Faith Over Fear: Finding Peace in Life’s Storms
Fear Is Universal
The Bible is full of commandments, and if I’m being honest, I’ve broken most of them at some point. But there’s one commandment that I find especially challenging to follow. It’s not one of the “Top Ten,” but it’s repeated over and over throughout Scripture:
“Do not fear.”
When you search for this phrase in the Bible, you’ll find it in various forms: Fear not. Do not be afraid. Do not fear. No matter how it’s worded, the message is clear—and yet it’s not always easy to follow.
The truth is, the world can be a scary place. From everyday worries to life’s unexpected storms, fear has a way of creeping into our hearts. But God didn’t tell us not to fear because He doesn’t understand; He told us not to fear because He knows we need His help to overcome it.
Faith Between You and Fear
One Sunday, my preacher said something that struck me deeply:
“We need to put faith between us and fear.”
Think about that for a moment. When we let faith stand between us and whatever we’re afraid of, it changes our perspective. Faith reminds us that God is in control and that He is bigger than whatever we’re facing.
I started to picture this in my mind: the Lord standing between me and my fear, shielding me, protecting me, and reminding me that nothing is beyond His power. When you think about it that way, what is there to fear?
When the Storms of Life Hit
A few years ago, I had a moment where fear nearly got the better of me. Joe and I were flying to Tennessee, and the flight was rough. Turbulence isn’t something I handle well on the best of days, but flying through the mountains with strong winds made it downright terrifying.
As the plane bounced and rocked, I felt my anxiety rise. That’s when I started envisioning the Lord between me and my fear. It helped calm me, but I was still on edge. Then I remembered the story of the disciples caught in a storm:
Mark 4:39 (NKJV):
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
I began repeating those words in my mind: Peace, be still. Over and over, I prayed for calm—both in the skies and in my heart. And then something incredible happened. The winds began to die down. Within minutes, the turbulence stopped, and the rest of the flight was smooth.
Some might chalk that up to coincidence, but I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe in a God who hears us, who cares about even the smallest details of our lives, and who intervenes on our behalf.
Choosing Faith Over Fear
The truth is, the world will always have its storms, and fear will always try to find its way into our hearts. But we have a choice. We can let fear take over, or we can let faith stand in the gap.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV):
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”
God doesn’t want us to live in fear. He wants us to trust Him, to let His peace fill our hearts, and to remember that He is always in control.
So the next time fear starts to creep in, remember this:
- Put faith between you and your fear.
- Call on the Lord, and let His presence calm your heart.
- Speak the words of Jesus: Peace, be still.
The storms may not always calm instantly, but the peace of God will guard your heart in the midst of them.
To GOD Goes The Glory
Have A Blessed Day
Let’s End With a Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us not to fear and for being with us in every storm we face. Lord, help us to put our faith in You when fear tries to take over. Stand between us and the things that make us anxious, and speak peace over our hearts. Teach us to trust You more, to rely on Your power, and to find comfort in Your presence. We ask for Your protection, guidance, and peace as we navigate life’s challenges. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This is exactly what I need to hear! Thank you!
Such great words of wisdom. There’s nothing better than a woman’s prayers!! When we have entered uncertain times in our lives and then come out of them for the better, my husband will say- you were really praying about this one, huh? God listens to his children and loves them.
I certainly needed to be reminded whose in control.
I have let my fears over take me these last couple of years and God used you today to tell me that he is with me always! Peace Be still!
