How to Wear White This Summer Without Worrying About Stains or See-Through Fabric
Gurls, nothing looks fresher, cleaner, or more expensive in the summer than white clothing. Every year when the temperatures start rising, I find myself reaching for white jeans, white dresses, white tops, and breezy white skirts because they instantly make outfits feel crisp and chic.
White is probably the color I wear most during the summer. I love it with denim, linen, raffia, gold jewelry, sandals, and a little self-tanner if the legs are making their first public appearance of the season. Lol.
But I also hear from so many women who say, “I can’t wear white.” Usually, it is because they are worried about stains, thin fabric, or feeling like white will show every lump, bump, and wrinkle. I get it. White can be tricky, but it is not off-limits. Women over 50 can absolutely wear white and look beautiful doing it.
The trick is choosing the right fabrics, the right undergarments, and pieces that skim instead of cling. Here are some of my favorite ways to wear white this summer, along with a few tips that make it a lot less intimidating.

A Modern Shirt and Linen Pants Always Look Expensive
A bold, printed shirt with linen pants is one of those outfits that looks elegant without feeling fussy. This is the kind of look I love for summer because it feels polished, but I’m still comfortable enough to sit, move, and actually live my life.
The Modern Classic Shirt gives the outfit structure, which helps balance the relaxed feel of the linen pants. I’m wearing my usual medium in the shirt and a size 8 in the pants. The Linen Pants is breezy without being overwhelming, and the sandals keep everything casual and wearable.
This is also a great reminder that white doesn’t have to mean head-to-toe white. Adding a blold color, or soft whites, creams, and natural linen tones all work together beautifully.
White Denim Makes Summer Outfits Feel Fresh
White denim is one of my favorite ways to wear white because it instantly brightens anything you pair with it. A lightweight cotton shirt and white cropped jeans make a simple outfit feel fresh and summer-ready.
I’m wearing a medium in the shirt and a size 28 in the jeans, although I would have preferred a 29. That is the kind of fit note I always pay attention to because white denim is not very forgiving when it is too tight. If white jeans pull across the hips, thighs, or pockets, size up. Nobody needs their pants telling secrets. Lol.
The cropped length works well with sandals, especially if you want to show a little ankle and keep the outfit from feeling heavy.
A Puff Sleeve Top Softens White Denim
A feminine white top is such an easy way to make jeans feel prettier. This puff-sleeve button-up has a little extra detail without being over the top, and I like that it adds shape around the shoulders.
I’m wearing a large in the top, and the fit is comfortable. Since the cropped jeans are the same as the white pair above, I still think sizing up to a 29 would have been better for me.
This outfit is a good example of how texture and shape can make an all-white look more interesting.
A White Tee and Shorts Is Easy, Casual, and Cool
A tee and shorts might be simple, but simple is not a bad thing. In the summer heat, I am not trying to win an Olympic medal in outfit planning. I want something cool, flattering, and easy.
The Cotton Slub V-Neck Tee gives that relaxed summer feel, and the Pull-On Scallop Button Jean Shorts adds just enough interest. I especially like white shorts when they have a pull-on waist or a little stretch because comfort matters.
This is the kind of outfit I would wear for errands, lunch, or a casual day out with Joe. Although, if we are eating barbecue, I may rethink the white tee. I am brave, not reckless.
A Sleeveless White Shirt Is a Summer Closet Workhorse
A sleeveless white shirt is one of those pieces I reach for again and again. It works with jeans, skirts, shorts, linen pants, and almost anything else hanging in your closet.
This No Iron Sleeveless Shirt is especially nice because it gives you that crisp look without asking you to drag out the ironing board. Bless it. I’m wearing a medium in the shirt and a size 8 in the jeans.
The Straight Leg Jeans keep the outfit classic, while the Raffia Tote and bold Necklace add a summery feel. This is a good example of how accessories can make white look intentional instead of plain.
Add Print or Texture If All-White Feels Too Stark
If you like the idea of wearing white but don’t want to look too plain, add print or texture. A floral sweater, textured top, or embroidered blouse gives you the freshness of white with a little personality.
The Ella Short-Sleeve Floral Sweater has enough detail to make the outfit feel special, but it still feels easy and wearable. I’m wearing a size 1 in the sweater and a size 8 in the Kut From The Kloth Jeans.
Petite White Pants Can Look Fresh and Polished
White pants are not just for tall women. Petite women can absolutely wear them, too. The trick is paying attention to proportion.
These Petite Millennium Pants with eyelet hem are a pretty option because the detail at the bottom adds interest without overwhelming the outfit. The Short Flutter Sleeve Poplin Top keeps everything light and feminine.
A slightly cropped or ankle-length white pant can be especially flattering on petite frames because it shows a little ankle and keeps the outfit from feeling heavy.
Relaxed White Linen Feels Effortless in Summer
Relaxed linen pants are a summer favorite for a reason. They are breezy, comfortable, and give that coastal look without requiring a beach house. Although, if someone wants to hand me the keys to one, I will not argue.
The Cinched Flutter Sleeve Blouse adds shape, and the Linen Pull-On Pants keep the outfit comfortable. I like that the blouse has feminine detail but still feels simple.
When wearing loose white pants, make sure the fabric has enough weight so it drapes instead of clinging. Thin white linen can be beautiful, but it needs lining or the right undergarments.
What About Stains, Thin Fabric, and See-Through White Clothing?
This is the part we need to talk about because it is the reason many women skip white altogether. White clothing is gorgeous, but not all white clothing is created equal.
First, fabric matters. Look for white denim, twill, cotton poplin, textured cotton, ponte, lined linen, or thicker gauze. These fabrics usually give you better coverage. If you can see the pocket lining clearly through white pants, that is usually a red flag.
Second, check the lighting. Something can look fine in a dressing room and then become a whole different story outside in bright sunlight. Before you wear white out the door, stand near a window or step outside with a hand mirror. It may feel silly, but it is better than discovering the issue in the church parking lot.
Third, undergarments matter. Nude-for-you underwear is usually better than white underwear under white clothing. White under white can actually show more. Seamless styles also help keep everything smooth.
Fourth, stains are part of life. I don’t avoid white because of stains, but I do try to be smart. I keep a stain remover pen or wipe in my bag, especially when I’m traveling or eating anything involving tomatoes, mustard, or chocolate. Basically, all the fun foods.
And finally, don’t buy white clothing that makes you nervous from the start. If the fabric feels too thin, the pockets show, or you keep tugging at it, leave it behind. A good white piece should make you feel polished, not like you need to stand perfectly still all day.
Crisp White Pants and Shorts That Look Polished
White pants are one of the easiest ways to look instantly pulled together during the summer. They brighten every outfit and pair beautifully with almost any color.
These Talbots Wide Ankle Heritage Twill Pants are such a chic option because the wide ankle silhouette feels modern and flattering. I especially love white pants paired with simple neutral tops, striped tees, or lightweight linen shirts. The twill fabric also helps white pants feel more substantial, which is exactly what I look for.
These Talbots Linen Shorts are exactly the kind of shorts I love wearing in the summer. Linen always looks relaxed and expensive, and longer shorts feel much more comfortable and flattering than super-short styles. Pair them with a white tee, chambray shirt, or lightweight sweater and you are out the door.
White Dresses That Feel Cool and Chic
Nothing feels easier in the summer than throwing on a white dress and instantly looking polished. A white dress is one of those pieces that can be dressed up with wedges and jewelry or kept casual with flat sandals and a raffia tote.
This Quince Organic Textured Cotton V-Neck Midi Dress is gorgeous because it feels simple, timeless, and wearable. I love a textured cotton fabric because it usually gives better coverage than a thin, flat knit. Midi dresses are especially flattering because they skim the body without clinging.
I also really like this Summer Crew Neck Smocked Midi Dress casual summer days. Smocked waists are comfortable while still giving you shape, which is always a win. A defined waist can keep a white dress from feeling too boxy.
White Skirts and Palazzo Pants for a Soft Feminine Look
Flowy white pieces are everywhere this summer, and honestly, I love the relaxed elegance they bring to an outfit. They feel soft, feminine, and breezy without looking like you tried too hard.
This Quince Organic Cotton Gauze Smocked Maxi Skirt is such a beautiful piece for summer. Gauze fabric feels lightweight and breathable, and maxi skirts always create that easy coastal-inspired look. I would wear this with a tank, a linen shirt, or a simple tee.
If you prefer pants, these Ann Taylor Eyelet Easy Palazzo Pants are stunning. Palazzo pants are incredibly comfortable, and the eyelet detail makes them feel feminine and elevated. With white eyelet, I always check for lining and coverage because that detail can be gorgeous, but we don’t need to give the neighborhood a full report.
Lightweight White Tops That Go With Everything
White tops are one of the easiest ways to freshen up your wardrobe during the summer months. They work with denim, black pants, linen shorts, colorful skirts, and printed bottoms.
This Madewell Relaxed Pleat Sleeve Button-Up Shirt is exactly the kind of top I’d wear constantly. Linen-blend shirts instantly make outfits look more relaxed and expensive, and they pair beautifully with white denim, shorts, or wide-leg pants. I also like that a button-up can be worn open over a tank if you want arm coverage without extra heat.
This Simply Vera Vera Wang Shirred Blouse is such a pretty, feminine option. Tops with soft details like shirring feel flattering without being overly fussy. It is a nice way to wear white if you want something softer than a crisp button-up shirt.
Final Thoughts on Wearing White After 50
White clothing always feels timeless during the summer. It looks clean, polished, and effortlessly chic, no matter your age. The key is choosing pieces that feel comfortable, breathable, and substantial enough to give you confidence.
Don’t let fear of stains keep you from wearing something you love. Life is too short to dress like you are afraid of salsa. Keep a stain wipe handy, choose better fabrics, wear the right undergarments, and enjoy the fresh summer look.
White is not just for women who never spill. Thank goodness, because I would have been disqualified years ago.
