The Necklace Gap: How to Choose the Right Length for Your Neckline

Knowing which necklace goes with which neckline is one of those things that sounds like it should be obvious, but really is not. There are so many lengths, so many styles, and nobody ever sits you down and explains how they all work together. So you end up grabbing whatever necklace is on the counter and hoping for the best.

Jewelry is having such a major moment in 2026, and if you have not seen my post on the biggest jewelry trends for 2026 you are going to want to check that out. With so many new styles to play with, knowing exactly how to wear them with your necklines is more helpful than ever. Consider this your guide!

The Different Necklace Lengths and What They Actually Mean

When you shop for necklaces, you will usually see them described by length in inches. Here is a quick way to think about where each length actually sits on your body so you can picture it.

14 to 16 inches sits right at your collarbone. This is what most people call a choker.

17 to 19 inches sit just below your collarbone. This is the most common length you will find in stores and what most necklaces default to.

20 to 24 inches falls between your collarbone and your chest. This is a great length for higher necklines.

28 inches or longer hang below your chest. This is what people mean when they talk about a long necklace or a statement necklace.

Now, let’s look at which length works best with each neckline.

V-Neck: Follow the Shape

You gurls know how much I love a V-neck. I wrote a whole post on the V-neck advantage because it really is that good.

For a V-neck, you want your necklace to end right around the same spot where the V ends. So if the V dips a little, go a little longer. If the V is shallow, a shorter necklace works just fine.

A pendant necklace is perfect here because it follows the shape of the V naturally. What I would skip is a very short necklace with a deep V. There ends up being too big a gap between the two, and it looks a little disconnected.

Crew Neck: Go Longer

A crew neck sits high on the neck, which means a short necklace is just going to get swallowed up by the fabric. You will barely see it.

This is where a longer necklace really comes into its own. Something in that 20 to 24 inch range sits nicely on top of the fabric and gives your outfit a focal point. It takes a plain crew neck top from basic to put together in about ten seconds.

A statement necklace works really well here, too. So does layering a couple of lengths together. I have a whole post on how to layer necklaces without the tangles and frustration if you want to try that look!

Scoop Neck: Pretty Much Anything Goes

The scoop neck is one of the easiest necklines to accessorize because it is so open and relaxed. You have a lot of room to work with here.

A necklace in that 17 to 19 inch range sits right in the open space of the scoop and looks like it belongs there. It is an easy, no-fuss choice that works almost every time.

If the scoop is deeper, go a little longer. If it is more of a shallow scoop, you can even try a shorter necklace close to the collarbone. Just make sure there is a little visible space between the necklace and the fabric so they are not sitting right on top of each other.

Boat Neck: Keep It Simple and Delicate

The boat neck already has a lot going on with that wide horizontal line across the collarbone. So the necklace you choose should complement it, not compete with it.

A simple, delicate necklace sitting just below the neckline is always a good call here. Nothing too chunky or too bold. You want the neckline and the necklace to feel like they belong together rather than fighting for attention.

A longer necklace also works well because it creates a vertical line going down, which nicely balances out all that horizontal width across the top.

Square Neck: You Do Not Always Need a Necklace

The square neck is such a strong, defined shape on its own that sometimes no necklace is the right answer. The neckline itself is doing all the work, and that is perfectly fine.

When you do want to add a necklace, keep it simple and delicate. A small pendant sitting just below the square opening looks intentional without cluttering the clean lines of the neckline.

A big, bold necklace fighting with a square neckline is too much happening in one spot. Keep it light and let the neckline shine.

Turtleneck: Long Necklace or Skip It Altogether

A turtleneck does not leave much room for a necklace, so short ones really do not work here. They either disappear under the fabric or sit awkwardly on top of it.

A long necklace worn over the turtleneck is a great look, though. It adds interest, breaks up all that fabric around the neck, and keeps things from feeling too heavy.

Honestly, a turtleneck is also the perfect excuse to skip the necklace entirely and let your earrings do all the talking. A pair of hoops or drop earrings with a turtleneck is always a winner in my book.

What If the Length Is Wrong? Get a Necklace Extender

Gurls, this is one of those tips that sounds so simple but makes such a big difference. If you have a necklace you love, but it is sitting in the wrong spot for your neckline, do not give up on it. Just get a necklace extender.

Necklace Extender

An extender is a small chain you attach to the clasp of your necklace to make it a little longer. They usually come in 2, 4, and 6-inch lengths, and they are incredibly inexpensive. I actually ordered a set not too long ago, and I use them all the time now.

Does Necklace Style Matter Too, Not Just the Length?

It really does, and I am glad you asked! Length gets you most of the way there, but the style of the necklace matters too.

A delicate chain always works when you are not sure. It is the little black dress of necklaces. It goes with almost every neckline and never feels like too much.

A pendant adds direction and gives the eye somewhere to land, which is why it works so well with V-necks and scoop necks. The pendant follows the shape of the neckline, and everything feels intentional.

A chunky or statement necklace is wonderful, but it needs space to breathe. It works best with simpler, more open necklines like a crew neck or a scoop, where it can really shine without competing with the fabric.

The Quick Guide You Will Want to Screenshot

Here is everything in one place, so you can come back to it anytime.

V-Neck: Pendant necklace ending at the point of the V. Go longer for a deeper V.

Crew Neck: Longer necklace in the 20 to 24 inch range worn over the fabric.

Scoop Neck: A necklace sitting just below the collarbone fills the open space perfectly. Go longer for a deeper scoop.

Boat Neck: Delicate necklace just below the neckline or a longer style for balance.

Square Neck: Simple, delicate pendant just below the opening, or skip it entirely.

Turtleneck: Long necklace worn over the fabric, or skip it and wear great earrings instead.

The Simple Rule to Remember

Your necklace should never be sitting in the same spot as your neckline. Give them both a little space, and they will each look their best.

When they are crowding each other, the outfit feels cluttered. When they have room to breathe, everything looks polished and put together.
