Is the Crochet Top Trend Wearable at 50? I Found 10 That Actually Work
Gurls, I’ll admit it… when I first heard crochet tops were trending again, my mind immediately went to itchy 1970s swimsuits and those tiny festival tops that require approximately 12 ab muscles and zero support garments. Ha! You’re probably wondering, “Is the crochet top trend wearable at 50?” The answer is yes!
But after digging through the newer styles, I realized something important. The crochet trend has actually become much more wearable, polished, and flattering than it used to be. The key is finding pieces with structure, layering potential, and a more refined knit instead of anything overly sheer or costume-looking.
Plus, these are REALLY cute.
This Varley top is so cute, and I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on it. The downside is that you can see through the holey knit, but I’m wearing a nude bodysuit underneath, so everything is good. The top is slightly oversized, so I also tried a small one. However, I liked the oversized look, so I bought the medium. The top is also available in a couple of other colors.

Crochet style knit tops, like this Pointelle Knit Vest, are perfect for summer. They are cool to wear and keep you modern-looking. The sleeveless vest gives off a tailored yet relaxed vibe, and the slightly longer shorts offer that extra bit of confidence.
The Polished Crochet Tops That Feel Classic
Cotton Crochet Short Sleeve Crewneck Pullover – Stripe
This striped crochet pullover is one of the most wearable versions of the trend I’ve seen. The stripe pattern keeps it feeling classic and preppy instead of overly bohemian. I also love that the crochet detail adds texture without making the top feel too revealing.
Crochet Boatneck Pullover
This crochet boatneck pullover feels sophisticated and relaxed at the same time. Boatneck styles are wonderful after 50 because they highlight your neckline without showing too much skin. Pair this with white jeans or relaxed denim, and you instantly look polished without trying too hard. This is a VERY subtle crochet top. Check out the trim!
Striped Crochet Sweater
This striped crochet sweater has such a fresh, elevated look. The open knit keeps it breathable for warmer weather, while the structured shape keeps it from looking sloppy. I could easily see this with white pants, denim shorts, or even layered over a tank dress.
Crochet Styles That Work Beautifully Layered
Cotton Crochet Scalloped Tank
This scalloped crochet tank is feminine without feeling overly delicate. The scalloped detail softens the look, while the thicker knit makes it much easier to wear than some of the more sheer crochet pieces out there. I would layer this over a nude tank for extra coverage and comfort. And of course, it would look great with a tan shrug or a crisp white shirt for extra coverage.
Pointelle Short Sleeve Cardigan
This pointelle short sleeve cardigan gives you the crochet look in a much softer, subtler way. The lightweight knit feels breathable, while the cardigan style makes it easy to layer over dresses or tanks. It’s a great option if you want to try the trend without fully committing to open-weave crochet.
LC Lauren Conrad Crochet Sweater Tee
This crochet sweater tee has a very wearable, everyday feel to it. The sweater-style construction gives you more coverage, which makes the trend feel approachable and comfortable. It’s one of those tops that looks cute without looking like you’re trying too hard to be trendy. Yes, you’ll need to wear a cute cami under!
The Relaxed Summer Versions
EVALESS Crochet Hollow Out Knit Top
This crochet knit top leans a little more beachy and relaxed, but it still works beautifully when styled correctly. The looser fit makes it comfortable for hot weather, and it looks especially nice layered over a simple tank or camisole. I’d wear this with white jeans or linen pants for an easy summer outfit.
Gap Crochet Sweater Top
Okay, hear me out, lol. I’m not wearing this with my bra showing. I’m going to put a cute contrasting tank underneath and pair it with some actual pants, lol. This crochet sweater top has that effortless, casual style Gap does so well. The knit texture gives your outfit interest without needing a lot of accessories or styling.
Crochet That Adds Texture Without Looking Too Young
Simply Vera Vera Wang Crochet Front Top
This crochet front top keeps the trend focused in just one area, which makes it much easier to wear after 50. Sometimes full crochet can feel overwhelming, but this balances texture with coverage beautifully. It’s a nice option if you want to dip your toe into the trend without going all in.
Roaman’s Medallion Pattern French Crochet Sweater Top
This medallion crochet sweater top proves the trend can absolutely work beautifully in plus sizes, too. The more structured crochet pattern keeps it looking intentional and flattering instead of bulky. I also love that it gives you texture and detail without clinging.
Is The Crochet Trend For You?
The crochet trend is absolutely wearable after 50… if you choose the right pieces. The trick is avoiding anything overly sheer, super cropped, or festival-inspired and instead looking for styles that feel polished, relaxed, and easy to layer.
And when it’s done well, it can actually make a simple jeans-and-top outfit look much more stylish with very little effort.
