Best Bermuda Shorts For Women Over 50

You know what I love? Bermuda shorts. Seriously, they’ve become a summer must-have in my wardrobe, especially once I passed the age of 50.

Shorts can be tricky after 50. Some are too short, some are too tight, and some make you feel like you borrowed them from your teenage granddaughter, which is not usually the goal. Lol! That is why I love Bermuda shorts. They give you coverage, comfort, and a little breathing room, but they still feel summery and cute.

Since this post was such a hit, I’m giving it a fresh update for 2026 with current styles, fits, and finds. There are so many great pairs out there right now, so how does one pick? Today, I’m sharing what to look for in Bermuda shorts, how to choose the most flattering fit, and some of my favorite pairs that I actually have hanging in my closet.

What Are Bermuda Shorts

Bermuda shorts are longer shorts that usually hit a few inches above the knee or close to the knee. I usually look for a 9-inch inseam or longer because that length gives me coverage without making me feel like I’m wearing cropped pants.

If you are petite, you may want to look for petite sizing or a slightly shorter inseam so the shorts do not overwhelm your frame. A 10-inch short on me may look completely different on someone several inches shorter, so always pay attention to where the shorts hit your leg, not just the number on the tag.

Why Bermuda Shorts Work So Well for Women Over 50

Bermuda shorts are one of my favorite summer options because they give you a little more coverage without feeling hot or heavy. I don’t know about you, but I’m not trying to spend July tugging at shorts that are riding up, clinging to my thighs, or making me wonder if I should have just worn pants and sweated through it. No, thank you.

The right pair of Bermuda shorts can look casual with a tee and sandals, but they can also be dressed up with a blouse, jewelry, and a wedge sandal. That makes them a great choice for errands, lunch with friends, vacation, cookouts, and those days when you want to look put together but still feel comfortable.

They are also a good option if you want to show a little leg without feeling like everything is on display. I like shorts that let me move, sit, bend, and live my life without constantly adjusting them. Life is too short for high-maintenance shorts.

How to Choose Flattering Bermuda Shorts After 50

The best Bermuda shorts are not just about length. Fit matters just as much. I look for shorts that skim the body instead of squeezing it, especially through the hips and thighs. A little structure is nice because it keeps the shorts from looking sloppy, but I still want enough stretch to sit, bend, and move without feeling like I need to unbutton them before dessert.

A 9-inch to 12-inch inseam usually works well for most women, but height makes a difference. If you are petite, a 7-inch or 9-inch short may give you the same Bermuda look without cutting your leg in half visually. If you are taller, a 10-inch or 12-inch inseam may feel more comfortable and balanced.

I also pay attention to the leg opening. If the shorts are too narrow, they can cling and pull across the thighs. If they are too wide, they can look boxy. The sweet spot is a pair that follows the shape of your leg without grabbing it.

Fabric also makes a difference. Denim is casual and sturdy, chino shorts look polished, linen blends are breathable, and pull-on styles are wonderful when comfort is the main goal. I’m all for looking cute, but I’m also not interested in wearing anything that makes me miserable by lunchtime.

Linen Blend Bermuda Short

These Linen Blend Bermuda Shorts are a great option if you want something lightweight but still structured. The linen blend keeps them cool for summer, but they do not have that super wrinkly look that pure linen can sometimes have.

NYDJ usually does a great job with shaping, so these are nice if you want a pair of shorts that feel comfortable but still give you a smoother fit through the waist and hips. They would be easy to style with a tee, a sleeveless blouse, or even a lightweight cardigan if you like a little arm coverage.

High Waist Relaxed Denim Shorts

You already know I love Wit & Wisdom for their comfort, and these Relaxed Denim Shorts are no exception. The high waist helps smooth everything out, while the relaxed fit keeps them from clinging to the thighs.

These are the kind of shorts you can throw on with a simple top and sandals and not think twice about. I love pieces like that in the summer because getting dressed should not feel like a math problem. Add a cute pair of earrings and a crossbody bag, and you’re good to go.

Relaxed Linen Blend Bermuda Short

These Linen Blend Bermuda Shorts are easy, breezy, and perfect for hot summer days. The relaxed fit makes them comfortable, while the linen blend keeps them from feeling heavy or stiff.

This is the kind of pair I would reach for on a casual day at home, while running errands, or when I want to look a little nicer than workout shorts but still feel relaxed. They would also be great for vacation because they can be styled with a tank, tee, button-up shirt, or swimsuit cover-up.

Classic 12″ Chino Shorts

These Classic Chino Shorts are one of those tried-and-true pairs that never go out of style. The 12-inch length gives you great coverage, but they still look neat and streamlined.

If you like a classic, polished look, chino shorts are hard to beat. They are a little dressier than denim but still casual enough for everyday wear. I would style these with a striped top, a white button-up shirt, or a simple tee and sandals. They are a great choice if you want shorts that feel age-appropriate without looking frumpy.

Perfect Shorts Seersucker 10″

These Seersucker 10″ shorts just scream summer to me. The seersucker fabric is lightweight and breathable, and it adds a little texture that makes an outfit feel more interesting.

Talbots always does a great job with classic summer pieces, and these would be cute with a sleeveless top, a linen shirt, or even a lightweight sweater for cooler evenings. If you like shorts that feel fresh and a little preppy, these are a good option.

Pull-On Scallop Button Jean Shorts

I love a pull-on short, and these Pull-On Jean Shorts make getting dressed so simple. No zipper, no fuss, and no waistband digging in when you sit down, which is always appreciated.

The scalloped hem and button detail give them a little personality without making them look too young. They are still casual denim shorts, but the details make them feel a little more feminine and fun. I would wear these with a simple white tee, a colorful top, or a lightweight blouse.

Kut from the Kloth Hailey High Waist Denim Bermuda Shorts

Kut from the Kloth just gets denim right, and these Bermuda Shorts are a great example. The high waist gives a smoother fit, and the longer length is flattering if you prefer more coverage.

They have enough stretch to stay comfortable throughout the day, which matters because nobody wants denim shorts that feel good standing up and terrible the second you sit down. These would be easy to wear with sneakers, sandals, or wedges, depending on where you are headed.

Soft Denim High Rise 7″ Pleated Trouser Shorts

If you don’t want a full Bermuda, these Pleated Trouser Shorts are a nice shorter option. The pleats give them a slightly dressier feel, almost like a little pair of trousers, but the soft denim keeps them casual.

These would be cute with a nicer top and sandals when you want a summer outfit that feels a little more elevated. They are shorter than traditional Bermuda shorts, so they may be a good option for petite ladies or anyone who feels like longer shorts make their legs look shorter.

Pleat Front Bermuda Shorts

These Pleat Front Bermuda Shorts feel a little more tailored, which I like. The pleat front gives you a bit of room through the hips and thighs, and they look more put-together than a basic pair of shorts.

This is a great option if you want your shorts to feel a step up from casual. I would wear these with a blouse, a tucked-in tee, or a lightweight cardigan. Add a wedge sandal or a flat sandal, and you have a comfortable summer outfit that still looks intentional.

Bermuda Shorts I’ve Worn and How I Styled Them

These colorful Bermuda shorts are a great length. I love the straight-leg style because it is flattering for my silhouette. They are not too tight or too loose, they are just right.

These shorts have pockets and a pull-on style, which makes them extra comfortable for everyday wear. I like colorful shorts because they make a basic top feel more fun, and you can still keep the rest of the outfit simple. Sometimes one colorful piece is all you need to make an outfit feel cheerful.

White shorts are what I wear most in the summer. The 10″ slim-fit Bermuda shorts hit just above the knee and look great on most body types.

If you are petite, you can look taller by tucking in your top or wearing a cropped top. That helps create a longer leg line and keeps the outfit from looking too boxy. White Bermuda shorts are fresh, classic, and easy to style with almost any color. Just make sure they are not too tight, because white can show every little seam, pocket, and undergarment line if the fit is too snug.

These are the same Bermuda shorts as the white pair, but in navy. Some ladies prefer not to wear white, so I wanted to style a navy pair for a different look.

Navy is a great summer neutral because it still feels classic, but it is a little softer than black. If I wear navy on navy, I would probably add a kimono, cardigan, or lighter accessory to add visual interest. A straw clutch or neutral sandal keeps the outfit from feeling too dark for summer.

Denim Bermuda Shorts are durable, casual, and great for real-life summer days. I love wearing shorts like this if I’m outside working, running errands, or just need something easy that can handle whatever the day brings.

Of course, you can wear denim Bermuda shorts almost anywhere casual. They are great for lounging around the house, heading to the grocery store, or meeting a friend for lunch. I like that they feel relaxed without looking messy, especially when paired with a cute top and sandals.

I love wearing monochromatic outfits since they create a long, lean silhouette, so I loved this next look. White on white is a look I love wearing in the summer months. I usually add a cardigan, jacket, or cardigan to the look to add a bit of interest, like I did with this kimono style top.

These Bermuda Shorts fit nicely and are a bit loose, which I like when wearing white shorts. That helps make sure you cannot see every little detail underneath. I would also suggest wearing nude undergarments with white shorts because white under white is not always your friend. Learned that one the hard way, and we will just leave it there. Lol!

These olive green Bermuda shorts are a great change-up from neutral colors like tan, navy, or black, but they still match with almost everything. Olive is one of those colors that quietly does a lot of work in your wardrobe.

I like olive shorts with white, cream, black, navy, chambray, or even a striped top. They feel casual but still a little more interesting than basic khaki. If you already have white and denim shorts in your closet, olive is a nice color to add next.

How to Keep Bermuda Shorts From Looking Frumpy

The biggest trick is balance. Since Bermuda shorts are longer, I usually like to keep the top a little more fitted, tucked, or slightly cropped. That does not mean tight, it just means you want some shape. A long, oversized top with long shorts can make the whole outfit look boxy.

Adding jewelry, a cute sandal, or a structured handbag also helps. Bermuda shorts are casual by nature, so a few polished accessories can make them look intentional instead of like you grabbed the first thing you found in the laundry basket. Not that I’ve ever done that. Ahem.

One Last Thing

Bermuda shorts are one of those summer pieces that can make getting dressed so much easier. They give you coverage, comfort, and versatility, which is exactly what I want when the weather is hot and sticky.

The key is finding the right length, the right fit, and the right fabric for your body and your lifestyle. Once you find a pair you love, you will probably reach for them over and over again. I know I do.

So, gurls, what about you? Do you wear Bermuda shorts in the summer, or are you still trying to find a pair that feels just right?
