How to Find the Perfect One-Piece Swimsuit for Women Over 40

This post has been updated in 2024 with more Modest and Flattering Swimsuits for Women Over 40.

Embracing Your Body

If you ask most women over 40 what the hardest thing to wear out in public is, I bet swimsuits are top of the list, followed closely by mini-skirts. Finding modest and flattering swimsuits for women over 40 can be hard since most of us don’t have a perfect hourglass figure. I promise you, most people (there will always be THAT one) don’t even notice you, and if they do, they’ve forgotten about it two minutes later.

If you had asked me five years ago if I would do a try-on haul with swimsuits, I would have told you that you were nuts! However, with age comes confidence and knowledge. Plus, a deep appreciation of what our bodies have gone through and survived. I have dimples, scars, marks, lumps, and bumps that have taken me a lifetime to acquire, and I am not ashamed of them.

Confidence Over 40

The reason that I started this blog was to help women feel confident in their skin. I’m always encouraging you to get out of your comfort zone and try new styles and trends. These swimsuit posts are me following my own advice because they are waaaaay out of my comfort zone. You’ve heard me say that I’m built like a ruler with hardly any curves; that doesn’t change when I put on a swimsuit. If you are an apple, pear, or rectangle shape, you will still be that shape in a swimsuit. But please don’t let that rob you of the pleasure of going to the beach or pool in a swimsuit.

So, cover your eyes if looking at a woman over 50 in a bathing suit is not your cup of tea.

One Piece Swimsuits For Women Over 40

Here is a recent post with even more one-piece swimsuits – One Piece Swimsuit Guide for Women Over 50

Stylish Details That Make a Swimsuit Stand Out

Mesh One Shoulder Swimsuit (Large) | Black Leopard Kimono (Large) | Oluaki Sandals (Sized up) | Large Hoop Earrings

This is one of my all-time favorite swimsuits! The one-shoulder style is different and so sexy, and the mesh cut-outs show some skin, but not really. Lol! The small strap is removable, but I like the added support. I usually wear a size 12 or a large swimsuit, and this one fits me perfectly.

The Best Swimsuit Cover-Ups to Complete Your Look

Even the cutest swimsuit needs a great cover-up! This flowy Black Leopard Kimono is gorgeous! It is a showstopper, and I got a lot of heads turned as I walked by in it. I’m wearing a large, and it is plenty roomy.

Do you love this Leopard Yellow Kimono Cover-Up as much as I am? Oh, my! This kimono comes in lots of different colors and prints, and I loved it so much that I ordered the solid black version you’ll see later on in this post. I love so many of the prints that it was hard for me to choose just one.

Choosing the Right One-Piece for Sunbathing

Bandeau

This Bandeau Twist Top Swimsuit is one of my favorites. I like detachable straps so that you can take them down when you are sunning. The swimsuit also has molded cups and good coverage, and the color is gorgeous. This is another swimsuit that Miraclesuit sent to me, and it is a winner! The suit comes in a couple of other colors, but I’m partial to this beautiful color. I’m wearing a size 10 in the suit, and it fits great.

Crossover

This swimsuit is one that I didn’t want to order, but my daughter wanted to try it. This One-Piece Front Crossover Swimsuit is in the color Merlot. I liked this swimsuit and thought it was way more flattering than I thought it would be. Remember, try new styles because you never know what you will like. This swimsuit comes in many colors and prints, and I’m wearing a 10-12, which fits me great.

I love the size of this Wide Brim Straw Hat, and since it is sold out, I’ve linked a similar version. It will look great while walking on the beach or lounging by the pool. Even though I have a large head (no comments), the hat fits me great. I’m also wearing a pair of Straw Earrings that was part of a 4-pack. These earrings are lightweight and only about $3 each. They aren’t the best quality, but I’m wearing them to the pool, so I don’t want to wear expensive jewelry that might get lost or damaged.

Tummy Control

Here is a La Blanca Tummy Control One Piece in Capri Blue. This suit comes in a couple of colors, but I decided to try this one since I didn’t have a blue one. My daughter also tried this suit, and she LOVED it but said she wanted a different color. She said she didn’t want to blend in with the water and wanted a color that would stand out if she had trouble. That is something that I would have never thought of, but it does make sense.

I’m wearing a size 12, but I think that I would have preferred a 10 in this suit. It felt loose, and I didn’t feel held in, so this one will go back. A visor is perfect for windy days when a floppy hat will be hard to keep on your head. Plus, I like that you can lie in a lounge chair without worrying about the brim of a floppy hat. This one is sold out, but here is a similar one.

Unique Details

I love the color combination of the La Blanca Tropics of Tropez Keyhole One-Piece swimsuit, but this combination has sold out. The swimsuit is cute and surprisingly comfortable, even though the straps in the back were difficult to navigate the first time. I’m wearing a size 12, and I like the fit. I love La Blanca swimsuits, and you can find more of this style in other solids and prints HERE.

The blue aviator sunglasses that I bought last year from Chico’s match my swimsuit. Since they weren’t expensive, I didn’t worry about getting them scratched. They are no longer in stock, but I found these that are similar for you.

One Shoulder

The Miraclesuit Network Jena c/o Miraclesuit is sophisticated and chic looking! The draping is beautiful, and the mesh cut-outs are tastefully done. I’m wearing a 12 in this suit, but it is still a tad tight, but that is how Miraclesuits fit. Miraclesuit is known for creating modest and flattering swimsuits for women over 40, and I think this one is spot on.

The white Button-Up Cover-Up (similar) looks great with all of the swimsuits. This cover-up is so versatile that I’ll probably be reaching for it the most often. It won’t matter what color swimsuit I wear; this cover-up will look great. I love the 100% cotton lightweight fabric, especially since it won’t be hot this summer. I’m wearing a size large, and this is very generously sized.

Stylish and Modest Two-Piece Swimsuits for Women Over 40

Mix and Match: Two-Piece Swimwear That’s Both Modest and Stylish

Cut-outs are very popular at the moment, so I decided to give this La Blanca One-Shoulder Keyhole Tankini a try. I wasn’t that fond of it when I was trying it on, but it doesn’t look bad in the photos.

The One-Shoulder Keyhole Tankini top is long and has plenty of stretch. I actually like the cut-out, and I think it is a cute detail. The Mid-Waist Swim Bottoms have great coverage, and the crisscross design helps to camouflage tummy issues. I’m wearing a size 12 in the top and bottom, and they both fit great.

Black and White Two-Piece Swimsuits for Women Over 40

This black and white One Shoulder Two Piece Tankini Bathing Suit is striking in person. I love that it is a 2-piece suit that looks like a one-piece. This suit is chic, stylish, flattering, and a tad on the sexy side.

I’m wearing a large, but a medium might have fit me better. This suit comes in lots of prints and colors.

My granddaughter wanted me to take her to the pool. I asked her what she thought I should wear, and she said, “A two-piece.” I laughed and told her that I would do that…just for her. She was expecting to see me in a bikini, but I outsmarted her with this tankini swim dress suit. Lol! I’m wearing a large in both pieces, but I think a medium would have worked better on the bottoms. The Tankini Top has sold out, but here are some others I think you’ll link:

Women’s Chlorine Resistant Bandeau Tankini Swimsuit Top | Chlorine Resistant Tummy Control Adjustable Swim Skirt Swim Bottoms

Up next, we have a two-piece option! I usually consider myself a one-piece gal, but I do love the convenience and ease of a two-piece when it comes to getting dressed or using the restroom. This Chlorine Resistant Bandeau Swimsuit Top is a tankini style. It has removable, adjustable straps, which are great for getting the perfect fit and for avoiding tan lines if you are sunning. The shirring or ruching is perfect for camouflaging any areas you are self-conscious about in the tummy area.

You can choose from a variety of bottoms to mix and match with your swim top, but I opted for the Chlorine Resistant Tummy Control Adjustable Swim Skirt Swim. It has an attached bikini-style panty under the skirt and adjustable side ties so you can choose your own length. It also has a tummy control lining, which is always a bonus!

Bright Pink Swimdress Suits

I bought this Ruched femme swim dress in pink for my trip to Mexico. It is a gorgeous color, and I like the rushing across the tummy to hide lumps and bumps. The flirty skirt is cute and gives more coverage than a regular one-piece. Details like that make for great modest, flattering swimsuits for women over 40.

The gauze cover-up can also be worn as a shirt. I wore it to lunch with a pair of white shorts and tied it at my waist.

I even talked my husband into taking a photo with me so I could show you the new 7″ Surf Shorts I bought him in Scottsdale last week. He loves them and had me order him three more pairs. He is wearing an XL but had me order the other three in a large, so I guess we will have to wait and see if those fit.

Enjoy Life, Even In A Swimsuit

I haven’t wore a bathing suit since my kids were little, which was very long ago. I had surgery which produced a visible scar, and at this point, would have a difficult time displaying it publicly.

  8. I only wear boy short swim bottoms. They’re not easy to find.
