If you live in a milder climate without sweltering summer weather, consider yourself lucky! The official arrival of summer often brings extreme temperatures and a spike in humidity. This leads to boob sweat, thigh chafing, mosquito bites, and other unpleasantries… especially if you are already experiencing hot flashes. Hot weather doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable, especially if you follow some simple fashion tips for dressing in warm weather. Today’s post is full of ideas that will help you stay cool and comfortable on the hottest of days.

Simple Fashion Tips for Dressing in Warm Weather

#1 Choose your colors wisely.

It’s no secret that lighter colors help you stay cool by reflecting a significant amount of sunlight and heat. Darker colors like black and navy can make you feel hotter and more uncomfortable, especially in sunny or warm environments. Dark-colored clothing also tends to have lower breathability, inhibiting airflow and potentially trapping heat close to your skin, further contributing to the sensation of being hotter. If you are attempting to stay cool, reach for pale colors like white, tan, pale pink, or light blue.

Nothing is worse than giant sweat marks on your clothing when attending an outdoor summer event. If you are a heavy sweater and searching for ways to hide signs of perspiration on your clothing, research shows that the best colors for concealing sweat are white, black, and navy. While black or navy may not be the best option for keeping you cool, it may be the best solution to prevent an embarrassing fashion situation.

#2 Think about what you’re wearing under your clothing.

Opting for underwear made from breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials can help absorb and evaporate sweat, keeping you drier and more comfortable throughout the day. Additionally, wearing undergarments that fit well and are not too tight can promote better airflow and prevent excessive heat buildup in sensitive areas. Did you know that they even make cooling shapewear these days? Sign me up! Anti-chafing shorts and products like the Thigh Rescue Anti-Friction Stick can help prevent any uncomfortable rubbing or chafing, even on the sweatiest days.

#3 Wear loose and flowy clothing pieces.

Form-fitting tops, dresses, and jeans trap sweat and prevent airflow from getting to your skin, making you feel even hotter, sweatier, and more miserable! I prefer flowy blouses and sundresses that allow my skin to breathe. This is one of the most important Simple Fashion Tips for Dressing in Warm Weather.

Here are some examples of what I wear to keep me cool and comfortable in the summer.

#4 Consider wearing lightweight fabrics.

Avoid thick, hot material options like polyester and nylon at all costs. I recommend using cool, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, rayon, and jersey. The fibers that these materials are made from allow air to circulate, keeping the body cool and preventing overheating. I also like shopping for fabrics with moisture-wicking properties, which can help to absorb perspiration to keep your skin dry and reduce the risk of irritation.

Here are some of my favorite outfits made with lightweight fabrics that are perfect for warm weather.

#5 Wear Open Toe Shoes.

Just like your skin needs to breathe, so do your feet! A hot summer day is not the time to try out a new pair of loafers or ballet flats with little airflow or ventilation. Instead, slip on some strappy sandals or comfortable slide sandals to keep your feet cool and happy. I share a lot about shoes here, but I’m sharing some of my recent favorite open toe options below.

Totally agree with your advice here, especially open toe shoes. If my feet can’t breathe, I feel like I’m suffocating lol. Have a great trip; sounds like fun!

  4. Family time is much more important than this blog. Put your family and fun first. Relax and enjoy your time with them. You will never regret the time you spend with them, but you will regret the time you put them second. Believe me, this is from experience. I now put my family before my job, hobby, etc. Have fun, relax and be present with them, not on phone or computer!

  5. Thamx for the information on the undergarments. Love the maxi dress. Have fun with your family.

I can’t tell you how much I love my European square neck linen jumpsuit I purchase because I love how it looked on you Tania!! I can dress it up or give it a very casual vibe. Such a great purchase! Thanks so much for recommending this item.

Yes to all your suggestions. Light, floaty dresses are my 1st choice on super hot days. My non-fashion tricks for staying cool are Secret Clinical Strength deodorant (never fails), talcum powder, a fan in my purse (my husband brought one back from Japan for me years ago) and always a giant insulated water mug filled with ice (rubbing a cube on my wrists always cools me off besides drinking the ice water, of course). I envy your family getaway on a houseboat. I think you should relax and do nothing but have fun. Resume your blog work next week – we’ll be here.
