HOW TO STYLE A SUMMERY OUTFIT IN THE FALL
Today is day 3 of the Now and Later series. The previous outfits have been slightly more fallish, so they were easy to style for fall. Today’s look is very summery, but it is still effortless to style it for a fall transition outfit. Someone mentioned that I simply added a denim jacket to the first look for the fall transition. Yep, that is all it took. You don’t have to go overboard when you are just starting the transition phase.
In fact, if you go too overboard with the fall items, you end up burning up as the day goes on. When we first transition into fall clothing, you only want to add a few light layers and start wearing close-toe shoes. Heavy jackets and sweaters will have you melting down before the day is out, and boots can make your feet sweat. Lol! The key is finding lightweight sweaters and jackets and adding close-toe shoes like sneakers, loafers, and mules.
Tie-dye is a pattern that is usually associated with summer. I love this tie-dye tank maxi dress, and I think it is a perfect summer dress. Because it is a tank, I wanted to wear a cardigan, but I didn’t want anything heavy. Most of the time, I don’t like buying thin items. I tend to think that thin equals poor quality. But, this cardigan is supposed to be thin since it is designed to be worn in the summer months, which tend to be on the hot side.
This white long sleeve cardigan is one that I bought last year. Here is an example of how I styled the cardigan last year with bright colors. I really liked this cardigan, so I bought it in bright pink and bright green, and I wore them several times last year. The cardigan is offered in light pink, and also in black and navy. I am wearing a medium cardigan, and it fits great.
I think that wearing a pair of Sperry Crest Vibe white sneakers with the dress is a great summer option. The sneakers would even work going into fall, and for those who don’t like to wear white after Labor Day, you can choose a navy option instead. I have worn these sneakers repeatedly since I bought them, and they are probably my favorite go-to sneaker. They run a little big, so I sized down to an 8 1/2 instead of my usual size 9.
As I mentioned earlier, I think the tie-dye print is truly a summer style. So, I can add a heavier jacket and different shoes to the look, but the look will still be more summery than some. It isn’t a matter of wearing the dress in the fall; it is more a matter of wearing it in different ways. A lightweight denim jacket works for fall, but you could also add a thicker cardigan in great fall colors. Here are a couple of examples of cardigans and jackets.
This tie-dye dress is one that I bought from Cato Fashions last week. I usually order almost all my clothing online, but I had some time to kill, so I walked into a real-life store. I was so proud of myself until I got ready to link to this dress. It is not online! UGH! It wasn’t on sale, so I never thought about it not being available, especially since I had seen a similar dress on their website. So, I guess I’ll link to several similar dresses that I found for you.
My jewelry is all in silver this time. I am wearing my favorite AVI large hoop earrings in the silvertone color and this wooden cross with embellishments from Brighton. I love the uniqueness of this necklace and that it is comprised of hand-cut Robles wood from the Philippines. This cross was inspired by the story of Empress Helena, Emperor Constantine’s mother, who, it is written, discovered pieces of Jesus’ cross.
I could have worn the Sperry Crest Vibe sneakers with the denim jacket, and it would have looked great. A boot wouldn’t look right with this dress since it is summery, so I added my close-toe espadrilles instead. These neutral espadrilles are a pair that I wear all the time. I’m wearing a size 9 in the espadrilles, and they run TTS.
If you are still in summer mode, then you will love this summery tie-dye dress. But, if you are wanting to start thinking about fall, then start looking for basic fall essential items to help you start the transition process. I wrote a post on that last week, so be sure to check that out if you haven’t already.

I love your take on Fall outfits! Thanks for the ideas,…
Are the Sperry’s color linen white?
Yes, these are white
I like both looks for going into fall. Can you show us how to do the laces on our sneakers that we don’t want to tie in a bow? I have a pair of P448’s for fall that I don’t want to tie the regular way. Your cross necklace is beautiful!
Love the dress and the lightweight cardigans – perfect for summer evenings into fall. I found the Sperry sneakers at Marshalls for $30, which is half price so I was thrilled!
I tie a knot in my tee shirt hem but never thought to tie one on a long dress. You clever gurl!
Love this on you. Very flattering!
That dress! So cute!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that dress. We don’t have that store in the Boston area. So disappointed it’s not online. 😢
Another Boston gal disappointed the store isn’t in the area.
