How To Wear Black And Not Look Older
Every season, I seem to pick a color or two, and everything that I purchase is in that color family. This winter, my color choices seem to be black, gray, and red. My sister is probably going to be happy about my color choice, especially since she lives in those colors. But this is a big change for me since I usually gravitate toward brighter colors. One of the reasons that I don’t wear a lot of black is because it can be harsh against your skin. I think wearing a modern style helps black not to age you, and also, wearing a print with black can distract the eye. Since I have learned to go with the flow and enjoy where the ride takes me, I am embracing my dark side. Lol!
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – Bottoms
Everyone has heard that wearing black is slimming. Maybe that is true, and if it is, I want my lower half to be the area that is slimmed down. Plus, adding black to the lower half of your body will let you wear other colors next to your face. Brown and black are a great color combination, and I think the brown cashmere sweater lightens up my face and looks great with the kick flare pants.
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – Prints
Wearing prints is a great way to incorporate black into your outfit without it making you look older. Prints are fun and lively, and they add more colors to your outfit. Even though I’m wearing black and white, the outfits look brighter and more interesting. I even wore black shoes and carried a black handbag, but the look was still brighter. Experiment with prints and add some fun to your outfits.
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – V-Neck
There are times I WANT to wear black near my face. When I do, I usually will do a couple of things to help me not look older. I’ll wear jewelry to create lots of interest, I’ll wear brighter makeup to brighten my face, or I’ll wear a v-neck top. Wearing a v-neck draws your eyes to that area and helps to elongate your neck. That creates space between your face and the black top, and it also helps you to look thinner. I call this a win-win!
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – Bright Colors
Wearing bright colors next to your face is an easy way to wear black and not look older. Bright colors draw attention and brighten up the look of every outfit. I love wearing bright colors, especially in the fall and winter, as a way to brighten up a gloomy day.
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – With Statement Accessories
Everyone needs a black dress for certain occasions. One way to wear black and not look older is by wearing statement accessories. I added two statement pieces of pearl jewelry near my face that draw all the attention. Then, I added a pair of old leopard print pumps to draw attention to my feet.
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – Latest Trends
Trends are a great way to help you look younger and modern. They show that you pay attention to the latest fashions and that you aren’t stuck in a clothing loop that is outdated and frumpy looking. This bomber jacket has quickly become my favorite! I love the feel of the leather; it is buttery soft. I never thought that I would prefer a bomber jacket over my moto jacket, but I actually like it better. I think it is the casual style that looks great with pretty much everything.
How To Wear Black And Not Look Older – With A Bright Lipstick
Dull, boring, plain, dreary, and aging are words sometimes used to describe black outfits. Brightening up your face can alleviate almost all of those comments. Adding a touch more blush or a bright lipstick is the easiest and fastest way to brighten your face. I used High-Intensity Long-Lasting Lip Pencil (Dragon Girl) in this photo. I’m a black fan but do use color as I plan my outfits. Thank you for the suggestions on items of clothing to pair with black.
These are great black options! Thanks for the super tips on not looking older!!! Will definitely be implementing these. As a musician, I have to wear black not infrequently and this post is wonderful!

I LOVE every single outfit, Tania – WOW! My favorite is the Spanx dress – worth the price of admission xoxo
I love black and have lots of it in my wardrobe! I’ve never thought of pairing it with brown though so I’m going to try it. Great post! I’ve only been to the Biltmore once but loved the beautiful gardens and greenhouse.
I love wearing black and brown together! I started doing that when I noticed my Yorkie was black and brown.
Good ideas for black! thank you
Enjoyed today’s post but I really do try to steer away from black unless it’s pants. Looking for bright colors to cheer me up!!
I love black as well. I think I need to try the bright lip color as per your suggestion to avoid looking dead. LOL!!
Love the Spanx jeans!
Blessings, Julie
I love all these ideas!
Awesome ideas, Tania! You are so creative.
Yes, black with bright colors is fabulous. I was at the Biltmore several years ago with my sisters. A gurls’ trip there was a blast!
Great scripture and suggestions!
Loved all the outfits for the day Tania
You look great in all of them
Thanks for the photos and comments about black near one’s face. It’s an eye opener for me to see what you were trying to communicate. A picture truthy is worth a 1000 words .
Love the first black dress. It looks stunning on you!
Love these ideas – I think black is so classy !
Love to wear black. The leopard print heels are so cute. I need to go get the small bunny. Have a great day
Enjoyed your modeling the different ways to wear black.
You look great in all of these
We were at the Biltmore a couple of weeks ago and noticed a Chihuly exhibit is coming soon! Wish we lived closer. Love wearing black in combo with other colors!
Black is a staple in my wardrobe for sure. Love pairing it with bright colors or prints to help give it some life!
I love the black cashmere sweater! You look great in everything.
Not sure why you have been reluctant to wear black, you look fantastic in it! I find it slims me down so, while I love bright colors, you’ll still find a lot of black in my closet, too.
I’d like to see petite clothing for those of us who are 4’11”-5’1”. Thank you.
Black is my go to color. I like that you have shown us ways to make it not so harsh.
Love this post because I wear a lot of black
A simple black sheath dress has been a staple in my wardrobe for many years. I usually wear it with a pearl necklace and matching bracelet. Not terribly exciting but it works for some occasions very well.
In the photo with black blazer and the photo with the pink top you look 10 pounds thinner and younger than some of the other photos.
I really like black and white together but adding a bright color is nice also.
Hi Tania,
I am a new subscriber to your blog and also your new big fan!! It is hard for me to find clothes that fit well. I am 5’8 and about 174 lbs most of it in the top half of my body (no junk in my trunk) and thinner legs and hips. When I see you in all of these beautiful outfits, it gives me hope, inspiration and confidence to try an online orders. Usually I have to spend a lot to have a good fit and think that is due to height. I ordered one of the dresses from your link from Amazon. Fingers crossed! I have never ordered anything from Walmart. If you don’t mind me asking what is your height?
Donna, I hope you like the dress you ordered. I’m 5’6″ tall and weigh between 150-155, “usually.”
You look fabulous in everything! I have never worn black with brown, but I love it on you! Happy Tuesday❤❤❤
I love the two colors together!
I love black!
I love the black dress with the animal print pumps. So chic!
I love black because it can go from casual to chic with just a change of accessories. Definitely going to add the J.Jill dress to my wardrobe. I think it would be great with a red belt and red and black shoes. Thanks for giving your readers some great tips on making black look fantastic!
For too long, black has been a staple in my closet (because of its supposed slimming effect! LOL!) but I’m trying to incorporate some of those brighter colors. Thanks for all of these suggestions!
You look wonderful in Black!
I love to wear black- thanks for the tips!
I love these outfits on you and how modern they look. I could not wear those heels like you but you go gurl!
Black and brown, what a great idea! I was going to wear all black to the office today but now I’m going to swap out my black turtleneck for a chocolate brown one and warm the look up. Thanks for the inspiration!
you look beautiful in all these pictures but I especially love the bright pink sweater!
Good choices. I have a lot of black pants from slim straight to wide leg. I like to wear them with camel since it’s one of my colors. I like black v neck tops too. I love your leather jacket. This past year I gave myself a new leather jacket for Christmas.
My favorite color— always Black!! And you look stunning in black!!
Love wearing black! Makes me feel sophisticated! LOL
Girls trip to Biltmore sounds divine. Don’t forget the winery, their Chardonnay is one of my favorites! Cheers!
You nailed the black! Stunning!!
Great looks!
Love love that white/black wave wrap dress. Ordering that one!!
Like the brown top/black pants outfit and the A Line dress.
I wore a black top with a round neck yesterday – now I know a v-neck would have been better! Thanks!
I love your styling tips and your verse for the day!
Your hair is stunning in the last photo!
Love jewel tones, but black will always be in my closet. Thanks for showcasing these great looks! 🖤
Thank you for these important tips! I have quite bit of black in my wardrobe, but if often wear it, as you have shown, on the bottom with different colored or patterned tops. I love everything you styled.
If you love Biltmore and you read for pleasure, try Kristy Woodson Harvey’s The Wedding Veil. She is from NC. I especially love the black dress from JJill. Interesting to me that you did a post about wearing black, when most of your posts lately have been about spring. Bring on the bright colors. Warm in SC today, but getting cold again tomorrow….ugh!
You look amazing in all these outfits!!! I am so grateful that I found your page. I know NOTHING about fashion and I have been reading all your blogs. I have revamped my wardrobe and I am slowly introducing new styles. I got way too comfortable in my oversized shirts and jeans. I just realized I have a body, not the one pre-babies, but still one I should show off and be proud of. You have given me that confidence. I love your bible verses and look forward to them everyday. God Bless and ROCK ON!!!!
Yay!!! Lynn, I love this comment. We need to embrace the body we have and dress it the best that we can.
Spanx makes dresses!
I do not usually talk about religion but today’s verse is one of my favorites.
I need a dress to wear to a semi formal LA wedding in May. Suggestions appreciated
Ugh! I’ll have to think about that. I’ve got some upcoming wedding posts soon, so maybe you’ll find something in one of those.
Love brown and black together!
