How to Wear Brooches Without Looking Dated

Gurls, brooches are showing up everywhere again, and this is one trend that is easy to try without changing your entire wardrobe. I’ve noticed them on jackets, dresses, handbags, and even on men’s red-carpet looks. Apparently, brooches decided they had spent enough time sitting quietly in jewelry boxes. Lol!

A brooch can add color, texture, or a little personality to an otherwise simple outfit. You can pin one to a navy dress, a denim jacket, a blazer, or even a handbag and remove it just as quickly when you want a different look.

That flexibility is one of the reasons I like them. A necklace usually stays around your neck, but a brooch can move wherever the outfit needs a little something extra.

What I Look for When Choosing a Brooch

The first thing I consider is size. A tiny brooch can disappear on a heavy blazer, while a large statement piece may overwhelm a thin T-shirt or delicate blouse. I try to match the scale of the brooch to the fabric and the area where I plan to wear it.

Weight matters just as much as size. Some brooches are surprisingly heavy, and a large pin can pull or sag on lightweight fabric. Those heavier styles usually work better on denim, wool, ponte knit, structured jackets, handbags, or thicker dresses. On delicate fabrics, I look for a lighter pin or attach it where the material is reinforced, such as near a seam, collar, or placket.

I also think about color and how much attention I want the brooch to attract. A gold or pearl style blends easily into a classic wardrobe, while enamel, crystals, and bright colors create more of a focal point. Neither is better. It simply depends on the outfit and how much personality you want the pin to add.

The clasp is another detail worth checking. I want the pin to close securely, especially if I’m attaching it to a handbag or jacket that I’ll be wearing all day. I also inspect the pin before using it on a favorite garment because a dull or rough point can snag fabric.

Finally, I consider where I will actually wear it. A beautiful brooch is not much of a bargain if it never leaves the jewelry box. Before buying one, I try to picture it on at least two or three pieces I already own.

A Simple Navy Dress Gets a Little Personality

I grabbed this gold-tone Lighthouse Brooch from Talbots and immediately added it to my navy dress. I love how such a small accessory changed the feel of the outfit. The navy background lets the gold stand out, but the combination still looks classic and understated.

The lighthouse design also gives the pin a personal, collected feel rather than making it look like I added jewelry simply for sparkle. Novelty brooches can be a fun way to show an interest, remember a trip, or start a conversation.

I placed it high on the chest, where it draws the eye toward my face and does not interfere with the buttons or waist tie. This is one of the easiest placements to try if you are not sure where to begin.

Coastal Brooches That Bring Color to an Outfit

Shell Brooch

Turquoise shell & red coral brooch

The Shell Brooch from Nordstrom combines turquoise blue, coral red, gold, and pearl-like details. There is plenty going on, so I would let it be the main accessory rather than adding a large necklace at the same time.

This would look beautiful on navy, white, turquoise, coral, or even a denim jacket. The shell and coral design makes it especially nice for summer, vacations, cruises, or anyone who loves coastal style.

Because this appears to be a larger design, I would attach it to a substantial fabric or close to a seam. It could also be pretty pinned to the corner of a woven handbag.

Embellished Butterfly Lapel Pin

My Granny Meadows always loved butterfly pins. The Embellished Butterfly Lapel Pin from Nordstrom mixes blue, green, amber, gold, and crystal accents, and I know she would have loved it. The colors give it plenty of personality, but the butterfly shape keeps it feminine and familiar.

This one would be lovely on a solid blazer, cardigan, denim jacket, or simple dress. Since it already includes sparkle and several colors, the rest of the jewelry can stay fairly quiet.

A butterfly brooch is also an easy way to bring color into an outfit if you usually wear neutrals. You do not need a bright top or patterned jacket. The pin can do that work for you.

A Playful Pin That Still Works With Basics

Boxed Gold-Tone Bees Pin

The Boxed Gold Tone Bees Pin from Belk features two bees with brown enamel and crystal details. It is whimsical, but the gold and neutral coloring keep it from feeling childish.

This would look especially nice on camel, cream, olive, navy, brown, or denim. I could also see it pinned to the lapel of a classic blazer, where the playful design would soften a more traditional outfit.

The wider shape means it needs enough open space around it. I would avoid placing it too close to a necklace, buttons, or a busy print. Let the bees have the spotlight. They seem like the demanding type anyway. Lol!

Fresh Florals That Add Dimension

Garden Set Brooch

This garden set brooch has a layered design that gives it more presence than a small lapel pin. This is the type of brooch I would use as the focal point of an outfit.

A statement piece like this works especially well on a solid dress, jacket, or sweater. Avoid placing it on top of a busy print because the details may get lost, and the outfit can start to feel cluttered.

Since layered brooches can be heavier, check the fabric before attaching one. Denim, ponte knit, boiled wool, and structured jackets usually provide enough support.

Nature-Inspired Brooches With a Little Whimsy

Dragonfly Brooch

This Dragonfly brooch is a nice alternative to flowers and butterflies. It adds interest without feeling overly sweet and can work through spring and summer.

I would pin it to a denim jacket, linen blazer, simple dress, or cardigan. A long, narrow brooch like a dragonfly can also work well placed at a slight angle rather than sitting perfectly straight.

That small adjustment can make it look more natural, almost as though it just landed there.

Classic Brooches That Work Beyond One Season

Forget-Me-Not Pearl Cameo Brooch

The Forget-Me-Not Pearl Cameo Brooch has a more traditional look, with pearl accents and a cameo-style design. This would be a beautiful choice for someone who prefers classic accessories or wants a piece that feels a little more special.

I would wear it on a blazer, cardigan, coat, or simple dress. Because the design already has several decorative elements, I would keep any necklace small or skip one altogether.

A cameo brooch can look dated when it is surrounded by too many other vintage-style details. Pairing it with modern clothing and simple jewelry keeps the look balanced.

Gold Tone Rhinestone Crystal Brooch

Gold-Tone Rhinestone Crystal Brooch

This Gold-Tone Rhinestone Crystal Brooch is a good choice when you want a little sparkle without wearing a statement necklace. The crystals catch the light, which makes it especially pretty for dinners, parties, church, or special occasions.

You do not have to save a sparkly brooch for dressy clothing, though. Pinning one to a denim jacket or a plain sweater creates an interesting mix of casual and dressy pieces.

Just make sure the fabric is strong enough to hold the weight and that the stones are secure before wearing it.

Where to Wear a Brooch

The traditional spot is on the upper left side of a blazer, dress, or jacket, but that is only one option. A brooch can be placed near the collar of a button-front shirt, at the center of a neckline, or on one side of a cardigan.

You can also use one to secure a scarf, decorate a handbag, dress up a denim jacket, or add interest to a hat. A smaller brooch can even be pinned near the cuff of a jacket or at the top of a pocket.

For an unexpected placement, try attaching one to the knot of a scarf or near the waist of a wrap dress. The important thing is to make sure it does not pull on the fabric or sit somewhere that will rub against your arm.

How to Keep a Brooch From Damaging Your Clothes

Before pinning a brooch to delicate fabric, test it in an inconspicuous area. Very fine knits, silk, chiffon, and loosely woven fabrics can snag or develop visible holes.

Attaching the pin through two layers of fabric gives it more support. You can also place a small piece of felt behind the garment to help distribute the weight, especially with a larger brooch.

Another option is to pin it through a seam, collar, lapel, or placket, where the fabric is already reinforced. Never force a thick pin through delicate material. If it resists, that is the fabric’s polite way of telling you to stop.

One Last Thing

Brooches are one of the easiest accessories to experiment with because there are no real age rules attached to them. The difference between a brooch looking dated and looking current usually comes down to styling.

Wear one brooch as the focal point, give it enough room to be noticed, and pair it with clothing that feels like you. You do not need to cover an entire jacket in pins or recreate your grandmother’s church outfit, unless that happens to be the look you love.

Start with a jacket, solid dress, or cardigan you already own and add one pin. It is a small change, but it can make an outfit feel much more personal.

Do you still have any brooches tucked away in a jewelry box, and are you ready to start wearing them again?
