The sweater dress is making a huge comeback this year. Let’s face it, 2023 is the year of everything old is new again! We’ve got corduroy pants, ballet flats, and all things 90s, and now I’m sharing the best sweater dresses for women over 50. Why are they great for women over 50? Because they are great for everyone and we’ve reached the age where we can wear what we want!

One of my favorite silhouettes is the Fit and Flare. This is where the top is fitted and the bottom half flares out. This is a great look for women with a little more in the hip or thigh area. Eliza J is a great brand for dresses. I’ve had several through the years. This would be great for a work function or even a fall wedding.

This is from one of my faves – Diane Von Furstenberg. This is a wool/cashmere blend and available in both camel and black. I’m sure it would look good in either but I LOVE this camel. This is so chic and elegant. It has a hefty price tag but you know it would feel amazing.

Here’s another great fit and flare dress. This one is from CeCe! I like the dark cocoa color but if you want something more festive, it comes in red and green. Either would be great for the holidays. It’s a little shorter but if you’ve got the legs, flaunt them! Of course, you can also wear tights if you want to be a bit more demure. This is on sale so hurry!

Isn’t this gorgeous? Remember when I blogged about quiet luxury? This is a great example. It’s simple and elegant and rendered in a great blend of wool and cashmere. This is unlined so if wool or cashmere bothers you, you’ll want to wear a body slip. In addition to the cream, it also comes in black and dark green.

I’ve decided to call this a Cardigan Sweater dress, lol. All jokes aside, I do really like the olive color and the buttons down the front. This is more casual than some and would look great with booties and a vest. At $89 dollars, it’s one of the lower-priced options from Nordstrom. If you prefer, black is available and looks great with tennis shoes!

Here’s the lovely v-neck sweater vest that I styled above. I love that it can be worn with or without the enclosed belt. This is a very affordable option from Amazon at only $40 dollars. It comes in over 15 different colors and has a 4.5-star rating. I’m wearing a large, which is my normal size. I do like that the dressy is stretchy, so it looks good on my ruler body frame, and it would also look great on someone with more curves.

Amazon calls the A-Line, but it’s also another good example of the fit and flare. Again, you can use the belt, take the belt off, or replace it with a different type. I like white but of course, it comes in multiple colors. Buy it in green, black, or red if you want something special for the holidays.

When I think “sweater dress” this is what I usually think of. I love the cable knit style and the turtle neck. I don’t know how Amazon does it, but this is also just $40 dollars. It’s been reviewed over 1,000 times and has a 4.3 star rating. All of that and delivered right to your door! Win/Win.

And finally, a ribbed long-sleeve sweater dress in a midi length, perfect for fall and winter. Guess what? It’s not $40 dollars. Sorry, but it’s $45 dollars! lol. It comes in over 20 colors, has been reviewed over 3,000 times and has a 4.4 star rating. I think the khaki color is perfection!

I just love Lucy Lu!! We had a little rescue Yorkie we named Rocko Spaghetti “Noodles”, aka “The Yorkie”. I found him one year when he had been dumped in the snow. He was the most intelligent, loving, and sweet little guy ever. He passed in March of 2020, and not a day goes by that we don’t think of him with love. ❤️ Please kiss your baby for me!!
I love your examples of your sweater dresses, especially styled with a beautiful pair of boots. Right now, we are getting ready for a move to the Big Island of Hawaii, so I guess no more sweater dresses will be in my closet..cute boots either!! God bless you, sweet lady!! Thank you for putting together a wonderful blog everyday, they are much anticipated, and appreciated!

The red dress with long top looks wonderful on you! I’m wondering what underthings would be the best to wear under a sweater dress. it seems that bra lines etc. would be visible. thanks for your advice.

    1. Janice, I didn’t notice an issue. Because the sweaters are usually chunky, the underwear doesn’t seem to show.
