IN THE TWINKLING OF AN EYE

I am sure that all of you have heard the saying, “in the twinkling of an eye.” I looked up the definition in the dictionary, and it basically means, happens quickly. Before this weekend, I would have probably have said that the first thing that came to my mind about this saying would have been Santa Claus. I thought that the poem, The Night Before Christmas had this saying, but, I would have been completely mistaken since it actually says, “with the wink of an eye.” Lol! This weekend, I traveled to Atlanta to go to a business presentation with my Energizer Bunny Friend. We met up with a couple of ladies that we know from previous meetings, and then we went out to eat dinner the first night. I was talking to my friend from Florida, and she told me that she had a close call with her eye a week or so ago. She was outside hanging up some spring decorations when a piece of metal fell into her eye. She was lucky because she was able to flush it out before it scratched or damaged her eye.

When we were at our meeting, my EBF asked me if I had a mirror. I didn’t have one, but I asked her why she needed one. She said that a hair must have gotten in her eye, so she was going to go to the bathroom and get it out. As the day progressed,  the eye got worse, and a trip to the eye doctor confirmed what we had surmised…the eye sustained a deep scratch. Luckily, we were able to find an ophthalmologist who prescribed eye drops so that she could find some relief from the intense pain.

Both of these events started me thinking about how things could change in an instance. It reminded me of how fragile we really are as humans. Both of these ladies could have easily have lost their eyesight which changes your entire life. That got me to thinking, are you prepared?

1 Corinthians 15: 51-52

⁵¹ Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—⁵² in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

While I was talking about how life can change because of a health issue, this verse is talking about how in a flash how your life can change because of the coming of the Lord. The scary part is, are you prepared? Are you prepared for anything that life throws at you? Are you ready for unexpected health issues, unexpected accidents, unexpected losses?

Even though I asked the question, I already know the answer. We are never really prepared for what might happen tomorrow. I have health insurance, I have auto and home insurance, and I have a will for just in case something happens to me. But, even with all of that, I am not “prepared” emotionally. Honestly, I don’t think that anyone can be prepared for situations that you’ve never experienced before.

How do I get “saved” insurance? My home and auto mean nothing to me in comparison to my soul. So, my “saved” insurance is prayer; it is reading the scriptures and trying to live my life according to His word, and, it is having belief in the Lord.

I may never be fully prepared for the coming of the Lord, but I can prepare a little more each day. I don’t know when the Lord will come; it can be in the twinkling of an eye.

Matthew 24:44

⁴⁴ So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
