Lightweight Summer Outfits With Arm Coverage for Women Over 50
Getting dressed during the hottest part of summer can be tricky, especially when you want a little arm coverage without adding a heavy layer. I don’t want to spend the day tugging at my clothes or wondering why I wore a jacket when it feels like the surface of the sun outside.
The solution is choosing breathable fabrics and lightweight layers that add coverage without holding in too much heat. Linen, linen blends, loose shirts, and airy sweater knits can all work well, as long as the cut isn’t too fitted or bulky.
Today, I’m sharing four lightweight summer outfits that are comfortable, flattering, and easy to adapt to your own wardrobe. Most of these pieces are from Tommy Bahama, but the real focus is on how to combine breathable fabrics, useful layers, and comfortable shoes to create outfits that make sense for hot summer days.
For reference, I’m 5’6”, and I normally wear a size 8 in pants and a medium or large in tops, depending on the cut and how I want the item to fit. I’ve included the sizes I’m wearing with each outfit so you have something helpful to compare.
A Lightweight Linen Jacket With Cropped Wide-Leg Jeans
This is the kind of outfit I reach for when I want arm coverage but don’t want to feel bundled up. The linen jacket is lightweight and breathable, so it gives me an extra layer without feeling like a traditional jacket.
The Linen Raw-Edge Jacket has a relaxed shape, lightweight fabric, and unfinished raw-edge detailing that gives it a casual feel. It is not meant to provide warmth like a traditional jacket. Think of it as a breathable top layer that adds arm coverage and helps finish an outfit.
Because linen naturally wrinkles, you should expect a few creases as you wear it. That is part of the fabric’s relaxed look, although a quick pass with a steamer will help when you want it to look fresher.
I’m wearing a large because I prefer a relaxed fit through the shoulders and arms. That also gives me enough room to layer it over a tank without the fabric pulling or bunching.
Underneath the jacket, I’m wearing the Kauai Glimmer Bay Tank Top in a medium. It has a small pleat in the front that helps the fabric fall away from the stomach instead of clinging to every lump and bump. I appreciate details like that because a thin summer tank can sometimes show far more than we bargained for. My stomach does not need its own press conference.
The neckline has a subtle shimmer that makes the tank feel a little dressier, but it still works for casual outfits. You could wear the tank alone when it is especially hot and add the jacket indoors when the air-conditioning is working overtime.

These cropped jeans have a wide-leg shape and casual raw hem. They are relaxed through the leg without being extremely oversized. Since they’re cropped, they also allow the sandals to show instead of disappearing under the denim.
The lighter wash works nicely during spring and summer, and the cropped hem makes them easy to wear with sandals, flats, or casual sneakers. I’m wearing my normal size 8.
Accessories I’ve Worn All Summer
The Quince Handwoven Leather Mini Shoulder Bag and my NAOT Sandals have been two of my most-used accessories this summer.
The woven leather gives the bag texture, but the neutral color means it works with almost anything. It is small enough to carry comfortably while still holding my phone and daily essentials.
The NAOT sandals are supportive and comfortable enough for days when I’ll be doing more walking. I sized up in these, which is worth keeping in mind when ordering.
Wearing a Camp Shirt as a Lightweight Summer Jacket
A button-up shirt doesn’t always have to be worn buttoned. One of my favorite ways to get arm coverage in the summer is to wear a lightweight shirt open over a tank, almost like a jacket.
The Chambray O’Lei Linen-Blend Cargo Pants are loose, flowy, and easy to wear when the temperature climbs. I’m wearing a medium, and they have enough room through the legs to allow air to circulate.
Cargo pants can sometimes look heavy because of the pockets and utility details, but the chambray color and linen-blend fabric keep this pair looking summery. The relaxed leg also balances the shorter camp shirt and fitted tank.
I finished the outfit with Italian Leather Soft Loafer in almond. The lighter neutral color keeps the outfit from looking heavy and works beautifully with the peach tank and chambray pants. I’m wearing a size 9.
The Mosaic Cove Camp Shirt has a relaxed button-front design, short sleeves, and a colorful mosaic-inspired print. The fabric is lightweight enough to layer over a tank without creating too much bulk.
You can wear it open, button it completely, or tie it loosely at the waist. Wearing it open creates a vertical line down the front of the body, which can also make the outfit look longer and less boxy.
Underneath it, I added the Peach Johnny Collar Linen Tank Top in a medium. The collar makes the tank look a little more finished than a basic scoop-neck style, and the soft peach color coordinates beautifully with the print in the shirt.
The tank is lightweight and cool, but the collar gives it enough structure that I would also feel comfortable wearing it alone. This would be a great option for lunch, vacation sightseeing, or anywhere you want to look put together without wearing a dressier blouse.
The Apatchy Raffia Crossbody is new, and I already love it. I own the larger Esme Raffia Tote Bag with Leather Trim from the same retailer, but I wanted something smaller for everyday outfits.
The raffia texture works especially well during summer, and the crossbody strap leaves my hands free. It is a practical size for running errands, going to lunch, or traveling when I don’t want to carry a large tote.
The Same Camp Shirt Styled With Blush Flare Jeans
I wanted to style the Mosaic Cove Camp Shirt a second way so you could see how different it looks when it is worn buttoned instead of layered over a tank.
The Aria Flare Jeans have a fitted shape through the hips and upper thighs with a wider flare below the knee. The blush shade is softer than a bright pink and works almost like a warm neutral.
The size 29 fits me well. Since flare jeans are meant to fit closer through the top of the leg, pay attention to the hip, thigh, and rise measurements when ordering rather than judging the fit by the waist alone.
Because these jeans have more color and shape than a basic straight-leg pair, I kept the rest of the accessories fairly simple. The raffia crossbody works with the summery print, and the cognac leather loafers add warmth.
I always like to show an item more than one way when possible because that is how I decide if something deserves space in my closet.
A printed shirt can be pretty on a hanger, but I’m much more interested in how many outfits I can make with it. This one can be worn open over a tank, buttoned with jeans, tucked into shorts, or layered over a simple summer dress.
That kind of flexibility is especially useful when packing. One shirt that works as both a top and a lightweight layer earns its place in the suitcase.
A Lightweight Summer Sweater With Dark-Wash Cropped Jeans
A sweater might not be the first thing that comes to mind for summer, but the fabric makes all the difference. This linen-blend V-neck sweater is lightweight, breathable, and loose enough to wear during warmer weather.
I’m wearing a medium, and I like that the V-neckline opens up the area around my face without being too low. The knit has enough texture to make the outfit interesting, but it doesn’t feel thick or bulky.
The linen blend gives the sweater a lighter feel than a traditional cotton or wool knit. It has a relaxed fit, V-neckline, and enough airflow for days when you want coverage without wearing a jacket.
Because it is a knit, I would wear a nude bra or a thin camisole underneath if the weave appears slightly open in bright light. That is one of those things I always check before leaving the house because indoor lighting can be sneaky.
Dark denim is often associated with fall and winter, but a cropped length makes it much easier to wear during summer. Showing the ankle lightens the overall look and gives your sandals a chance to be seen.
I paired the sweater with dark-wash cropped jeans that I bought during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale last year. My exact jeans are no longer available, but I found an updated version from the same brand that is included in this year’s sale.
Dark-wash jeans also work well for evenings, restaurants, or casual events when light-wash denim feels a little too relaxed.
I finished the outfit with The Selene 50 sandals from Margaux in a size 40. The small heel gives me a little height without feeling like a traditional high heel.
The simple shape works well with cropped jeans because it doesn’t compete with the hemline. These also complement the structured black satchel and make the outfit feel appropriate for dinner or an evening out.
The Quince Italian Leather Medium Convertible Satchel is one of my favorite handbags because it has three separate compartments.
I like having designated places for my phone, wallet, makeup, glasses, and all the other goodies that somehow travel with me. Otherwise, I end up digging through the bottom of my bag like I’m looking for a treat that may or may not exist.
The structured shape and black leather make the bag look dressier, and the convertible strap gives me the option to carry it by the handles or wear it over my shoulder.
The Jewelry I Wore With Every Outfit
I wore the same jewelry with all four outfits:
I often wear small Diamond Huggies because they add a little sparkle without feeling too formal. They are also easy to leave on throughout the day.
I layered the Ring Concierge Diamond Huggies with the Dove Necklace and the Initial Pendant Necklace. The different chain lengths keep the necklaces from sitting directly on top of each other, and the combination works with both open necklines and button-front shirts.
Wearing the same jewelry with several outfits also makes getting dressed easier. I don’t feel the need to change every accessory each time I change clothes, especially when I already know these pieces work.
How to Get Arm Coverage Without Feeling Too Hot
Look for fabrics that breathe, such as linen, cotton, chambray, and lightweight blends. The cut matters too. A loose jacket or open shirt usually feels cooler than a fitted cardigan because air can move through it.
Pay attention to what you wear underneath your layer. A lightweight tank or sleeveless top will usually be cooler than wearing a short-sleeve shirt under a jacket.
You can also use color and proportion to keep the outfit looking balanced. A printed shirt worn open over a solid tank creates a long vertical line, while cropped jeans or lighter shoes help keep a layered outfit from looking too heavy.
Most importantly, choose layers that you can easily remove. Summer temperatures may be hot outside, but stores, restaurants, and churches can feel like walk-in freezers. Joe may think the thermostat is perfectly comfortable, but I am usually searching for something to cover my arms.
One Last Thing
You do not have to choose between covering your arms and staying comfortable in the summer. The right fabrics and relaxed shapes can give you both.
A linen jacket, an open camp shirt, or a lightweight sweater can be enough to make you feel more comfortable without adding a thick layer. I also like that each of these outfits can be adjusted using pieces you may already own.
Start with the clothes you reach for most, then add one breathable layer that works with several outfits. That is usually far more useful than buying an entire new summer wardrobe.

Verse Of The Day
Revelation 3:20 (NIV)
20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
🙂 I been looking at some light weight sweater shirts but just the thought when it’s a 100 outside makes me say no really quick
I know the feeling, but then I go into a restaurant and the A/C is set to 0, lol. I keep one handy for indoors.
😊I love the first outfit with the white jacket. I also love the raffia purse and the blue sweater looks so pretty on you.
