7 Walmart Fall Outfits on a 5’3″ Petite Woman
Stephanie, my daughter-in-law, is back with another Walmart try-on, and this one has some really cute pieces for late summer and fall. She’s 5’3″ and petite, so if you’re on the petite side, her try-ons are especially helpful because you can see where jackets hit, how cropped jeans fall, and how longer dresses look on a smaller frame.
I had her try everything on in the dressing room, and she also recorded a short video with most of the outfits so you can see the clothing from more than one angle and hear what she thought about the fit and feel. I love that part because a product photo only tells you so much. Seeing something on a real woman, walking around and talking about it, gives you a much better idea of what you’re actually ordering.
For this Walmart try-on, she found a little bit of everything: a gingham maxi dress, several cute jackets, wide-leg jeans, a matching casual set, and some sporty pieces that would be great for travel or running errands.
I especially like this group because it gives us a look at several fall trends without going overboard. There are cropped jackets, wider-leg pants, rich brown, Mary Jane flats, and relaxed sporty pieces, but most of them are still easy to work into a real-life wardrobe.
I’ll include Stephanie’s size in every piece, and since she’s 5’3″, you’ll also have a good reference for length and proportion as we go.
A Gingham Maxi Dress That Can Go From Summer Into Fall
This black-and-white gingham dress is one of those pieces that can stretch much farther into the year than you might expect. Gingham usually makes me think of spring and summer, but the black and white color combination changes that completely.
The square neckline is flattering, and the smocked bodice gives the dress some shape before flowing into the tiered skirt. I also like that the puff sleeves have enough structure to be noticeable without becoming enormous. Nobody needs sleeves entering the room five minutes before they do. Lol!
Stephanie wore a small. Maxi dresses can sometimes overwhelm a petite frame, but this one works well on her at 5’3″ because the fitted smocked bodice gives her shape before the skirt falls away from the body.
The black Woven Mary Jane Flats are a cute way to wear this now, especially since Mary Janes are everywhere again. When the weather cools down, I could also see this with a cropped denim jacket and a simple black flat. The flats ran true to size.
A Striped Blazer With Jeans
This is probably one of the easiest outfits in the entire try-on to recreate with pieces you already own. Start with jeans and a simple white top, then add the Striped Single Breasted Blazer.
The narrow green-and-white stripe keeps the blazer from feeling too businesslike, and the gold-tone buttons dress it up a little. Stephanie wore a small, and I like the proportions with the wider-leg jeans. The blazer gives her some definition through the upper body while the jeans stay relaxed through the leg.
The High Rise Cropped Wide Leg Jeans are a size 2. Since Stephanie is 5’3″, the cropped length works especially well on her petite frame. She can wear them with a flat without having a lot of extra denim pooling at the bottom.
If you’ve been curious about wide-leg jeans but aren’t sure how to wear them, this is a good formula to copy: a simple top, a jacket that doesn’t hang too long, and a flat that shows a little of the foot.
The Feminine Jacket That Dresses Up Jeans
If you’re tired of wearing the same basic denim jacket every fall, take a look at this one.
The Parsnip Cropped Ruched Jacket has a high ruffled collar, gathered shoulders, oversized buttons, and a slightly cropped shape. Those details make it feel much more like part of the outfit instead of something you grabbed solely because the restaurant was freezing.
Stephanie wore a small, and I think the length is especially good on her 5’3″ frame. When you’re petite and wearing wide-leg jeans, a jacket that ends around the waist can help keep the outfit from feeling too heavy.
The creamy color is also very versatile. You could wear it with denim, black pants, olive, brown, or even over a fall dress.
Denim and Stripes With a Little More Personality
Now this outfit has some personality.
The Light Haze Wash Cropped Ruched Jacket takes the idea of a denim jacket and makes it much more feminine. The gathered shoulder detail, higher collar, and fuller sleeves give it a completely different look from a traditional trucker jacket.
Stephanie wore the jacket in a medium. I like that slightly roomier fit here because the shape of the jacket already has some volume.
Then there are the Striped High Rise Cropped Barrel Jeans in a size 2. Barrel jeans have been around for several seasons now, and I know some women love them while others look at them and think, “Absolutely not.” 😂
This pair is actually a fairly tame way to try the silhouette. The stripe adds interest, but the leg shape isn’t nearly as exaggerated as some barrel jeans I’ve seen. On Stephanie’s petite frame, the cropped length keeps the shape from overwhelming her.
I wouldn’t consider these a basic you’ll wear three times a week, but if your closet is already full of regular denim and you want something different, they’re fun.
Stephanie didn’t have a video of this outfit; we’ll just have to use our imagination.
A Black Eyelet Top That Can Easily Dress Up
This is exactly the kind of top I like keeping around because it can rescue a pair of jeans when you need to look a little nicer.
The Black V-Neck Eyelet Short Sleeve Top has texture from the eyelet fabric and a slightly fuller sleeve, so it has much more presence than a plain black T-shirt. Stephanie wore a small.
Paired with the same size 2 wide-leg jeans and the Madden NYC Women’s Buckle Heels, the outfit could easily work for dinner, a casual event, or anywhere jeans are appropriate, but you still want to look polished.
This also shows why I don’t think you need an enormous wardrobe. Those same Walmart jeans have already been worn with a blazer, a feminine jacket, and this eyelet top, and every outfit has a completely different feel.
The Rich Brown Matching Set ???
I assume that “molten earth” is brown, but in these photos, the outfit almost looks plum.
Brown is going to continue being a big color as we move into fall, and Walmart calls this shade Molten Earth. That’s a very dramatic name for brown, but I have to admit it sounds better than “mud.”
The Molten Earth Crinkle Jacket and Crinkle Pants with Pleated Knees create a matching set that feels sporty and relaxed. Stephanie wore a small in the jacket and an XS in the pants.
The crinkled fabric is practical because it’s supposed to have texture. That’s always good news if you’re packing for a trip because nobody wants to spend vacation time ironing.
I would wear the pieces together for travel and then split them up later. The jacket could go over jeans or black pants, while the pants could work with a cream sweatshirt, simple tee, or lightweight sweater.
The Avia Neutral 5000 Performance Sneakers keep the whole outfit casual and would make sense if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking.
Sporty Separates for Errands or Travel
This last outfit is for the days when comfort is running the show.
The Avia ScubaKnit Top has a relaxed shape with ruching and a tie at the side that gives you some control over the length. Stephanie wore a medium.
The Sage Sheen FeatherStretch Pants are a small and have that slightly shiny, lightweight athletic fabric we’re seeing everywhere right now. The looser leg makes them feel current, but they’re still easy enough to wear for travel, errands, walking the dog, or sitting through a long day of appointments.
This is another outfit where Stephanie’s height is helpful for comparison. At 5’3″, you can see that the pants have plenty of length on her, so petite readers may want to pay attention to the inseam before ordering.
Paired with the Avia Cream 5000 Performance Sneakers, this is the outfit I’d pick when I knew I’d be on my feet most of the day.
What I Like Most From This Walmart Try-On
There are several good finds here, but I’m most interested in the pieces that can work multiple ways.
The wide-leg jeans are probably the best example because we used them in several completely different outfits. I also think both of the cropped jackets are worth a look if you’re searching for an easy third piece for fall.
For something a little more feminine, the black eyelet top is very wearable, and the gingham maxi dress gives you something you can start wearing now and continue styling as the temperatures cool.
If you’re petite, pay particular attention to Stephanie’s videos because seeing where these pieces actually hit on her 5’3″ frame is much more helpful than relying only on the model height listed on a retailer’s website.
And if comfort is your priority, I’d look hardest at the two outfits at the end. Matching sets and relaxed athletic pieces have become a much bigger part of everyday wardrobes, and I’m perfectly happy about that development.
Which outfit would you wear? I think the jackets are going to get a lot of attention, but that gingham dress may sneak up and steal the show.
