The Appeal of Midi Dresses for Women Over 50
I’ll admit something right up front: if you’ve followed me for very long, you probably know that I usually gravitate toward a maxi dress. Give me something long, flowy, and comfortable, and I’m a happy camper. Lol!
But I have been getting a LOT of requests for midi dresses, so this post is for you, Gurls!
I completely understand why so many women love this length. A midi dress usually hits somewhere between the knee and ankle, giving you more coverage than a shorter dress without all the fabric of a maxi. That can make it a very practical length for church, lunch with friends, travel, showers, weddings, and everyday errands.
I also think midi dresses can be especially nice when you want to show off a cute pair of shoes. My beloved maxi dresses have been known to hide an entire outfit from the ankles down. Lol!
I’ve personally worn several of the dresses in this post, and I’ll share my sizing when I have. Others are styles I chose because the cut, fabric, or design looks especially wearable for women over 50.
Midi Dresses I’ve Worn Lately
This Cotton Midi Dress is a good example of why I understand the appeal of a midi. It gives me plenty of coverage, but it still feels relaxed and easy enough for everyday wear. I’m wearing a medium.
I especially like this type of dress for those days when you want one piece to do all the work. Add sandals, jewelry, and a handbag, and you’re dressed. There is something to be said for an outfit that doesn’t require a committee meeting. Lol!
I’m wearing a size 1 in this Zenergy® UPF Sleeveless Animal Bungee Dress from Chico’s, and this one has a sportier feel than most of the midi dresses in today’s roundup. I like that because not every dress needs to be precious or dressy.
The animal print gives it personality, while the sleeveless design makes it easy for warmer days. I paired mine with comfortable NAOT sandals, which makes this the kind of outfit I could wear for sightseeing, shopping, or a casual day out.
I’m wearing a size 12 in this Palm Tree Print Column Midi Dress in Linen Blend from Ann Taylor, and this one feels a little more polished than the casual styles above.
The column silhouette gives it a streamlined look, while the green palm-tree print keeps it from feeling too serious. I also like the square neckline because it gives you some open space around the face and leaves room for a necklace.
This is exactly the sort of dress I’d pack for a warm-weather vacation because I could wear it to dinner, a resort lunch, or somewhere a little nicer without needing an entirely different outfit.
Casual Midi Dresses You’ll Wear on Repeat
The Smocked Cap Sleeve Midi Pocket Dress from LOFT checks several boxes many of us look for in an everyday dress: an easy silhouette, a defined bodice, and, most importantly, POCKETS.
The smocking gives the top some shape without requiring a structured waistband, and the fuller skirt should make it comfortable for sitting, walking, and going about your day. I could see wearing this with flat sandals for lunch or sneakers for a casual afternoon.
And did I mention the pockets? I probably did, but pockets deserve extra recognition. Lol!
This Ruched Jersey Dress from Talbots may be one of the more versatile options in this roundup.
I’m a fan of jersey dresses because the fabric tends to move with you instead of feeling stiff, and the ruching adds some visual shape through the body. That combination can be especially nice if you like dresses that skim rather than cling.
And that blue certainly isn’t shy. If your closet has become a sea of black and navy, this one will wake things up!
Dresses for Church, Lunch, and Special Gatherings
Does anyone else immediately think of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when they see this print? This Geo Print Flare Midi Dress has that classic feminine look that works beautifully for occasions when you want to be a little more dressed up.
The fitted top and flared skirt create a traditional silhouette, while the print keeps it interesting. I could easily see this working for a bridal shower, luncheon, church service, dinner, or an afternoon wedding.
Add a simple heel or dressy flat and let the dress be the star.
This Fit-and-Flare Shirtdress from Talbots combines two silhouettes that have been around forever for a reason.
A shirtdress gives you that crisp, polished feeling, while a fit-and-flare shape adds definition around the waist before falling away from the body. I especially like the chocolate brown because it feels current for fall without being trendy enough that you’ll tire of it quickly.
The ruffled neckline softens the look and keeps all that brown from feeling too serious. I’d wear this with loafers or flats during the day and switch to a heel for something dressier.
Comfortable Dresses with a Polished Look
This Easy Travel Collared Dress from Talbots immediately caught my eye because it looks like the sort of dress you can wear for several different occasions. The collar gives it a polished look, but the overall silhouette still feels relaxed. It is also washable, which gets extra points from me, especially if I’m packing it for a trip.
I love the black, but it also comes in navy. Either one would give you a good neutral base for changing the look with shoes, jewelry, scarves, or a jacket.
This is also a nice option if you aren’t comfortable in very feminine prints or ruffles but still want something more polished than a casual knit dress.
Lightweight Dresses for Fall Weather
This Button Front Midi Dress from Lands’ End is a nice transitional option because you get a little more arm coverage without jumping straight into heavy fall clothing.
I like the bracelet-length sleeves because they give coverage but still leave your wrists showing, which keeps a longer-sleeved dress from looking too heavy. The blue floral print also gives you plenty of options for accessories.
This would be pretty now with sandals and later with flats or loafers as the weather starts cooling down.
This button-front dress from Lands’ End is technically listed as a maxi, but the approximate 53-inch length may wear more like a long midi on some women, depending on your height and proportions. I love the lightweight cotton voile fabric because it feels airy and breathable, and the deep teal color makes it an easy piece to wear now and into early fall. This would be especially cute with sandals while it’s warm, then flats or loafers as the weather cools down.
Why Midi Dresses Work So Well After 50
You don’t need to start wearing midi dresses simply because you’ve reached a certain age. I don’t believe in dressing according to some imaginary rulebook that says your hemline has to start heading south after your 50th birthday.
But there are some practical reasons this length has become so popular.
A midi gives you coverage while still showing your shoes and some of your lower leg. You also don’t have to worry as much about the hem dragging when you’re walking, getting into the car, or going up stairs like you sometimes do with a maxi.
The trick is finding a midi length that works with your height and proportions.
If a dress hits at the widest part of your calf and you don’t like the way it looks, try one that falls a few inches lower or choose a style that shows more of the ankle. Shoes can make a difference, too. A sandal, pointed-toe flat, wedge, or shoe that doesn’t visually cut across the ankle can help lengthen the look of the leg.
Most importantly, don’t assume a midi dress “doesn’t work on you” because you tried one bad dress. Sometimes it isn’t the length at all. It’s the waist placement, neckline, volume, print, or fabric. Trust me, one cranky dress does not get to speak for the entire midi-dress population. Lol!
I’ll probably always have more maxi dresses hanging in my closet, but after looking at all of these, I understand why so many of you keep asking me to feature midi dresses. They’re practical, easy to dress up or down, and available in everything from casual cotton styles to dresses you could wear to a wedding or special event.
Now I want to know where you stand. Are you Team Midi or Team Maxi? Or are you throwing us both overboard and sticking with knee-length dresses? Let me know in the comments!
