A J.Crew Factory Try-On with 5 Outfits for Late Summer and Fall

I stopped at J.Crew Factory for a try-on this weekend while I was on my way to visit my parents. I normally wear a dress when I’m doing several try-ons because it gives me only one piece of clothing to keep track of. By the third dressing room, I’m usually surrounded by hangers, tags, and one missing shoe, so I need all the help I can get. Lol!

I styled five outfits that can be worn now and carried into early fall. There are lightweight pants, white jeans, an easy button-up, a graphic tee, and a sweater that will be nice once the temperatures finally decide to cooperate.

Before we get started, I have a true confession. I’ve gained a little weight, and a couple of these pieces were kind enough to let me know they had noticed. My sister and I have both gained around ten pounds, so we’re going to start paying closer attention to what goes into our mouths. Apparently, sampling something from everyone’s plate still counts, which seems a little unfair.

For reference, I’m 5’6″ and usually wear a size 8 in pants and a medium or large in tops, depending on the cut and how I want something to fit. I’ll tell you exactly what size I tried, how each piece felt, and where I would make a change.

A Soft Blue and White Outfit That Feels Fresh

This white Puff-sleeve top immediately caught my eye because it has more personality than a basic white tee, but it is still simple enough to wear with almost anything. The short sleeves have a soft puff shape without adding too much volume, and the neckline has a small ruffled edge and split opening.

These wide-leg pants would work for the office, church, lunch, or any occasion when jeans feel a little too casual. A striped tee, navy sweater, or simple tank and cardigan would all look great with them.

I’m wearing a large, and it fits nicely through the shoulders, bust, and body. The fabric appears lightweight, so it works well during warmer weather, but it would also look cute under a denim jacket or cardigan later in the season. The length is easy to wear untucked, and it also gives you enough fabric for a small front tuck.

The Pinstriped Lizzie wide-leg pants are a pale blue with a subtle stripe. From a distance, they almost look like solid light blue pants, which makes them very easy to style. The color is soft and flattering, especially with white, navy, tan, or a deeper shade of blue.

I’m wearing a size 29, and the waist fit, although it was a little more fitted than I prefer at the moment. The wide leg falls straight from the hip and creates a long line. These are full-length pants on me, and they almost touch the floor while I’m wearing the NAOT Sandals.

A Graphic Tee with Chocolate Brown Pants

You know I wasn’t going to walk past a graphic tee with an adorable dog wearing glasses and a green cap. Lucy might question why I’m wearing another dog on my shirt, but she’ll get over it as long as the treats keep coming.

The Book-smart dog graphic tee is playful without feeling childish. The background is an off-white shade, and the green, brown, and black in the graphic make it especially easy to wear going into fall.

I’m wearing a medium, and it technically fits. However, I would order a large because I prefer my T-shirts to have a looser, flowier fit. This one sat closer to my body through the bust and stomach than I like. That does not mean the sizing is wrong; it simply comes down to how you prefer your tees to fit.

The chocolate brown Lizzie wide-leg pants are the same style as the light blue pinstriped pair. I’m wearing a size 29, and these felt slightly snug through the waist and upper hip. I could wear them, but I would be more comfortable trying the size 30.

I love the rich brown color. Brown is going to pair beautifully with cream, camel, light blue, green, rust, and animal print. It is also a nice alternative for those of us who don’t reach for black very often.

The wide-leg shape balances the more fitted tee, and a small front tuck helps define the waist. You could add a denim jacket, tan cardigan, or lightweight utility jacket once the weather cools down.

A Blue Striped Shirt with White Straight-Leg Jeans

A striped button-up is one of those pieces that can stay in your closet for years. It looks crisp with white jeans, but it also works with denim, navy pants, khaki trousers, and even shorts.

This outfit is simple, but the blue and white combination always looks fresh. You could wear it now with sandals, then switch to loafers or ballet flats as the weather cools.

The Poplin button-up shirt has a classic collar, button front, long sleeves, and a curved shirttail hem. I’m wearing a large, and the fit was very good. It gave me enough room across the bust without pulling at the buttons, and the body skimmed rather than clung.

The sleeves appear long enough to wear down, but I would probably roll them or push them up for a more relaxed look. The shirt also has enough length to wear untucked. That makes it helpful for anyone who wants a little more coverage through the stomach or hips.

The Essential straight white jeans are a size 30. These fit comfortably through the waist and hips, and the all-day stretch made them easier to move in than rigid denim. The leg is straight without being skinny, and the cropped length hit a little above my ankle.

The white denim did not look overly thin in the dressing-room lighting, which is always one of my first concerns with white jeans. I would still wear nude undergarments underneath them, because white jeans have been known to reveal secrets nobody asked them to share.

A Navy Printed Top with the Same White Jeans

I kept on the white straight-leg jeans and changed into this navy printed top. This outfit shows how easily one pair of jeans can move from a classic striped look to something a little more feminine.

The Printed ruffle-sleeve top has a navy background with a small white print. The short sleeves have a ruffled edge that gives the shirt some shape, but the ruffles aren’t so large that they overwhelm the shoulders.

I’m wearing a medium, and it fits nicely through the shoulders, bust, and body. The button front gives it the look of a traditional shirt, while the print and sleeves keep it from feeling too businesslike. I also like the length. It can be worn untucked, fully tucked, or with a small front tuck, depending on the bottoms.

Because the print is small and the colors are neutral, this top would be easy to mix with white, navy, light-wash denim, or khaki. It would also look nice under a cardigan since the sleeves aren’t bulky.

A Lightweight Sweater with Cropped Wide-Leg Jeans

The last outfit brings in a little more fall color without adding a heavy layer. The green Tape-yarn crewneck sweater has an open, lightweight knit that should work well during the transition between seasons.

I’m wearing a medium, and the crewneck sweater fits nicely. It has a relaxed shape without looking oversized, and the three-quarter-length sleeves make it practical for those in-between days when it’s cool in the morning and warm by afternoon.

The green is muted rather than bright, so it will pair well with denim, white, cream, brown, and camel. You could wear a nude camisole underneath if the knit feels too open, although it did not look especially sheer in the dressing room.

The Light-feel wide-leg cropped jeans are a size 29, and I needed the size 30. They buttoned, but they were pulling across the front and sitting too closely through the waist and hips. The puckering near the zipper is a pretty good clue that the jeans are asking for a little more room.

The denim itself felt lightweight, which makes these a good option for late summer and early fall. They have a wide, cropped leg and hit above my ankle. The light wash keeps them casual, and the wider hem works well with sandals, sneakers, clogs, or a slim ankle boot.

I liked the shape enough that I would try them again in size 30. Sizing up would give the waist and hip area a smoother fit without changing the overall look of the jeans.

What I Thought About the Sizing

All five tops fit nicely in the sizes I tried. The only top I would change is the Book-smart dog graphic tee. I’m wearing a medium, but I would choose a large because I like my T-shirts loose and flowy.

The size 30 white straight-leg jeans fit comfortably and gave me the amount of stretch I prefer. The size 29 Lizzie wide-leg pants fit, but they were more fitted through the waist than I like right now. I would compare the 29 and 30 before deciding.

The light-wash cropped jeans definitely needed a size 30. The size 29 was too snug through the waist and upper hip, and the fabric was pulling around the zipper.

The number printed inside a waistband is simply information. Bodies change, sizing varies from one style to another, and sometimes lunch was worth it. Buy the size that fits the body you have today. You will look better and feel much more comfortable.

Which J.Crew Factory Outfit Would I Wear Most?

The blue striped button-up with the white straight-leg jeans is probably the outfit I would wear most often. Both pieces are versatile, and I could style them several different ways with clothing already in my closet.

The dog graphic tee was the most fun piece in the dressing room, and I liked it even more with the chocolate brown pants. I would simply size up in the tee and possibly in the pants, so the whole outfit felt more relaxed.

One Last Thing

Try-ons are a good reminder that a piece of clothing can be cute and still not be right in the size you grabbed. That is not a failure on your part. It is simply part of finding clothes that fit comfortably and help you feel good when you walk out the door.
