Before I show you nine of the best Fair Isle sweaters I’ve found for you, I thought I’d give you some fashion information. After all, you may be like me and wondering what exactly makes a sweater a “Fair Isle sweater.” According to my research, which is just two minutes on Google, “Fair Isle is a traditional knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors. It is named after Fair Isle, one of the Shetland Islands. Fair Isle knitting gained considerable popularity when the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) wore Fair Isle jumpers in public in 1921.”

Some of these don’t use a lot of colors, but don’t worry. They still count!

The Best Fair Isle Sweaters – From Talbots

All I can say is…YES, please! I LOVE the colors in this sweater. I recently did a try-on session (it’ll be on the blog soon), and this sweater was soft, thick, and cozy. It looks great with jeans, and I also added this ombre puffer vest to the look.

I’ve never worn a Fair Isle Cardigan before. I have several Fair Isle sweaters from Talbots, and I love their quality, fit, and style.

This sweater is adorable but not what I would normally consider a Fair Isle sweater to look like. I have this sweater, and I can’t believe I haven’t taken a photo of it yet for the blog. It is super cute and fits true to size.

The Best Fair Isle Sweaters – From The Gap

This is a great classic Fair Isle sweater. The blue hues are very pleasing, and the white and black accents mean you could wear this with a wide variety of pants. I like how it looks with the white jeans shown here, but this would look great with a pair of jeans and some black boots. It comes in a very pretty white and a great taupe color as well.

When I think of Fair Isle sweaters, I usually imagine a crew neck sweater like the first one posted. Why? I have no idea! Look how great the pattern looks on this cardigan. This looks so cozy to me. I like the relaxed look of a wrap cardigan, but if you prefer something more fitted, size down one size.

Of course, Fair Isle patterns work well for sweater dresses, too. In addition to the brown, this dress also comes in blue. I’d wear this with tights and tall boots. Unlike most sweater dresses, this isn’t form-fitting. If you’re looking for something more fitted, order a size down.

The Best Fair Isle Sweaters – From Amazon

Isn’t this cute?! I love unique clothing items, and this is different than almost every sweater I have in my closet. I love the bright print. It looks great paired with jeans, and I could wear so many different tops or turtlenecks underneath. If you want more earthy tones, it also comes in an olive and cream variety.

This is a 100% Merino wool sweater from Pendleton. They know a thing or two about sweaters! This pattern is a bit different than most. It almost has a southwestern feel to it. I like the cream, but it also comes in a really cute black version that shows off the neck button detailing.

This Amazon Essentials sweater is so soft and comfy and comes in several different cute patterns. I’ve been a huge fan of FairIsle sweaters for years, and I love the shades of blue in this one. A FairIsle print is a classic print that screams Fall Is Here! I’m wearing a medium, and it fits me great.

The Best Fair Isle Sweaters – From Macy’s

Ooooh, I love these colors! Navy and pink have always been a favorite combination of mine and this works beautifully. Love the touch of yellow, too! This sweater is available in four variations. The other three are very pretty, if a bit muted, but for me, I’m going with this one!

Wouldn’t this be cute at a Christmas party? While most of the partygoers are dressed in red, you’ll stand out in the best possible way in the white Fair Isle sweater. It just looks merry and bright! Of course, it’s also available in bright red and a more traditional green if you prefer. All are cute!

This is not as traditional as most Fair Isle sweaters, but if you don’t tell the Prince of Wales, I won’t! The length of this turtleneck sweater is a bit longer, which I like. The tan and white color combination is a classic that will work well for the holidays, but it’s also available in a very chic black and wine.

What do you think about the Fair Isle look? One thing is for sure. It’s been here for years, and I don’t think it’s going away anytime soon.

While I’ve not been a fan of fair isle sweaters in the past, I’m thinking about trying one in a cardigan style since it would be more versatile. And I could shed it if I get too hot, as long as I have on a top underneath it.

  14. Talbots has a mystery Flash sale this morning, only until noon. 40% off entire purchase. Great timing!

  25. Great sweaters, ideas again! I just finished getting out my winter/cold weather sweaters. Have 2 stacks of white, ivory, 2 stacks of black and shades of charcoal, and 3 sweaters not black or white, so need some color added to my wardrobe. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a blessed week.

  27. I never knew this style had a name! 😄 The purple is so sweet, and I also love the mockneck and crewneck from Macy’s. I don’t own too many sweaters since it doesn’t stay cold here much, but they’re saying we may have a colder, longer winter – might need to think about ordering. 😬
