Stepping Outside My Fashion Comfort Zone

I made my children promise that they wouldn’t let me turn into a little old lady who was stuck in her ways. One that refused to try new things and would say, “I’ve done it like this for years,” or, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So, stepping outside my fashion comfort zone is a goal for me this year. I’m not stopping with fashion; I intend to try new supplements, makeup, skincare, etc.

If you are a parent or grandparent, then you are familiar with a child who will only eat certain foods and refuses even to try a small taste of something new. They don’t like the “look” of the food, as if that had something to do with how it tastes. Lol! While we will coax, bribe, or threaten them to get them to try new things, how open are we? I won’t have you wearing something that makes you feel uncomfortable; feeling confident in your appearance is always the goal. But I want you to be at least open to trying a new style, print, or color palette that you thought you couldn’t wear.

Trying a new brand

Today, I’m trying a couple of new brands. The point isn’t that I have to love the look; it is that I am willing to “try” them. In this case, I was curious about these brands because they are pretty dang expensive. What makes an item worth paying such a large amount?

Before I give you my review, I want you to realize that everyone has a different price point they are willing to spend on clothing. I try to style clothing from all different price points to give everyone a chance to look and feel fabulous. This outfit is expensive, so I’ll also give a similar option at a much better price.

Pros of the Relaxed Terry Button-Up Shirt

I have some pros and cons for each item. Let’s start off with the pros of the Frank & Eileen Relaxed Terry Button-Up Shirt. I was so excited to try this shirt once it arrived. The fabric is very thick and heavy (think a button-up sweatshirt) and comfortable. I think it will only get softer with washing, and I could see wearing this on repeat with leggings, jeans, etc.

Cons of the Relaxed Terry Button-Up Shirt

Now, for the cons. Obviously, the price is a little much to pay for a shirt or a sweatshirt. Even though the fabric is of great quality, and I love the distressed style, I’m not sure if I would get enough wear to justify the price. Also, I need to send the one I’m wearing back because it swallows me whole. I have it pinned in the back to take the photos, but I need a small one, and that will probably still be oversized.

Good American isn’t a new brand to me, but it is one that I’ve only styled once or twice. I ordered the Always Fits Good Distressed Flare Jeans because I wanted to try this style. It is supposed to have enough stretch to them to fit several different size ranges. I’m wearing a 6-12, and my usual size in jeans is an 8.

Pros of the Always Fits Good Distressed Flare Jeans

The fit is AMAZING! I love the amount of stretch associated with these jeans, but I worried they might expand as the day went on since they covered so many different sizes. So, I wore them for two days in a row, and they still fit like a dream. The color is the perfect shade and can be dressed up or down.

Cons of the Always Fits Good Distressed Flare Jeans

The cons are harder to come by. Price is an obvious issue, and the inseam will be an issue for many of you, especially my petite readers. The inseam on these jeans is 33 1/2″, but I like that length since it works well with heels. They do carry a lot of ankle jeans, which would probably be full-length for petites.

The brand I’m highlighting is one I show and style all the time. This isn’t for me to get out of my fashion comfort zone; it is for YOU. The brand is Amazon, and even though you might get packages from them all week long, some are still skeptical about the quality.

Pros of the Cardigan Knit Button Jacket

So, let’s talk about this khaki Cardigan Knit Button Jacket I’m wearing. Since the price of the other items has been an issue, let’s start with that. The price of this knit jacket is very reasonable, especially for the quality. This jacket is about the same thickness and weight as the button-up shirt, and the quality is fabulous. I’m wearing a medium, and I was able to layer it over the oversized shirt since it has plenty of stretch to it. It is available in many colors, and I’m also going to order the navy since it is a great neutral. This is also versatile since you can wear it as a thick button-up shirt, and the price is under $30!

Cons of the Cardigan Knit Button Jacket

Ummm, 🤷‍♀️ I can’t think of one. I’ve styled other items by this brand (Grace Karin), and the only thing I can think of is that some of the tops ran small. This jacket, however, fits true to size, so I guess that’s not really a con.

Here is a photo that shows the length of the knit jacket and the flare of the jeans. You can’t see the shoes very well; they are by Sam Edelman, a brand I’ve styled a lot over the years. The pointy-toe Leopard Print Flats are on trend and look gorgeous with almost anything. (Remember that leopard print is considered a neutral) However, the sizing is off for me; I ordered an 8 1/2 and a 9, but both are off just a little. The 8 1/2 rubs the back of my heel, and I walk out of the 9. I’m really bummed because these are so cute and would work great this spring.

Finally, I always accessorize my outfits when I leave the house. I rarely sit around with all my jewelry on, but I try not to leave the house without it. Kendra Scott is my go-to for jewelry, and I love the style and quality of the brand. I’m going to try other jewelry brands this year, but the jewelry I have on today is Kendra Scott. I’m wearing the Large Hoop Earrings, Lex Chain Necklace, and Lex Chain Bracelet, my usual everyday items.

The Buckle Strap Suede & Leather Shoulder Bag is a new purchase, and I like it. It is a medium size and can be worn as a crossbody for hands-free shopping. The quality is nice, with a suede body and leather trim. It is also available in black, but I love this brown color.

  1. Really enjoyed the post. When I first read Stepping Out of Comfort Zone I was thinking style wise, surprised to see it was price wise. That got me to thinking! I’ve always spent relatively more on work clothes or special event. I am retired now and special events are rare; so I really need to amp up casual clothes as that is what I wear day in and day out. Thanks for new ideas and cute clothes:)

Your outfits look quite comfortable. Also the jewelry catches my eye.

  3. Received my cardigan knit jacket yesterday and I love it. Ordered the gray blue color and it’s great. Am thinking of getting another but trying to decide on a color.
And while I’m here I’m loving the new Laroche posey cream that I got a few days ago. I love this brand so I was excited to give this a try. Thanks for all your tips.

    1. I’m thrilled you are liking your purchases!!!

  4. I really like the knit jacket and love your blog. I get so many ideas from you thank you

  5. Comfort zone is a hard one to break. Especially since we are so comfortable with our individual styles. But, definitely going to give it a try!

  6. My choice for disaster relief aid is Samaritan’s Purse. They are so quick to respond, and their organization and volunteers are devoted to lend their assistance wherever needed.
I love the flare jeans, but no petites in this style. Continuing my search!

  7. Thank you! I tend to get stuck in a rut with brands that I know fit. This gives me some ideas and confidence!

  8. These outfits look beautiful on you. All the pieces certainly complement each other

  9. Great post! So many options out there to update your look. I’m sure some of your readers get stuck in a rut with fashion(as I do) so it’s nice to know what is available to have an updated wardrobe that still feels true to oneself. Thanks again!

  10. Not stepping out of my comfort zone of skinny or straight leg jeans. Being under 5foot, I feel swallowed up by flares! But keep up the good work of trying to get us out of our comfort zone!

I need to step out of my comfort zone!

  12. Laurie Johnson says:

Sorry—this doesn’t pertain to the blog on this page (love that terry cloth shirt💜) I didn’t know where to contact you regarding how to help out with the California fire situation.

I was just reading about how Samaritan’s Purse plans to go in to help once the fires are put out. They have a great plan and have a stellar record of helping with disasters all over the world. I’m going to contribute to them and thought you might be interested too. They’ll take the love of Jesus with them

  13. Love this cardigan knit jacket! And many thanks for your encouragement to update our wardrobe!!! Look forward to enjoying your collections every day. And thank you for including God.

  14. Yes I’m willing & love the suede shoulder bag.

  15. the Grace Karin sweater jacket is very nice. my daughter is looking for something like that. just sent her the link!

  16. Do the pockets on the Grace Karin cardigan fall open? I love that cardigan on you, but I tend to avoid cardigans with horizontal pockets because they tend to stretch out and fall open.

    1. They haven’t so far.

  17. A great organization that aids in disaster relief is Samaritan’s Purse. They recently showed the love of God after Hurricane Helene and they will be there with servants hands and hearts for those suffering after the devastation in California.

    1. A lot of people are mentioning them.

  18. Hi Tania…..I am trying a no buy challenge (yeah right, I will see how long this will last 😜) Seriously I have so many clothes, shoes, jewelry etc that I have got to “shop my closet” and save money. However you challenge me to try different ensembles that I am sure I have in my closet so I can experiment a little. As far as an organization to donate too, I would highly recommend Samaritan’s Purse. Billy Graham’s son, Franklin is the President and Franklin’s son Will also does so much to keep Billy Graham’s legacy going by sharing God’s love and the gospel all over the world. I live in NC, an hour away from the devastating area that Hurricane Helene affected due to the flooding. There are so many in NC that still need help. Samaritan’s Purse helped a lot in NC. Billy Graham was from Montreat, NC which is close to Asheville. They are a legitimate organization. My heart breaks for those in CA. I have been praying for days for them and will continue too. The situation is so different from NC, however it reminds me of so many in NC who lost “everything” including family members. 😢

  19. I have three close friends that HATE to shop..
(bizarre, I know). Anyway, when they “need” to go, they usually ask for my help and I often go to the store half an hour before we are supposed to meet so that I can pull things and have them in the dressing room when they get there. I always say the same thing, “I don’t want you to buy anything you don’t love, but you have to try everything on”. you are so right about trying to get out of your comfort zone – even if just a little! I absolutely love all of your posts!

    1. What a great friend you a Glenda! Sounds like lots of fun AND support for your friends!

  20. Kellie johnson says:

absolutely. looking forward to more post like this one. Thank you

  21. Ordered the cardigan knit jacket in navy. So cute, love jackets!
Prayers for L.A. I grew up there, so heartbreaking 💔.
Samaritans Purse is a wonderful organization that helps and prays for people. Franklin Graham is CEO.

  22. Susan Lindsay says:

I am loving the jacket from Amazon! I am deciding between black and gray but I love the khaki as well!
Also I am looking to find a nice size tote bag, I am 5’2” so one or to overwhelm me. Any ideas?

    1. You might want to look at a satchel instead of a tote. They aren’t as overwhelming.

  23. I am not sure where to post this comment so ima just sticking it here. In your recent email “Are you stuck in a rut?“ you asked about how you could help. I know Samaritans Pursue does all kinds of disaster relief help. You can give online and specify where you want your donations to go (“most needed”). Hope that info helps.

I love your blog, btw. I’ve only recently found you and I just can’t get enough of it! Thanks and God bless you!

  24. Thanks for sharing the pros and cons. I’m considering the jeans as I’m loving Old Navy flare jeans. I think I’m willing to try “new” things within reason. New foods definitely, new clothes depends on the price.

  25. Deborah Howard says:

I love your posts ! This is my first time to leave a reply. I appreciate all of your options for different styles and the cost of items. I am always looking for ways to be stylish and not spend a lot of money.

  26. Gayle Davis says:

I hope that I can always try to step out of my comfort zone, that’s the way I grow. Not just in clothes, either!

  27. Ginger Hiller says:

I love today’s scripture! The sweater jacket is an awesome find that I’m contemplating buying. I am trying to step out of my comfort zone some, with the brands I add to my closet. I hope you are having a fabulous Friday! It’s cold and raining here.

  28. I love to try new styles and brands! I’ve found that the easiest way to update is with an on-trend pair of jeans, which forces you to play with the tops and accessories you already own to style them. After trying on two pairs of modified barrel jeans, though, I can tell you they’re not for me – just give me all the wide legs!

  29. I need to work on doing a better job of mixing and matching the pieces in my closet. I am so bad about wearing the same “outfit” over and over.

  30. Good points about getting outside your comfort zone. When it comes to fashion I will try new brands if they’re in my budget. That’s why I tried Quince last year.

  31. Linda Hayes says:

Charity Navigator is posting a list of the best organizations to donate to help the fire victims, pets, firefighters etc.
hopefully everyone will pull together to help those in great need! Much peace!
    Linda

  32. Gay Craig says:

Absolutely LOVE the Relaxed Terry Button up shirt, but unfortunately, this retired Art teacher can’t afford it. Thank you for the other options. I was going to order the Grace Karin Jardigan but the Royal blue is out of stock, so maybe the navy will work. I like trying new things, even if sometimes my daughter rolls her eyes! 😂

  33. Yes,, I agree with you,Tania. Let’s try new things. If you don’t try it, you might miss your new favorite.

  34. Prayers for all those affected by those horrible fires in California. Samaritan’s purse is often on the ground before FEMA ever gets there. A great organization. Thanks for the less expensive options in today’s post. So thankful you do all price points. Some blogs I have stopped reading because the prices are just unreasonably high for the difference in quality these days. Going to order that sweater/jacket from Amazon. Will be good for a southern trip I’ll be gong on mid March.

  35. Dottie Kinnaman says:

Though expensive the white shirt looks awesome on you! I love the Amazon sweater jacket and will definitely be looking twice. Understand about stepping out of your comfort zone. I’m 72 and am very cognizant of what I wear, not wanting the old, frumpy look but at the same time don’t want to “look like I’ve aged out” of an outfit! 🤣🤣🤣 I’m prone to stay with classics, especially pearls and animal print (shoes particularly). Loved this post.

  36. Love the pros and cons! I love the leopard print shoes, hate when that happens with sizing. Do better manufacturers!!

  37. I love your thoughts on stepping out of our comfort zone. I have started ordering more clothes on Amazon and am finding brands that I like. If I don’t spend too much, I’m more willing to try something out of my “comfort zone”.

  38. There are many organizations that you can donate to. Red Cross, Salvation Army, Bstrong, to name just a few. I have relatives affected by these fires and it really is horrific. Sending lots of prayers to all affected.

  39. Jenniffer Groski says:

Fashion ruts are no fun! Love the fresh ideas!

  40. Roberta Schwandner says:

    I like the white shirt.

Love the first outfit you look fabulous in it. It is out of my price point comfort zone for the top.

  43. I’ve tried a few Grace Karin pieces from Amazon also. Have so been great quality and style at affordable prices.
how to help CA fire victims
Good Morning America had a great story yesterday about organizations that are helping CA fire victims and first responders. For those of us who don’t live near, these are great organizations that we can support with our gifts and help with food, lodging, water, etc.
Most of all, support then with prayer!

  44. Sabrina Morris says:

Thank you for sharing your faith as well! I love your cross necklace! Could you please share the link?

  45. Judy Whitmore says:

Please show us more silver jewelry. I am a winter and no longer buy gold jewelry, I do wear the gold pieces I already own.

    1. I tend to forget to style silver, and lean more toward gold.

  46. Thank you for showing both expensive and reasonable items. I sort of like the look of the F and E clothing but they look like lounge wear and all seem to be oversized – hence your sizing problem I guess. I don’t understand their over pricing at all. When I followed the link to qvc skincare, it was for various items not skin care- but maybe I didn’t understand what to look for. My skin needs lots of help.

  47. Stella Gustafson says:

Clothes are expensive. Thank you sharing a more affordable version

  48. Jan Canapp says:

I love the Grace Karin sweater jacket. I thought the pink color would be a nice addition to my Spring wardrobe. However, when I went to order I noticed the medium was priced at $25 yet the small, which was the size I needed, was $45. Just wondering why the $20 price increase for a smaller size? Frustrating.

    1. Jan, I’ve noticed a difference in price between colors and sizes. I assume the issue is maybe some colors are on sale, and others aren’t. I’m not sure why there would be a different price between sizes unless it is an inventory issue, and they are discounting a size to deplete their inventory.

  49. I just ordered the tarte Shape Tape & Lift. Looking forward to giving it a try.

  50. Hi Tania!
Watch the news. There’s alot of ways to help California as well as NC. Many people struggling. Just unfathomable.
    Red Cross. Fema.

  51. Hi Tania,
Samaritan’s Purse is always in a disaster area bring all kinds of help and comfort. They are a Christian organization headed up by Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham.

  52. Great reminder to step outside our comfort zone to keep things fresh!

  53. Karen Daniel says:

Those jeans look amazing. I think it’s good to step out of your comfort zone.

  54. Prayers for the people and animals affected by these horrible fires. I saw on TV this morning that the Red Cross is asking for help.

  55. Thanks for the post Glad you shared the pro/con.

  56. Kathy Laweryson says:

Good on ya for being determined to not let yourself get in a rut! It’s so easy to stay comfortable in our old ways but I do agree it’s healthy to challenge ourselves with new ways of doing things, be it fashion, technology, exercise, nutrition – anything that gets those brain cells active.
