Do you remember hearing the term Brangelina? It was the couple’s nickname for when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were together. Today’s blog post is all about coatigans, and that word makes me think of that couple’s nickname every time. LOL! This coat/cardigan cross is a great addition to any fall wardrobe, and today we are learning all how to style a coatigan and exactly what it is. Keep reading to learn all about this trend that I’m loving this season!

What is a Coatigan?

A coatigan is a cross between a coat and a cardigan. It is typically made of a thicker, more substantial material than a traditional cardigan, such as wool or cashmere, and is designed to be worn as an outer layer. The length of a coatigan can vary from knee-length to hip-length, and it may have a collar, buttons, or pockets like a coat.

Coatigans are a great addition to any fall wardrobe for a few reasons. The most notable reason is that they offer the warmth and comfort of a coat while being lightweight and easy to wear. This makes them perfect for layering over different outfits and adding a touch of style and sophistication. I don’t know about you gurls, but I hate driving or even shopping in a big bulky coat. This style of outerwear wouldn’t feel so restricting and cumbersome if you needed to keep it on for the duration of your outing. Coatigans also come in a variety of styles, materials, colors, and prints, so there is sure to be one that suits your taste and needs.

How to Style a Coatigan

Coatigans are incredibly versatile and can be styled in a variety of ways. No matter how you choose to style your coatigan, it’s sure to become a staple in your wardrobe this fall or winter. With its comfortable and stylish design, it’s the perfect hybrid of fashion and function. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Dress it up with a skirt or dress.

In my opinion, dresses and skirts look better paired with a longer-length coat rather than a hip-length jacket. This makes a coatigan a great layering piece to wear over your sweater dresses and maxi skirts this fall.

2. Layer it over jeans.

A coatigan is the perfect layering piece for casual outfits. Pair it with your favorite jeans and a simple t-shirt for a laid-back yet stylish look. Add a pair of booties, mules, or loafers for a put-together outfit to go shopping or head to a lunch date.

3. Wear it with leggings or joggers.

If you’re looking for a comfortable and stylish outfit for running errands or lounging at home, pair your coatigan with leggings or joggers with a pair of sneakers.

The Best Coatigans for Fall 2023

Magenta Coatigan

I shared several pink items in my Nordstrom new arrivals post the other day, and several of you gurls commented that love bright pink year-round. When I saw this magenta coatigan, I just knew I had to include it! Although it comes in an array of colors, I think a hot pink coat is the perfect way to add a little color to your closet.

Hooded Sweater Coat

This cozy, chunky knit cardigan will be great for throwing over any outfit. I can see myself snuggled up on the couch in this, wearing it with joggers and a tee to run to the grocery store or styling it with booties and jeans for a casual look. It also comes in a wide selection of colors, including several gorgeous shades I’m loving for fall, like icy blue, army green, and burnt orange.

Open Front Sweater Jacket

Here’s another great cardigan coat option that I love! This one has an open front and looks like a comfier version of a blazer. It would look great with a pair of straight-leg jeans and a nice blouse or layered over a dress! This might be one that I need to try myself because it looks SO cute in the review photos.

This is a similar look to the one above but in a brighter color. If you’ve not already, check out the post on Beautiful Ways to Incorporate the Trending Color Yellow In Your Wardrobe, where I’m wearing this outfit.

Lightweight Cardigan Sweater

If you live in a warmer area of the country that can’t get away with a thicker material or you don’t need a warm outer layer, you can still rock this trend with a longer lightweight cardigan. I’m sharing this chocolate brown one because I’m loving this color for fall this year, but it’s from the Amazon Basics brand so it comes in 15 other colors! It’s at a great price point, and it gets fabulous reviews saying how comfortable it is.

Do you ever have issues with the “bottom” area stretching out in your coatigans? I want to try one, but want to be able to sit in it too!?!
