Lands’ End Summer Clothes for Women Over 50 You Can Wear Into Fall

Summer may be winding down on the calendar, but in a lot of the country, the heat clearly did not get the memo. Lol! There are still plenty of hot days ahead, which makes this a tricky time to shop. I don’t want to spend money on something I’ll only wear for another few weeks.

That’s why I tried to choose Lands’ End pieces that make sense right now, but can also keep working as we move into early fall. A tank or sleeveless shirt can go under a denim jacket or cardigan later. Linen pants can be paired with a lightweight sweater and loafers instead of sandals. Even some of the dresses can stretch into cooler weather with an extra layer and a change of shoes.

At this point in the season, that’s what I’m looking for: clothes that keep me comfortable while it’s still hot but won’t immediately get shoved to the back of the closet when September arrives.

I’ve worn quite a few Lands’ End pieces over the years, including swimsuits, shorts, jeans, shirts, and dresses. What I tend to like about the brand is that many of their styles are classic enough to work beyond one season.

Today I’m sharing Lands’ End summer clothes for women over 50 that I think can help bridge that awkward stretch between summer and fall. For the pieces I haven’t personally tried, I’ll tell you what caught my attention and how I would wear them now and later.

What I Look for in Late-Summer Clothes

At this point in the year, I want more than something that’s simply cute.

The fabric still needs to work in the heat. Linen, lightweight cotton, and poplin are high on my list while temperatures are still warm.

I want pieces I can layer later. Sleeveless shirts, tanks, polos, and dresses are much more useful when they can slip under a cardigan or denim jacket once the mornings cool down.

Color matters, too. Navy, black, white, olive, denim, and richer neutrals tend to transition into fall more easily than very summery prints and pastels.

And I want enough versatility to justify the purchase. If I can wear something three different ways instead of one, it has a much better chance of earning its place in my closet.

Summer Tops That Can Keep Working Into Fall

The No-Iron Shirt I’ve Worn A LOT!

This No-Iron Sleeveless Shirt is a Lands’ End piece I’ve actually worn a lot. The first thing that got my attention was the “no-iron” part. I don’t mind steaming something occasionally, but ironing a shirt in the middle of summer ranks somewhere below cleaning out the garage on my list of fun activities. Lol!

Right now, I’d wear it exactly like this with summer pants, shorts, or a skirt. Once the weather starts cooling down, this is an easy piece to layer under a denim jacket, cardigan, or lightweight blazer.

That makes it much more useful to me than a top that only works during the hottest part of summer.

If you prefer having your upper arms covered, this obviously won’t be your shirt to be worn alone. But if you’re comfortable in sleeveless styles, it’s a very easy layering piece.

A Cotton Tank With a Little Detail

The Cotton Tank Top caught my eye because it’s simple enough to work as a basic, but it doesn’t look like an undershirt. I’d pay attention to the armholes and neckline when it arrives since I haven’t personally tried this tank. Those are the two areas that can make or break a tank top for me.

For the remaining hot days, I’d wear it with linen pants, shorts, or white jeans. Later, it could go under a denim jacket, cardigan, or even a blazer with darker jeans.

This is one reason I like navy, black, and white basics at the end of summer. They don’t scream one particular season, so they’re much easier to keep wearing.

A Polo That Can Easily Move Into September

The Supima Cotton Polo is another classic piece, but I think the smoother cotton gives it a little more polish than the sporty polos many of us remember. A polo can be a good answer when a T-shirt feels too casual but a blouse feels like more effort than you want to make.

Wear it now with shorts, cropped pants, or white jeans. As summer starts giving way to fall, I’d swap the white jeans for regular denim or dark trousers and add loafers or flats.

If it’s cool enough, you could also layer a lightweight cardigan over it. And if polos immediately make you think of your high school golf team, you are allowed to keep scrolling.

Comfortable Pants for Now and Early Fall

Pull-On Crops for Casual Days

The Starfish Mid-Rise Pull-On Crop Pants are the kind of pants I would consider for errands, travel, or casual days when comfort is the priority. The pull-on waistband is what caught my attention, especially for a long car ride or flight.

I’d want to see how substantial the fabric once it arrives since I haven’t tried this particular pair. That’s especially important right now because anything too heavy can still feel miserable on a warm afternoon.

For late summer, I’d wear them with a tank or short-sleeve top and sandals. In early fall, you could add a lightweight sweater or cardigan and swap the sandals for flats or loafers. That little change in shoes and layers can keep cropped pants working longer than you might expect.

Linen Pieces for Really Hot Weather

When heat and humidity are still hanging around, linen is one of the first fabrics I look for. It allows airflow and doesn’t need to cling to the body to look good.

The trade-off, of course, is wrinkles. I’ve made peace with linen wrinkles. If you haven’t, a linen blend might make you happier.

Breezy Linen Palazzo Pants

The Linen High-Rise Palazzo Pants check several of my hot-weather boxes: linen fabric, plenty of room through the legs, and a shape that can be worn casually or dressed up. Right now, I’d pair them with a tank, sleeveless shirt, or lightweight tee and sandals.

Later, especially if you choose a darker or neutral color, you could add a fitted lightweight sweater, denim jacket, or cardigan and switch to loafers or flats. I wouldn’t try to push very pale linen pants deep into fall, but navy, black, tan, olive, or other muted shades can easily get more wear in September.

If you’re petite, I’d pay close attention to the inseam on any palazzo pant. Extra fabric puddling around your shoes can quickly overwhelm a smaller frame.

A Longer Linen Short

The Linen High-Rise Pull-On 7-Inch Shorts are a nice option for anyone who wants more coverage than a typical short without going all the way to Bermuda length. Seven inches is a length I personally find very wearable. It gives you thigh coverage while still looking like a summer short rather than a cropped pant.

These are more of a true summer piece than some of the others in this post, but that doesn’t mean you’d only get a week or two out of them. In many parts of the country, shorts stay in rotation well into September.

As temperatures start changing, pair them with a lightweight long-sleeve button-front shirt or thin sweater and loafers instead of a tank and sandals. That can make the outfit feel more seasonal even if you’re still showing some leg.

Just remember that linen can relax as you wear it, so I’d pay attention to the sizing information and reviews rather than automatically sizing up for comfort.

The Summer Shirt That Can Do Several Jobs

I love the idea of the Linen Oversized Button-Front Shirt because it’s one of those pieces that earns its suitcase space. During the hottest weather, wear it open over a tank, buttoned with linen pants or shorts, or use it as an easy swimsuit cover-up.

Later, I’d wear it buttoned with jeans, or leave it open over a tank and add darker pants. You could even layer a cardigan over it once the temperatures cool down enough.

This is exactly the kind of purchase I like at the end of summer because it doesn’t have to disappear the minute the calendar says fall.

One caution with anything labeled oversized: oversized is a style, not a sizing instruction. I wouldn’t automatically size up. If you’re between sizes or petite, you may actually prefer the smaller size so you get the relaxed look without drowning in fabric.

Dresses That Don’t Have to Be Packed Away Yet

One reason I love dresses during late summer is that they’re cool now but can often be stretched into another season with one simple layer.

A Polka-Dot Midi That Can Transition

The Poplin Halter Midi Dress has a much more fashion-forward look than what some people expect from Lands’ End. I like the rich ginger brown polka dress because it’s fun for summer but not locked into summer colors. Right now, I’d wear this with flat sandals or wedges and simple jewelry.

As temperatures cool, a denim jacket would immediately make it feel more like early fall. You could also swap the sandals for flats or a low heel.

I probably wouldn’t try to push a halter dress into genuinely cold weather, but for those warm September days and cooler evenings, I think you could still get quite a bit of wear from it.

The neckline is the detail I’d pay the most attention to before ordering. I’d look closely at the back and armholes to make sure the bra you plan to wear won’t show.

A Shirt Dress That’s Almost Better for Early Fall

The Oxford Long-Sleeve Button-Front Shirt Dress may actually make even more sense as we head toward fall than it did in the middle of July. Because it has long sleeves and more structure, this isn’t the dress I’d choose for the hottest, muggiest afternoon.

But it could be a great option for church, lunch, travel, an air-conditioned restaurant, or one of those early fall days that starts cool and warms up by afternoon.

Wear it now with sandals or sneakers. Later, I’d add loafers, ballet flats, or even ankle boots depending on the length and cut. You could also layer a cardigan over it or add a denim jacket if the proportions work.

That’s the kind of piece I like buying now because it doesn’t come with an expiration date at the end of August.

Which Lands’ End Pieces Give You the Most Wear?

If you’re shopping this late in the season, I wouldn’t buy something simply because it’s cute.

I’d ask myself how many different ways I can wear it and how long I can keep it in rotation.

If you need a layering top: I’d look first at the no-iron sleeveless shirt or cotton tank.
If you’re still dealing with serious heat: the linen pants, shorts, and oversized shirt make the most sense.
If comfort is the priority: the pull-on crop pants are worth considering.
If you want something that moves easily into fall: the polo, linen shirt, or shirt dress would be at the top of my list.
If you want a dress for late-summer events: the polka-dot midi can still work into September with a denim jacket and different shoes.

At this stage of life, I’m much more interested in buying something I’ll actually wear repeatedly. I want a new item to solve a problem, replace something worn out, work with clothes I already own, or make getting dressed easier.

I’ve shopped Lands’ End for years, and there are categories I particularly associate with the brand, including swimsuits, classic tops, practical outerwear, and easy casual clothing. But that doesn’t mean every Lands’ End item is automatically right for me, or for you.

That’s why I try to look past the brand name and ask the same questions I would anywhere else:

Will I actually wear it?
Is the fabric appropriate for the weather?
Does the fit work for my body?
Can I style it more than one way?
And can I keep wearing it beyond the next few weeks?

Those questions have saved me from quite a few purchases over the years. Unfortunately, they have not cured me completely. Lol!
