Petite Walmart Try-On for Memorial Day and Summer
Memorial Day is here, and for many of us, it marks the unofficial start of summer. The cookouts, family visits, graduations, vacations, and warm-weather outings start filling the calendar, and suddenly we need a few outfits that are easy, comfortable, and cute without requiring a full production.
Today’s post is a little different because Stephanie is back with a petite Walmart try-on. She is 5’3″, so she is technically petite, and I know a lot of you have asked for more petite-friendly outfits that do not look too young, too trendy, or too fussy. Walmart has had some really cute pieces lately, and this try-on has a nice mix of casual tops, easy dresses, denim, and summer accessories.
These outfits work beautifully for Memorial Day, but they are not one-day-only outfits. That is what I like best about them. You can wear these pieces for cookouts, lunches, errands, vacation dinners, and those summer days when you want to look like you made an effort, but not like you had to call in reinforcements. I already have family in, so reinforcements are currently unavailable. Lol!
Also, since today is Memorial Day, I do want to pause and acknowledge the reason for the day. While many of us enjoy the time with family, the food, and yes, the sales, Memorial Day is first about honoring the men and women who gave their lives serving our country. I am thankful for their sacrifice and for the families who carry that loss.

A Bright Smocked Peplum Top With Cropped Wide Leg Jeans
This bright smocked peplum top is such a fun choice for summer, and the color immediately makes the outfit feel cheerful. The smocking gives the top some shape without making it feel tight, and the little peplum hem is nice because it skims away from the midsection. That is always helpful, especially when we want a top that gives us shape but does not cling to every little thing we ate for lunch. Lol!
On Stephanie’s petite frame, the length works well because it hits at a flattering spot with the Cropped Wide Leg Jeans. A lot of tops can overwhelm a petite body if they are too long or boxy, but this one gives her waist definition and keeps the outfit looking balanced. The sleeveless style is great for warmer weather, and the higher neckline keeps it polished enough for casual gatherings, lunch out, or Memorial Day weekend plans.
The cropped wide-leg jeans are a good summer denim option because they give you the look of jeans without feeling quite as heavy as a full-length pair. The lighter wash keeps the outfit casual and fresh, and the wider leg gives it a modern look without going overboard. If you are petite, cropped wide-leg jeans can be tricky, but this pair works because they still show the foot and ankle area, which helps keep the outfit from looking heavy.
The Barely There Thong Sandals finish the outfit without competing with the bright top. They are simple, easy, and the kind of sandal you can wear with jeans, shorts, skirts, and dresses all summer long.
A Sweet Embroidered Cardigan That Feels Fresh for Summer
This Embroidered Cardigan Sweater is one of those pieces that looks simple at first glance, but the floral embroidery makes it feel special. The ivory color keeps it soft and easy to style, while the colorful flowers add just enough personality. It is feminine without looking too precious, and that is a fine line, gurls.
The puff sleeves are a nice detail because they give the cardigan a little shape at the shoulders. That can be especially flattering on petites because it helps balance the upper body without adding bulk. The short sleeves also make it much more practical for spring and summer than a heavier cardigan.
Stephanie styled it with jeans, which keeps the whole outfit casual and wearable. This would be cute for a Memorial Day lunch, a casual church outfit, a baby shower, or even a travel day when you want to look put together but still feel comfortable. I also like that it can be buttoned and worn as a top, which gives you more ways to wear it. We love a multitasker, especially one that does not ask us what is for dinner.
For women who do not love showing their arms, this is also a nice option because it gives a little coverage without feeling hot or heavy. The embroidery gives it a summer feel, so it does not read like a fall cardigan trying to sneak into May.
A Playful Lobster Sweater With an Embroidered Midi Skirt
This outfit is playful, coastal, and very cute for summer. The lobster sweater has that classic navy-and-orange color combination that always feels a little nautical without being too theme-party-ish. The short sleeves keep it warm-weather friendly, and the cotton knit gives it a more polished look than a regular graphic tee.
I know a lobster sweater may not be the first thing everyone grabs, but it is fun. Sometimes we need a piece that makes people smile. Joe would probably look at this and ask where the butter is, but that is beside the point. It has personality, and it is still easy to wear.
The Embroidered Cotton Midi Skirt is darling with it. The black-and-white gingham already feels summery, but the little embroidered details make it even more special. Since the skirt has fullness, pairing it with a shorter sweater keeps the proportions right on Stephanie. This is important for petites because a long top with a full skirt can swallow you whole faster than Lucy can spot a crumb on the floor.
The skirt length is also nice because it gives coverage without feeling matronly. Midi skirts can sometimes look overwhelming on petite women, but this one works because the waist is defined and the outfit has structure on top. The sweater hits at a good spot, so the skirt still looks intentional instead of bulky.
This would be cute for a summer picnic, Memorial Day weekend plans, a casual dinner at the beach, or any day when you want to look festive without wearing a flag from head to toe.
A Denim Midi Dress With a Bright Cardigan Accent
This sleeveless embroidered denim midi dress is such an easy summer dress. Denim dresses are one of those things that come back around every few years, but this one feels current because of the midi length, the gathered detail, and the subtle embroidery. It gives you the casual feel of denim but in a softer, more feminine shape.
The V-neckline is flattering because it opens up the neckline and keeps the dress from looking too covered up. On a petite frame, that little bit of openness can make a big difference. The dress also has a relaxed shape through the body, so it is comfortable without looking shapeless.
Stephanie added the bright cardigan sweater over her shoulders, and that little pop of color makes the outfit. It gives the denim dress a playful Memorial Day feel without being too obvious. This is also a great styling trick if you want a little arm coverage available, but do not actually want to wear a sweater all day. Just drape it over your shoulders, and you instantly look like you planned your outfit three days ago instead of five minutes before leaving the house.
The dress would be great for cookouts, casual parties, sightseeing, vacation dinners, or even running around town when you want to look cute but stay comfortable. Add sandals as Stephanie did here, or wear them with white sneakers for a more casual daytime look.
A Chambray Maxi Dress With a Skinny Scarf and Straw Tote
This chambray maxi dress is such a pretty summer option, especially for petites who want a longer dress that does not feel too dressy. The light blue color is soft and easy to wear, and the cotton fabric gives it that casual summer feel. It looks breezy without looking sloppy, which is always the goal.
The shape is relaxed but still feminine, and the gathered waist detail gives the dress movement. A lot of maxi dresses can be tricky on petite women because they can look too long or too much fabric, but this one works well on Stephanie because the color is light, the fabric is soft, and the neckline keeps the top half clean and simple.
The Skinny Scarf Wrap adds such a cute finishing touch. I love that it gives the outfit a little personality without adding weight or bulk. Scarves are having a moment again, and this is one of the easiest ways to wear one. Tied at the neck, it makes a simple dress look more styled without having to add a necklace or statement earrings.
The Beach Icons Jute Tote Bag is also a fun summer accessory. The straw texture is perfect for warm weather, and the cherry details give it a playful touch. It is roomy enough for errands, a beach trip, or a day out shopping, but it still looks cute enough to carry with a dress. That is the kind of bag I like, one that actually holds things. Tiny purses are cute until you need your sunglasses, wallet, lip gloss, tissues, and one emergency snack.
This outfit would be adorable for a beach vacation, brunch, a casual Memorial Day gathering, or any day when you want to feel like summer has officially arrived.
Petite Styling Tips From This Walmart Try-On
One thing Stephanie does really well in this try-on is balance proportions. Petite dressing does not mean you can only wear short dresses or skinny jeans. It simply means paying attention to where pieces hit on the body.
The peplum top works because it defines the waist and pairs nicely with cropped jeans. The lobster sweater works because it is shorter and does not cover too much of the gingham skirt. The denim dress and chambray maxi both work because they have enough structure and movement to keep them from overwhelming her frame.
For petites, shoes matter too. A simple sandal that shows more of the foot can help lengthen the leg line, especially with cropped jeans or midi dresses. You do not always need a heel, but you do want to avoid chopping the leg up too much if you are trying to look taller.
Accessories can also help. The bright cardigan, skinny scarf, and straw tote all add personality without overpowering Stephanie’s frame. That is a good reminder for all of us. Accessories should finish the outfit, not look like they are trying to run the meeting.
What to Wear for Memorial Day Without Looking Too Theme-y
Memorial Day outfits do not have to be covered in stars and stripes to feel festive. You can pull in red, white, and blue in softer ways, and this try-on does that beautifully.
The bright red-orange top feels festive with jeans. The navy lobster sweater brings in a coastal summer look. The denim dress with the bright cardigan adds a fun pop of color. The chambray maxi with the scarf and straw tote feels patriotic without being literal.
That is often the easiest way to dress for summer holidays. Choose one or two colors that nod to the occasion, then keep the rest of the outfit simple. You will look seasonal without feeling like you are wearing a costume.
One Last Thing
This petite Walmart try-on has a little bit of everything for Memorial Day weekend and summer. There are casual jeans, cute tops, playful sweaters, easy dresses, and accessories that make the outfits feel finished without making them fussy.
I love seeing Stephanie style these pieces because petite outfits can be hard to judge online. Something that looks simple on the hanger can either be adorable or look like it belongs to your taller cousin. Seeing the pieces on a 5’3″ frame makes it easier to decide what might work in real life.
Now I want to know, which look would you wear first? Are you team bright peplum top, lobster sweater, denim dress, or chambray maxi?
