

The good news is that makeup mirrors have gotten much better. The right lighting and magnification can make a huge difference, especially when you’re trying to apply eyeliner, fill in brows, blend foundation, or simply see what you’re doing.

I’ve used several different makeup mirrors over the years, including the Riki Loves Riki mirror I use regularly and a smaller Nikol Beauty mirror for travel. So instead of giving you a huge list of mirrors and leaving you to figure it out, I thought it would be more helpful to explain what different magnifications actually do, what I personally use, and which features might be worth looking for.

What Magnification Do You Really Need in a Makeup Mirror?

This was something I didn’t understand until I started using magnifying mirrors myself. Bigger isn’t necessarily better.

For putting on most of my makeup, I want to see my whole face normally. That’s important because I want to know that my foundation is blended, my blush is balanced, and one eyebrow isn’t headed north while the other one is taking the scenic route south. Lol!

Here’s how I think about magnification:

1X: Best for looking at your entire face and applying most makeup.

5X: This is my sweet spot for things like eye makeup, brows, liner, and seeing smaller details without making my face look completely foreign to me.

10X: Helpful for very close work, particularly brows, mascara, eyeliner, and those pesky facial hairs.

20X, 30X, or 40X: These are precision tools in my book. I wouldn’t try to put on an entire face of makeup using this much magnification. They’re better for tweezing or finding something you simply can’t see with a regular mirror.

If you’re buying only one makeup mirror, I think having a regular mirror along with 5X or 10X magnification gives you the most versatility.

What I Actually Use

Before we get into all the choices, let me show you the mirrors that have actually earned space in my house and suitcase.

Riki Loves Riki Lighted Makeup Mirror

I bought my Riki Loves Riki mirror years ago when I started taking blogging seriously. When you’re taking close-up beauty photos and putting your face on the internet regularly, you suddenly become VERY interested in good lighting. Lol!

This is still the type of mirror I prefer for everyday makeup because I can see my entire face clearly instead of applying makeup one eyeball at a time.

The lighting is bright and even, and I can adjust it instead of being at the mercy of whatever lighting happens to be in the room.

It also has a magnetic magnifying attachment that I can put on when I need a closer look.

The 5X magnification is enough for me to see my eyebrows, eyeliner, mascara, and the little details I might otherwise miss, but it isn’t so strong that I suddenly start examining every pore I’ve acquired since 1985.

Joe has even been known to use my Riki mirror occasionally. No, he isn’t borrowing my mascara. Lol! But apparently men eventually discover that magnification can be handy, too.

For everyday use, this is the style I would choose first.

My Travel Makeup Mirror

Nikol Beauty 10X Magnification Mirror

Travel is where I really notice how much I’ve gotten used to having a good mirror. Hotel bathrooms can have an enormous mirror, gorgeous countertops, and enough mood lighting for a romantic dinner…while somehow making it impossible to put on mascara.

That’s why I like having a smaller lighted mirror I can take with me. My Nikol Beauty mirror gives me the magnification I need without taking up much room.

The 10X magnification is definitely closer than I would want for putting on my entire face, but that’s exactly why it’s useful for eye makeup, eyebrows, and those little areas I can’t see well in a regular hotel mirror.

If you travel frequently, I think a compact lighted mirror is one of those things you don’t realize you’ll appreciate until you have one.

Lighted Makeup Mirrors for Everyday Use

If you don’t already have a makeup mirror, lighting would be one of my first considerations.

A bathroom can look perfectly bright until you try to blend foundation or put on eyeliner. Good, even lighting lets you see shadows and blending much better than simply turning on another overhead light.

Here are several styles that caught my eye for different needs.

HUONUL Trifold Lighted Makeup Mirror

The HUONUL Trifold Lighted Makeup Mirror has a large center mirror plus side panels with different levels of magnification. I like the idea of the trifold design because you’re able to see your face from several angles without picking up and repositioning the mirror.

It includes 2X, 3X, and 10X magnification, so this would be a good choice for someone who wants an all-in-one mirror instead of buying separate magnifying attachments.

It can also be powered using USB or batteries, which gives you more flexibility about where you keep it.

Conair Reflections Double-Sided Mirror

If you prefer something simpler, the Conair Reflections Double-Sided Mirror has a regular 1X side and a 10X magnifying side. I like this type of design for someone who doesn’t need all the extra features and simply wants a mirror that can sit on the bathroom counter or vanity.

You can use the regular side for most of your makeup and flip it around when you need help with the details. And I’ll admit, the rose gold finish is much prettier sitting on the counter than some of the very utilitarian magnifying mirrors.

When You Need to See EVERYTHING

There is magnification, and then there is MAGNIFICATION.

If you’ve ever finished getting ready, gotten into the car, flipped down the visor mirror, and thought, Where did THAT hair come from?, this section is for you.

Just remember, I wouldn’t choose these high magnifications for normal makeup application. They make much more sense for precision work.

B Beauty Planet 30X Magnifying Mirror

The B Beauty Planet 30X Magnifying Mirror has a regular 1X mirror on one side and a whopping 30X magnification on the other. Thirty times magnification is a LOT. I think this level makes the most sense for eyebrows, facial hairs, very close eyeliner work, or other tiny details.

It also has three light settings, which is especially helpful when you’re working this close to your face.

MIYADIVA 40X Magnifying Mirror and Tweezers

Apparently someone looked at 30X magnification and said, “Nope. I need MORE.” Lol!

The MIYADIVA 40X Magnifying Mirror and Tweezers is only about 3.5 inches across and comes with stainless steel tweezers. It has suction cups that allow you to attach it to another mirror, which makes much more sense to me than using 40X as your primary mirror.

I would reserve this one for serious eyebrow work and tracking down hairs that are apparently participating in some sort of witness protection program.

Forty times magnification will tell me things about myself I probably don’t need to know. Lol!

A Small Magnifying Mirror You Can Attach to Your Bathroom Mirror

Fancii 10X Lighted Magnifying Mirror

The Fancii 10X Lighted Magnifying Mirror is a nice middle ground between a large vanity mirror and one of the super-high-powered mirrors above. It has daylight-style LED lighting, 10X magnification, and a locking suction cup that attaches to a smooth surface.

It also rotates 360 degrees, so you can move the mirror rather than trying to move your entire body into exactly the right position.

This would make sense if you already like your bathroom mirror but simply need extra help seeing your eyes, brows, or other details.

Makeup Mirrors With Extra Features

I didn’t know our mirrors needed technology until I started looking at some of the newer options. Apparently, simply reflecting our faces is no longer enough. Lol!

Some of these features are genuinely useful, though, especially if you have limited counter space.

INSMART LED Makeup Mirror With Wireless Charging

The INSMART LED Makeup Mirror with Wireless Charging has three lighting colors and adjustable brightness, but the feature that makes it different is the base. It doubles as a wireless phone charger and phone stand.

If you like watching a makeup tutorial while you’re getting ready, listening to something on your phone, or simply charging it while you do your makeup, I can see the appeal. I also like anything that eliminates another cord lying across the bathroom counter.

iHome Reflect II Vanity Mirror

The iHome Reflect II Vanity Mirror takes the technology another step further with LED lighting, Bluetooth audio, a speakerphone, and USB charging.

This isn’t something everyone needs, and I wouldn’t pay for those features unless I knew I’d actually use them.

But if you listen to music, podcasts, audiobooks, or take calls while getting ready, having those features built into the mirror could help keep a vanity or bathroom counter less cluttered.

Large Lighted Mirrors for a Dedicated Vanity

Some of you have a dedicated dressing table or makeup area. If that’s the case, I’d probably skip the tiny mirrors and take advantage of the space.

A larger mirror lets you see your whole face at once, which I prefer for checking foundation, blush, bronzer, and overall makeup.

Fenchilin 32″ x 23″ Lighted Vanity Mirror

The Fenchilin 32″ x 23″ Lighted Vanity Mirror is large enough to feel more like a true dressing-room setup. You can place it on a tabletop or mount it on the wall, which is worth considering if counter space is precious. It also has built-in lighting and Bluetooth.

This is more of an investment in a permanent getting-ready space than a simple makeup mirror, so I’d choose something this large only if you know where it’s going to live.

Large Lighted Vanity Mirror

This Large Lighted Vanity Mirror measures approximately 39 by 27 inches, so you still get a large view without having quite as much mirror taking over the room. It has three light colors, adjustable brightness, touch controls, and 360-degree rotation.

If I had a dedicated vanity, adjustable lighting would be one feature I’d definitely want. Makeup can look very different under warm indoor lighting compared with daylight, and being able to check both is helpful.

A Travel Mirror for Your Suitcase

FUNTOUCH Lighted Travel Mirror

The FUNTOUCH Lighted Travel Mirror is another option for anyone who doesn’t want to depend on hotel bathroom lighting. It folds flat and is rechargeable, so it would be easy to keep packed with your travel things.

It also has three light colors, which can help you see how your makeup looks under different types of lighting.

After using a travel mirror myself, this is one category I think is particularly useful for women who travel often. I don’t need my home setup recreated in a hotel room. I just want enough light to see what I’m doing.

What Should You Look for Before Buying a Makeup Mirror?

After using makeup mirrors myself and looking at all the different options available, I think there are a few features that matter more than the rest.

Good Lighting

I would put this above extreme magnification. Being able to clearly see your entire face under even lighting can help with foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, and blending. Adjustable brightness is even better.

The Right Magnification

Don’t automatically buy the highest number. For most makeup, you still need to see your whole face. 5X is a very useful magnification for makeup details, while 10X and higher make more sense for close precision work.

Adjustability

A mirror that tilts, rotates, or adjusts in height is much easier to use than one that forces you to bend over the bathroom counter. My back doesn’t need to participate in my beauty routine. Lol!

Where You’ll Actually Use It

This matters more than all the bells and whistles. If you get ready at a vanity every morning, buy a mirror suited to that space.

If your bathroom counter is already crowded, consider a compact mirror or one that attaches to your existing mirror.

And if you travel frequently, a folding rechargeable mirror might get far more use than a beautiful 30-inch vanity mirror.

Are Lighted Makeup Mirrors Worth It for Women Over 50?

For me, yes. Not because turning 50 suddenly means we can’t see anything. But our eyes change, our lighting needs can change, and precision work can become more difficult.

I would much rather improve the lighting and use a little magnification than fight with my eyeliner every morning.

I’ve also found that good lighting helps me avoid applying more makeup than I actually need. When you can’t see well, it’s easy to keep adding foundation, blush, or eye makeup because you’re not seeing the color or blending clearly.

Sometimes the problem isn’t our makeup at all. We just need to be able to see what we’re doing.

What magnification is best for applying makeup?

For most of my makeup, I prefer seeing my face at normal magnification and then using approximately 5X magnification for details. A 10X mirror can be helpful for eye makeup, brows, and facial hairs, but it can be too strong for applying a full face of makeup.

Is 10X magnification too strong?

One More Thing

Beauty routines change as we get older, but that doesn’t always mean we need more products. Sometimes we simply need better tools.

Good lighting, useful magnification, and a mirror positioned where you can comfortably see it can make getting ready so much easier.

And after trying different magnifications, I’ve learned that I don’t necessarily want to see everything all the time. There are days when 5X is plenty. Lol!
