Fashion Blogger 50 Is Not Old is wearing a black and white print dress from Talbots with beige and white heels and is sitting on a rock

Last week, I shared with all of you how I had given my husband a Talbot’s catalog, and I asked him to pick out a few outfits for me. The outfit last week he picked was a complete surprise for me; it did not seem to be his taste. Today’s outfit was an even bigger surprise because I honestly hated it when I saw what he had picked.

In fact, I didn’t even notice this black and white printed dress when I looked through the catalog, and I had looked through it several times. The dress did not stand out to me, so his pick was a shock. I even asked him if he was sure that the dress was what he wanted me to order.

This is the photo from the catalog!

He shook his head enthusiastically and said, “I think this will look great on you!” UGH! I was not happy about his pick, and I even considered NOT ordering it when I ordered some of “my” picks. However, a deal is a deal, so I ordered the dress as I muttered under my breath, “this is going to be a disaster!”

When the box arrived, I hurriedly tried on the first outfit that he picked out. It was one that I had also picked, and I was kind of surprised that I liked it, but I didn’t LOVE it. The individual items were fine, but I didn’t love them when worn together. Then, I grudgingly decided to try on the dress. HOLD THE FRONT DOOR!!! This dress was so flattering, so feminine, and I was thrilled with the way that it fit me!

The flutter sleeves are cute, and they hide a lot of my upper arm, which is not a bad thing. The fit and flare style is also very flattering, and it helps create curves for this ruler-shaped body of mine. A v-neck is always my choice for a neckline, but the added contrasting print of the dress brings your eye to that area which elongates the neck even more!

I ordered my usual size 12 in the dress, and it fits like it was made especially for me!

I added a quilted black handbag and a pair of beige and white Rockport heels to my look. The black handbag has sold out in black, but it is still available in navy, red, and taupe, which would look great with the heels. The white and beige version is almost sold out, but I found a black version that has sizes available, and it is at a huge discount. These heels run true to size, and I am wearing my usual size 9.

Talbots is having their first-ever SPRING Red Hanger Sale. I went shopping and grabbed some things for myself, and here are a few items that I thought you might love.

I am not sure who got the last laugh with this experiment, me or Joe. When I came out to show him the dress and told him that I LOVED how it looked on me, he was not surprised at all. He said, “I’m a man; we know what looks good on women.” I am not sure that is the case, or if it was just beginner’s luck, but I have to admit that I would NOT have ordered this if he hadn’t picked it out.

So, what do you think? Would this dress have caught your eye if you had seen the photo in the catalog?

like to see it worn with red heels.

  15. Maribeth Conklin says:

Not sure how I feel about the dress. In some photos I love it on you. In others not so much. It seems like it has a log of fabric to it. I like the bottom of THE dress the best.

  25. Joe nailed it! It looks darling on you and your face shows it!

  26. That is a fun, flattering, flowy, fashionable, fabulous dress!!! That man knows how to make Tania shine!!!

  27. aimee spencer says:

I love this dress on you. I have a similar v neck polka dot dress. So we can wear these dresses according to Joe and look good! LOL

  28. I really like it! My husband of 36 years (and who sounds a lot like Joe) decided to pick out my dress for our rehearsal dinner 36 years ago. He was so proud of himself, and I still remember him showing me the dress – it was off white and was a beautiful flowy fabric, but it had a pleated skirt and a bronze satin belt. I would have NEVER picked it out. I tried it on, in the back of my mind thinking that it would look hideous and he’d agree we needed to return it. To my surprise and his delight, it looked great and I loved it!!! I got so many compliments on it, and have saved it all of these years. Even though it no longer fits it always makes me smile and reminds me to get out of my comfort zone!

  29. Carrie Kujath says:

I have to agree with Karen – I LOVE the dress, just too high of a price tag for me! But it is so flattering on you – maybe when it goes on sale??? I don’t know if I’m brave enough for this experiment, but I just might try it and ask my husband to pick something out for me!

  30. Dress is beautiful on you. Great job Joe!

  31. The dress looks beautiful on you. Great job Joe!

  32. I would order that dress in a heartbeat if it didn’t cost so much. Joe could start his own business picking out clothing for women LOL

  33. Me likey!!! Good job Joe.

  34. Charlcy Green says:

Joe was right! I instantly loved this dress and it IS very flattering on you! Plus I think he did a good job on last week’s outfit! He obviously knows you well!
PS What do you do w all these clothes you buy? You can’t keep them all plus all your older cute things!?

  35. Love this dress. So feminine and flirty and very flattering on you. Good job Joe!!

  36. Joe did a great job. Love the shoes. Simple yet classy!

  37. I didn’t notice this dress in the catalog either. I’m going to see if they still have my size. Talbots clothes can be deceiving. Some may look matronly in the catalog but are actually really cute and modern looking.

  38. Leslie High says:

Love this dress on you! Good eye, Joe! My late husband loved to buy clothes for me and 99% of the time it was something I wouldn’t have picked or paid that much for, yet looked great on me! I’d give anything to have him here to do it again.
Keep up the good work, Joe!

  39. Loved the dress! It looked great on you ! Good job Joe!

  40. Terri Davis says:

I would have never considered it in the catalog. But on you-I absolutely love it! So feminine. And loving those Rockports! “Joe done good” Tania!

  41. I am loving this dress on you! It is so flattering, fresh and fun!

  42. Catherine says:

I think it’s really important to show the photo of clothes on a model, then show it on a “real” body. That model is obviously too tall and thin for that dress (ha! Poor thing) but it looks great on you. Talbots needs to get onto the 21st century train and show more women of different body shape. I also wish they would rearrange their catalog – I find It difficult to decipher which item of clothing is listed where.

  43. I would have had the same reaction if my hubby had picked that dress too. I don’t like it in the catalog photo at all. On you, ILOVE IT!!!
When my hubby is shopping with me , he’ll pick stuff out and I I’m like this is not my thing but when I try it on, I usually love it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Guess our men know what they’re doing after all. 😊

  44. Yay Joe!!
What a difference it is to see the dress on you rather than the catalog. Looking good!

  45. Love the dress. Your husband done good. Not to sure mine would 😄

  46. I really like the dress, I would totally wear it, very flattering!

  47. I love the dress on you! I would not have picked it either based on the catalog photo, but I love it on you. Very flattering!

  48. Kari Tollefson says:

I wouldn’t have ordered the dress either, but it looks great on you! Good job, Joe!! Sometimes I think clothes look better on a real person than on a model in a catalogue lol

  49. Love it !
Looks better on you than the model

  50. Dress is beautiful and flattering. Thought I’d see if they made it in petite and then saw the price tag☹️

  51. Lillian F Beach says:

This dress looks amazing on you. Great pick, Joe!!!!

  52. Good job Joe!!! The dress is so flattering on you!

  53. Love the dress! Good for Joe!

  54. I would never have picked this dress. It looks amazing on you.

  55. I LOVE this dress on you. It’s beautiful. I may just splurge and order it for myself too. Thank you. Yay Joe

  56. I agree, this dress looks like it was made for you! The fit is really spot on and makes me want to ask my husband to pick out clothes for me. He wishes I’d wear more dresses but I never find any that I’m happy with…also, I’m petite which makes it extra hard to find the correct lengths.

  57. This dress is honestly one of the best outfits I’ve seen you wear.
    You look gorgeous in this!
    Jan

  58. Michelle Hamric says:

Not sure if I would have ordered it from looking at the catalog picture. I think it’s much cuter on YOU than it looks in the catalog. Definitely a winner!! Hubby did good!

  59. Omg! This looks fabulous on you! Love 💕 it!!

  60. That dress looks fabulous on you-so flattering!!

  61. I wasn’t wowed by the dress but tried it on in the store and bought it! It is flattering and the POCKETS!!! Not sure why, but I love pockets in a dress. We have a May wedding and it will be perfect! Now I need new shoes 🙂 I’m a plus size but it’s just as flattering and my husband loved it too!

  62. Isn’t it infuriating when the men in our lives are right? Love that dress on you!

  63. Joe is 2 for 2! Very pretty and flowy dress for you. Always look forward to your posts and Joe’s picks have been a great addition every week!

  64. You look adorable in that dress, great pick Joe! I would have overlooked the catalog picture too, more of a Little House on the Prairie vibe 😁

  65. Marcie W. says:

I think the outfit looks great on you. I would not have chosen this dress based on the way it looked on the model. I am built like a ruler, also, and the fit and flare dresses do look nice on that shape. You did a great job styling this dress. Way to go, Joe!

  66. Joe had really good taste. The dress looks marvelous on you. I did not notice it in the Talbots catalogue.

  67. Joe did a terrific job on both outfits! Have you considered loaning him out?

  68. Wow! He’s a stylist and does not know it!! This looks lovely on you!

  69. Julia Gilbert says:

Great job Joe! Very feminine…I would like to see it with a belt too. Best,

  70. Love the dress! It looks great on you!! Joe did a great job! I’m impressed!!!

  71. Doreen Bednarski says:

Once again, good job Joe!!!! This dress looks great on you. The man knows what he likes on you. I do agree with you though, I wasn’t impressed with the picture in the catalog either, but on you, yes, yes!
I tried your experiment with my husband using a Chadwicks catalog. The only one I had. He also did amazing well. He said out fit was totally me, and the other a dress, he thought was pretty. It was, but sleeveless. I don’t do sleeveless. Apparently he doesn’t see my arms as ugly as I do.
Keep these ideas coming! Such fun.

  72. You should have modelled the dress for their catalog. It looks super on you. My 5’2′ height would not be able to carry this dress; I feel sure it would look like a tent on me.

  73. Love the dress it is very flattering. Good job Joe.

  74. Peggy Bonanno says:

So flattering on you! Love the look. Joe’s right, again.

  75. Yes, cute dress! Thank you for sharing dresses!

  76. I love the dress, great job Joe!

  77. The dress looks beautiful on you!

  78. Such a cute dress but no it would not have caught my eye. Looks fabulous on you!!!

  79. Wow, I’m impressed; that hubby of yours did a great job this week and the dress looks stunning on you! Being a huge fan of black & white, I probably would have chosen that dress from the catalog and it seems that Joe sure has a great eye for what looks good on you. Great job Joe and looking forward to seeing next week’s choice…no pressure 🙂

  80. Beautiful dress. LOVE LOVE

  81. I hope you kept this dress – you look great in it! Way to go Joe!

  82. Absolutely love the dress!!!! I even checked to see if it came in different colors since my complexion doesn’t do black. Sometimes it’s fun to see what someone else would pick for us…I guess it makes us step out of our comfort zone..

  83. Good job Joe!!! That dress looks fantastic on you!! Wish I was 30 yrs younger (I’m 80) and I would order it for myself. Tell Joe I said he has really good taste in clothes!!

  84. This is perfection on you!

  85. Your hubby chose well! That dress fits you perfectly and looks beautiful! Good eye!

  86. I, too, would have flipped the page this dressed appeared on only because I don’t have a need for dresses…I just never wear them. But Joe does apparently know what looks good on women…at least his woman. You look amazing…it is so flattering on you. I loved the colors in the first outfit and I have had my eye on the sweater. The pant, with its design, was not to my taste. But this dress is lovely. I hope you keep doing these posts once in a while…it’s been fun.

  87. Beautiful dress! Joe did a great job selecting both outfits and I think you look fantastic in each!

  88. LOVE the outfit, well done Joe!

  89. Tammy Gravis says:

I wish that pocketbook would come back in stock! Love the dress.

  90. Michelle James says:

Love this dress! You look stunning!

  91. Laura Dennison says:

I LOVE the dress on you!! No, I don’t think I would have picked it out from the catalogue picture either. Joe did great!!

  92. The dress so suits you. Well done Joe.

  93. Karen Miller says:

That dress is adorable! Joe did a great job…on both outfits, in my opinion!

  94. I wouldn’t have picked it out for myself either. But it really looks adorable. It does have features that are flattering. Great choice.

    1. Joe hit this one out of the park! Well done and he has a good model too.

I would have passed this up in catalog also. I have no need for more dresses after retiring

  95. No, this dress wouldn’t have caught me eye. I think that’s why having a fresh eye – ours or someone else’s – can make all the difference sometimes. Polka dots are a good example. They never have appealed to me and one day I tried a polka dot dress on and I liked it. I have a couple pieces that I wear occasionally and they are a nice change.

    1. That dress is adorable on you! So feminine!

  96. Joe did great! The dress makes you look like a size 2, whittles your waist. The length looks great, too. It makes you appear quite tall. I wish it came in different colors, black washes me out!

Way to go, Joe! You have a new career on the horizon!

  97. The dress looks great on you. Joe has picked two outfits that were home runs.

  98. Vicki L Werley says:

I love the dress. Joe has good taste. I am loyal shopper at Talbots. I am petite and I can always find something to buy

  99. Joe did a nice job!! Love the dress

  100. Barbara W. says:

I LOVE the dress!!! My husband would never pick out this dress, and I probably wouldn’t let him – lol

  101. This is even better than the first outfit he chose. Great outfit!!

  102. I love the dress! Looks awesome on you. I want to buy one too! Joe you making some fabulous picks , my man!

    1. The dress is lovely. Joe did well!

    2. Gina Cates says:

Joe did a great job!! This dress looks great on you! I wouldn’t have gave the catalog pic a 2nd glance, and I love black & white!

  103. I think your husband has good taste. After all he picked you….

Honestly I wouldn’t let my husband choose my outfits. If I would, I envision it would be frumpy and old-fashioned. Something I’m not.

    1. Christine F says:

      One word….ADORABLE!

  104. Deanne hope says:

Love the dress and those shoes!!!
