It is another beautiful day here in Juneau, Alaska and we made the most of it. We trekked to a Glacier and went on a whale watching excursion that was incredible. We started off in this field of Lupine. I tried to grow Lupine years ago in Virginia but it didn’t work out so well for me. The environment is perfect for it here and it will grow wild. You will see fields of these flowers along the side of the highway.
I have heard of stopping and smelling the roses so I tried doing that with the Lupine. You in case you were wondering, roses smell much better. Lol! Joe and Ashleigh made fun of me for wearing my Hunter boots today. They had to eat their words when we got to the glacier. I even had people stop me and try to buy them off of my feet. Hahaha!
That is Mendenhall Glacier that you see in the background. It is funny to see snow and ice in the background while you are wearing short sleeves. The walk to the Glacier is about a mile or a mile and a half but it is well worth the walk. You do have to watch out for bears because they do come down to the trails but we didn’t see any. My top I had on was sleeveless so I wore a short sleeve white cardigan for a little extra warmth. This was a Joan Rivers long cardigan that I bought at the overstock outlet in town. I have a funny feeling that it is not going to be going back home with me. Ashleigh seems to have taken a liking to it. Lol!
This is Nugget Falls. The noise there was so loud you could hardly talk to each other. You see how my hair was flying up, that was because of the wind and spray off of the falls. It was really cool in that spot, as in wet. Lol! We were hot after the walk over so the spray felt pretty good at that time. It didn’t take long before I was ready to move though. This cute little top is by Umgee and I bought it last year. Here is the last time I wore it which was in April of 2016. It looks completely different this time but it could be the scenery in the background distracting your attention.
You can see the Glacier and the Falls in this picture. You can’t see in this picture but there are all kinds of floating little icebergs in the water behind us. The water was very, very cold but there were kids playing in the water.
To get to the falls you had to go through the water. They had a little rock bridge laid so that you could walk across without getting wet. There was a long line of people trying to cross and you had to wait until everyone was across before you could start walking. The line coming to the falls was sooooo long. Since I had my Hunters on I just waded through the water and didn’t have to wait. That would be when I started getting offers to buy my boots. Lol!
This is a pretty rare sight. The crew on the whale watching boat was freaking out that we got to see this. The naturalist that was in charge of telling us about the wildlife on the tour said he had worked on this boat for three years and this was the first time ever getting to see this. It is called Bubble Netting. The Humpback whales here all came together and were working together to feed. Each whale has its job in this process and then they all come together at the end to catch the fish. There were 8 or 10 whales in this gam and they did this process over and over and over. They even put a microphone in the water to listen to the noise they make. At the very end of the process, right before they surface, you hear what sounds like a scream. That is when you knew they were fixing to surface so you would start scanning the surface looking for them. These are Orca Whales. According to the tour guides, this was another rare sighting with only about 10% of the tours getting to see them. The tall fin is from the male and the shorter one is a female. There was also a small baby that was traveling with them.
I love this picture that Ashleigh took. You can see at least two of the whales flukes in the photo. This was truly a wonderful experience.
I hope you are enjoying the pictures from Alaska. It is an adventure that I would recommend to everyone.

Oh my goodness what a glorious day you’ve had! And me too while looking at your beautiful photos! Thanks SO much for sharing your trip with us! How funny that people were offering to buy your boots! I don’t have any so maybe need to by some! Nice that you give your clothes to your daughter & she likes the same things! Have a blast~!
Tania, I’m tellin’ you, those photos are so incredible, I’m speechless!!! From the snow-covered mountains that are always in the background to the whale feeding frenzy…. are you sure you want to go back to Virginia? Remember, they have no lupines there! ha ha A good substitute for lupines is Baptisia. It resembles lupines and can take the heat and humidity of the south. Baptisia comes in white, yellow and blue – yes, blue! I grew it once, but didn’t site it correctly in the garden, so it didn’t do so well, but if you give it fertile, loose soil (not hard clay) and probably some afternoon shade, it should grow fine. On another note, who does Ashleigh look like? I can’t figure her out. ha
