How to Find Your Personal Style After 50
Personal style, to me, isn’t about having a closet full of name brands or keeping up with every trend that pops up. It’s about knowing what makes me feel confident, put together, and like the best version of myself. And I’ll be honest… my style has definitely changed over the years!
There was a time when I looked at my closet and felt completely uninspired. I had clothes, sure, but they didn’t feel like me anymore. That’s when I realized I needed to take a step back and figure out what I actually liked to wear, what fit my life, and what made me feel good. It wasn’t about starting from scratch—it was about getting back to the heart of what I loved!
If you’ve been feeling the same way, I’ve got you! I’m going to walk you through how I found my personal style after 50 and how you can find yours, too.
How to Find Your Personal Style After 50
Step 1: Cleaning Out My Closet
This was the part I kept putting off, but when I finally got serious about finding my personal style, I knew it had to start here. I pulled everything out of my closet (yes, everything!!!) and took a hard look at what I was holding on to.
Some pieces didn’t fit anymore, some I hadn’t worn in years, and some I just didn’t like the way I used to. If I wouldn’t buy it again today, I let it go. That’s the rule I used, and it helped me make decisions without overthinking.
Letting go of clothes I’d spent money on wasn’t easy, but I reminded myself that the cost was already paid. Keeping them wasn’t going to bring that money back, and they were just taking up space and making it harder to see what I did love.
Step 2: Paying Attention to What I Actually Wore
(Medium) | Turn Lock Baguette | Similar Slingback Flat
Once I cleared out the clutter, I started noticing what I reached for again and again. My go-to jeans, a couple of easy tops, a cardigan I could throw on with anything—those were the pieces I felt good in.
I even took quick mirror selfies for a week to help me figure out which outfits I really liked. That helped me spot patterns in my style. I realized I liked clothes that were classic with a little bit of fun… maybe a leopard flat, a statement necklace, or a pop of color in my bag.
Step 3: Finding Inspiration (Without Trying to Copy Anyone)
I spent some time scrolling Pinterest and saving outfits that caught my eye. I wasn’t looking for exact outfits to copy. I just wanted to see what I naturally gravitated toward.
It turns out I love clean lines, structured handbags, a great pair of jeans, and pieces that are comfortable, but still look polished. I’m drawn to feminine details, but I don’t like anything fussy. I also noticed I tend to like a soft color palette of neutrals more than I thought, and a little color here and there.
That helped me feel more confident in choosing pieces that truly reflect my personality.
Step 4: Putting My Style Into Words
After I looked at everything I’d saved and noticed what I was wearing, I came up with three words that described my personal style: fun, comfortable, and polished.
If you try this, just ask yourself: How do I want to look and feel in my clothes? Do you want to look modern, relaxed, bold, feminine, natural, or refined?
Picking a few words helped me stay focused. When I’m shopping or trying to put an outfit together, I can ask myself: Does this feel like one of my words? If it doesn’t, I move on.
Step 5: Finding My Outfit Formula
Every woman has a few outfits she feels best in, and I’m no different. Once I realized that, I started building my wardrobe around what I called my “outfit formulas.”
For me, it might look like:
- Jeans + tee + blazer + flats
- Ankle pants + soft sweater + loafers
- Midi dress + denim jacket + sandals
These combos made getting dressed so much easier because I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel every morning. I just use different pieces within the same formula and add a few accessories to switch things up.
Step 6: Filling in the Gaps (On Purpose)
Once I had my formulas figured out and my closet cleared, I made a list of what I was missing. I didn’t go on a shopping spree. I just looked for a few pieces that would make the outfits I love easier to pull together.
I added versatile tops, neutral sandals, and crossbody bags that went with almost everything. The key here was shopping with intention—not buying things just because they were on sale, but choosing items that really fit my style. And don’t forget to shop your own closet first. You might have exactly what you need already.
And let me tell you—this part was a lot more fun when I knew what I was looking for!

Step 7: Giving Myself Room to Grow
This might be the most important step of all. I gave myself permission to change my mind. Just because I said my style was “fun, comfortable, and polished” didn’t mean I couldn’t try a bold print or a trendy sneaker now and then.
I learned to trust myself and not worry about what anyone else thought. If something makes me feel good when I wear it, that’s all that matters.
A Few Tips That Helped Me Find My Personal Style
If you’re trying to figure out your own personal style after 50, here are a few things that helped me:
- Basics are worth investing in. A good pair of jeans and a well-fitting bra go a long way.
- Accessories can change everything. Add a belt, a scarf, or a fun necklace and watch your outfit come to life.
- Fit matters more than trends. I’d rather wear something that flatters my shape than something that’s “in.”
- Don’t wait for a special occasion. Wear your favorite pieces now.
- Give yourself grace. Finding your style is a journey, not a one-time decision.

🙂 Found it! Cleaning out the clutter, that’s a hard thing for me!
Love them al. ! Found it too!
🙂 Found it !!! Love all your information. Info like this helps me clean out my closet. Thanks!
🙂 found it.
Great post. It is a great thing to clean out your closet. I have tried to do it one fell swoop but needed to do it several times. I still have more to do but I’m getting there. It’s very interesting to see how my personal style has changed.
I found my style words a couple of years ago, and they definitely keep me on track. I use comfortable and fit as basic guidelines. (Life is too short to be uncomfortable or frumpy!) Given that baseline, my style words are classic (timeless), minimalist (no fuss or frills or small prints), effortless (never look like I tried too hard). I also have 3 or 4 shirts or jackets that are in largish, abstract patterns for the every now-&-then I’m feeling artsy or edgy. Thanks for the post…a great reminder to stay true to “me.”
I found it Luv your website🥰
Thanks!
I think I have settled into my own style over the last 3 years or so. Understanding my best colors and defining my style type (the three words like you have) has really helped. I’m working on creating a closet where I wear/use every single item. 🙂
🙂 Cleaning out the closet is something that I need to do. Thanks for tips, it should make it a little easier to decide.
Excellent post! I have begun a MAJOR purge of my closet so this is helpful. I have been guilty of keeping things because of what i paid or because it was an impulse buy that really doesn’t flatter my body, and i may wear it “someday “.
I think that is how a lot of us feel.
Thank you so much Tania for sharing your tips. I will definitely use them as I clean out my closet & try to go for a more polished look.
😊 good post.
😊found it! Love the classic yet casual looks!
🙂
Great blog and suggestions!
🙂 Very good advice. I did clean out my closet of lots of larger clothes that no longer fit me, but I did not empty the entire closet. I’m not quite ready for that..yet.
🙂 Great ideas, thanks!
🙂 I enjoyed this post. Sometimes you need a push to update what works and delete was doesn’t.
Totally agree with finding ourself.
Easier to do with age!
Found it!
🙂 What a helpful post! Thank you!
😊. Good pointers! Thanks for this.
I really found this post very helpful. I especially like the way you reminded us to give ourselves a little grace- that it’s ok to change our mind or mix it up a little.
I change my mind all the time. If you are unsure about an item, put it in a separate “maybe” pile. Give it a couple of weeks, then go through that pile again. You’ll probably have a better idea if it stays or goes.
😊 Great post! I love the blue polo dress. I wear a lot of skorts in the summer. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
😀 found it. I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. I sometimes buy because it’s on sale and regret it later because it was based on price not on how it made me feel or how it looked on me. Shopping your closet is another valuable tip. I really enjoy today’s article. Thank you!
😀. This is a great post! Thanks, Tania!
Clean out the closet is my goal. 🙂 found it
😊 I enjoyed this post today. So many times in the past, I’ve purchased clothing just because it was a great bargain (or so I thought). Most of the time these items would barely get worn. You have a great point about finding our style and what works for us. I’m retired now so I don’t really need to buy work clothes. Our church is pretty casual also. I think I would be ahead to buy quality pieces that will last for my style now.
It is only a bargain if you get your wear out of it. There are times when a pricer item ends up being the bargain if you wear it a lot.
Found it 🙂 Thanks for the helpful tips!
😊 I tend to look at my clothes towards the end of each season and donate anything that I haven’t worn.
😄. A very informative post! Now to just follow through!
😊 Love the ruffle blouse and white pants.
:). Love the hot pink ruffle shirt!!
Found it!
😊 I appreciate your encouragement to go through my closet! We are transitioning from winter to summer here. (We only have a handful of spring days.) I have been dragging my feet on this task! Thanks again for the words I needed to get started.
Thank you for sharing your journey for personal style. I am working on mine
😀I do wish sometimes you would reply to our emails. My question is how long should you keep a outfit. I was looking in my closet and have outfits i wore to my Goddaughters 8th grade graduation. And she is know in the 10th grade
Stella, I try to reply when time permits. There is no timeline for outfits. I have a few pieces that I wore when Joe and I were dating, and we will be married 39 years in November.
😊
You are so right. I wear what is comfy (and brings joy) and I don’t worry about designer labels.
🙂love this post! So helpful!
🙂found it. And totally agree. Clean out the closet. Just need inspiration!
🙂
Good information to follow
😊Found it. Love the bright top with the white jeans. Color looks good on you.
😊Great advice.

The summer ruffled sleeve top is absolutely gorgeous!
🙂 . This is one of your best emails Your thoughts and ideas are very helpful
🙂 i have been losing a lot of weight so I am cleaning out my closet and reinventing my wardrobe. this tips are very timely and appreciated!
🙂 I need to clean out my closet and start from scratch.
🙂 found it. Love the short sleeve flowered top for summer.
😊 I find it so difficult to state my style in three words. Fun is one and polished is another, but the third is the sticking point. I like classic clothes, but feel a little boring sometimes. I add a trendy piece to my wardrobe each year, IF the trend suits my coloring and frame, so trendy wouldn’t be one of my words either. I’m mostly casual, but don’t want to always look as if I’m dressing for a day of sitting on the sofa or working in the yard. I really need to work on that third word!
Melanie, I wrote down as many descriptive words as I could to describe my style. Then, I started narrowing it down.
🙂 Can you come clean MY closet now??
LOL!!!
🙂 Love the touch of color with the dress! looks elegant yet casual….that’s the style I’m always trying to achieve. Thanks!
Love your style. Great suggestions
I just love all your looks! The blue polo dress is just perfect go to for fun dress!
Found it☺️
My closet awaits me…I’ve been putting it off. I think your ideas will help me as I go through discarding older clothes. If I wouldn’t buy it again today is a great line of thinking! Thank you.
You’ll have to let me know if my suggestions helped.
😊 This is great information. I need to go through my closet and get rid of some clothes.
Another great post Tania! Loved your comment “if I wouldn’t buy it again today, I let it go.” That was a real eye opener for me and I’ll definitely ask myself this question as I tackle my closet. That pink /red ruffled blouse looked amazing on you. We have a similar style and I get a lot of style ideas from you. Thanks!
🙂 Good advice with specific steps.
Found it! Great article, Tania!
😄 Thanks for this great post that’s filled with awesome advice. The biggest thing that has helped me with my closet is filling it with only the colors that I look best in.
I try to buy the colors that I like. Then, when I’m creating outfits, they seem to play well with each other.
😊The Sam Edelman animal flats are adorable!!!
They are one of my favorites!
😃great advice
😊I love your advice! If you have an item in your closet that you wouldn’t buy today, get rid of it!
Every once in a while I can come up with good advice. Lol!
🙂 Wow! This is one of my favorite posts! You articulated finding your style so well. I’m going to be intentional and work through the steps. Thanks for the inspiration!
Putting the outfit formula on a post-it and putting in my closet.
I did the 3 word style back in October. I am so not a fashionista. Mine are:
1) Realistic — Comfortable (has to be functional in my everyday world)
2) Aspirational — Modern or not frumpy
3) Emotional — Effortless/relaxed
#2 had me going in a couple directions with artistic or boho but practical. I think these would work better with accessories or flowy skirts.
I really need to clean out my closet and get rid of things I am hanging on to “just because” and determine what my personal style is. Good post.
Found it!
Thanks for all the information!
😀found it! Like these tips! Have been looking for “ my style “ since I retired!
🙂 I do have a hard time letting go of clothes I really don’t wear. I keep thinking one day I will wear that, meanwhile I lose sight of what is in my closet because there is too much in there! I like what you said about the cost already being paid and I think if I am not wearing it maybe someone else can.
I have cardigans that are out of style now but I love them, should I save them, they may come back in style or just go ahead and get rid of them? They are the longer style of cardigan.
I do keep items that I like and that looks good on me, even if they aren’t the latest style. That is where the “wear what makes you feel good” comes into play. The style police won’t be coming after you, so wear what you like.
🙂 Love the T-shirt dress.
🙂 You and I share similar styling and I also have been purging my closet.
I have realized that I like more casual looks these days but my closet is full of more tailored items, most of which I rarely wear. Thanks for your inspiration.
Here in the Pacific Northwest we are finally seeing some sun!!
🙂 The polo dress looks so comfortable with tennis shoes.
😀 Helpful advice on finding personal style. Getting rid of what we don’t wear is important but difficult to do.
🙂 Found it! Love the black dress.
🙂 Great tips!
🙂 Jjill has my go to jeans
😊 I love this post! It’s so true on finding your own style. Since I’m getting older my gatherings and social calendar has changed to a more casual setting. It’s hard to get rid of my fancy clothes that I have spent a lot of money on. But I never wear them.
Maybe you could give them to someone you know that would put them to good use.
I really appreciate this post!
Every ‘stage’ of my life’s journey requires a strategic review of my wardrobe.
Going through my favorite store’s catalog gives me a picture in hand to pull together the looks I love, list purchases I need to make and bless someone else with my cast offs!
😊 I definitely have to clear out my closet and just keep what I usually wear all the time.
This was very interesting and helpful.
Found it! Great advice!
😊. I like your Spring Fashions
🙂 Thanks for all the good information. I have been putting off my closet clutter cleaning and I know now that I have to do it.
These are terrific suggestions, Tania. Thank you! 🙂
Great post! I did this exercise a few years ago, but I don’t think I was honest with myself about how I really lived. I need to refocus and start over. Time to clean out the closet!
Thanks!
It is hard. What I like and what I wear can be completely different things.
🙂
I think personal style is important. If you feel good about yourself in what you are wearing, you will look good, too!
🙂 I like to wear jeans and tops.I may need to try a blazer as well!
🙂
Thanks for the great tips. I always do better with a written plan.
🙂 great advice!
😊. First of all your daughter’s painting was beautiful! I loved all the texture and details, she is quite talented. I too have been cleaning my closet and it is tough getting rid of certain things especially pricey items!! You hit the nail on the head when you said ( the money has already been spent).
found it
Found it. 🙂 love these.
🙂 Found it! I am making one of my short term goals, is to decide my current style, while I am cleaning out my closet. Thank you for all the inspiring outfits!
🙂 I like your suggestion to not wait for a special occasion. Wear your favorite pieces now. I’ve been trying to do this more.
I do this with my jewelry too. Don’t save it, enjoy it.
Found it 😊
Loved this post .. so many great suggestions. Now just need to empty my closet & get started!
🙂 I really enjoyed this post. I liked wear you favorite pieces now.
Great post, Tania. Good advise regarding new purchases. I’ll save this one!

Found it!
You look great in everything!
I’m a fan of the polo shirt dress 🙂 a great option instead of shorts 😉
Found it 🙂 love the VOILE MIDI DRESS
Great post! I wear scrubs to work, so I kind of obsess on clothes…I, like you, have basic pieces that I build around. Its every hot in late spring and summer where I live, so it’s mainly dresses for me. I do have a rule when I buy something new…something leaves my closet. Happy Monday and Happy Holy Week ❤️🙏🏻✝️
Alison, I tried to do that rule, but I failed miserably. 🤣
😀 Found it!
I really enjoyed this post. I need to work on my closet.
😊
Finding my personal style has made a huge difference in my closet! And ease of getting dressed and feeling good about myself.
😊Thanks for this blog. So helpful. I love a white shirt!
🙂 Found it
😊. You have me motivated to go through my closet now.
🙂 Great ideas to ponder.
😊Great article, thanks!
FOUND IT🙂! Tania, I love your advise on finding your own style. I am an impulse buyer and I often buy something that looks great on a model but doesn’t really suit me. I think we all have things in our closets that just don’t work but we just keep them “in case”. Time for me to take your advice and determine just what my style is! Thanks for the nudge
🙂 I have never taken everything out of my closet but do cull out every season but today I am going to take everything out! I do have lots that I haven’t worn but keep – out they go I hope! Thank you for the encouragement that finally has sunk in.
😁
Really great tips for finding your style.
Found it!
My “project” is to shop my closet!
🙂 Great advice! My fave was wearing what you feel good in!
😊on porch fan!
I am roughly the same style – classic with a twist. You are much braver with color than I am though!
I love wearing color, but I’ve found myself reaching for neutrals more and more.
This is such great advice! Especially loved the “if I wouldn’t buy it again today, I let it go” advice. What a simple rule to really help sift through our closets.
Found it! 🙂 I have limited closet space, so cleaning out my closet twice a year is important. We have a consignment close to were I live. I have taken clothing items there to sell. I get a few dollars back and I usually end up spending it at that store. Many items I have purchased have been fill-in items – tees, blouses, yoga pants, etc. BTW: I just purchased my second Wrangler denim jacket that you have featured. This time I purchased the pink shade, perfect for spring. Love that jacket!
I have that jacket in 2 colors, too.
🙂I have a hard time letting go of clothes.
🙂 Started purging my closets of clothes that are too big on me – lost some weight (yippee!) but am not at my goal weight yet. It’s been really hard to let go of clothes I’ve really liked wearing but no longer fit. It’s even harder to buy a few items that fit now, but will they fit next year?
Such a good post, Tania! You helped me define my three words, modern, fun and relaxed.
Those are great words!
Found It! Great post….I need to give myself a guideline rather than just shopping randomly and buying something because it looks cute but not thinking about how it will work for me. I have so many clothes but lots I’m not wearing…need to pass on to someone that will actually wear them..
😊 Thank you for some kind of guidance. I think I am honed in on my style I really is just getting rid of the old clothes I dread!
🙂 I just went through my closet last week. Got rid of a lot of stuff I was keeping but still not liking or wearing. I think taking photos is a good idea. For me I need to take photos when I wear an outfit that I really like so I can remember what pieces I put together!
😊Great post Tania….”Give yourself Grace” and “ Give yourself room to Grow”….I needed these reminders not just for my closet or clothing choices 😉
~Lisa~
Great tips! I need to weed the closets. Found it 🙂
Thank you for your “How to Find Your Personal Style” article. I definitely have pieces that I thought I liked but continue to hang in the closet. This will help me finally get the closet cleaned out (with less guilt).
Excellent insight, thank you Tania!
Today’s post hit home for me today! As a retired teacher over 60, I had to evaluate my personal style. Your website has inspired me to look at different ways of styling clothing to be flattering on the body and age appropriate. Thank you! 🙂
I am 73 and my style is me. I attended a fashion show/luncheon last week and I wore a lovely navy blue dress (Ralph Lauren) with graduated length pearls and I carried a canvas bag with painted blue tulips on it from WHBM last year, a pair of tan patent peep toe wedges. I felt pretty, “put together” and occasion-appropriate. It took 73 years, but I know who I am and what flatters me and my 5’ 10” frame. I’m always the tallest woman in the room and that’s okay. I’m happy with me. I like me. It took a long time to get here. Trends are for other, perhaps younger gals. I’m me. I know you know what I mean, Tania.
😊
Thank you for this post! I’ve struggled with my closet and this is so helpful!
🙂
What a great article!
I love the idea of taking selfies of what you’re wearing for a while and the idea of the formula.
Your style definitely resonates with mine!
Thank you for this one!!!
You will find that taking a photo is different than looking in the mirror.
🙂 good description of your style. I need to clean out my closet too!
🤭Yes, I so need to do this! I can’t find what I’m looking for in my closet, need a clean out! Or a bigger closet! Ha!
Found it🙂 and I’m so glad I found you. Thank you for your wonderful information . I love your style.
🙂still trying to find my personal style. Love this post. Thank you
😉 Found it!
Love posts that help us focus on feeling our best and trusting our judgement! You hit this one out of the ball park!
Diane
Found it. I love this post, it gives me a direction of what I might want my style to be.
🙂 It’s amazing the clothes we hang on to. Thanks for these tips.
😊 My young teen granddaughter was in my closet one time and informed me that I had coastal grandma clothes (a lot of linen) and some preppy mixed in! I started looking and she was right!😂 Love todays helpful post!
Love all the tips about finding our style! I am with you about my closet being full and not being able to let go of the clothes I thought I loved! Found the smiley face!
Have a blessed day!
😀 Now I have to clean out my closet!
🙂 Great post! I also find that I have become more brand specific when adding pieces to my wardrobe.
Purchasing from a certain brand helps with sizing issues.
: )
good suggestions on finding your personal style
😀 You’ve inspired me to start cleaning out my closets!
😀! I completely agree with you this is exactly what I have done for years. I follow these steps you state above other than, I only buy cool tone colors. I am a winter/cool and I noticed those are the clothes I reach for. Also I am a petite and only buy petites. My formula is Classic, sophisticated, cool tones, petite, silver accessories. I wrote my formula on a card and taped it inside my closet so I can referr to it when I get dressed. 1. Base top pants/jeans. 2. Add a layer, cardi, jacket, blazer or vest. 3. Jewerly 4. Accessories scarf, purse, hat, or belt. 5. shoes, heel, flat, loafers, or boot or something on trend (sneaker) I love your blog and love this post!!
FOUND IT! 🙂 I Love how you really know your style(s) and look so gorgeous and comfortable in everything you wear!! Thanks for sharing your tips! I agree a good pair of jeans is always worth investing in!
My problem is that I like everything. 🤣
😊 Thanks for the inspiration and tips. You’ve inspired me to clean out my closet which is long overdue!
😊
Great advice for finding your personal style. Like you, I tend to gravitate to jeans, tee shirt and a blazer or jacket as my most frequent casual outfit formula.
☺️ I love your style, especially the ‘fun’ part.
🙂 Fit is most important, not the size on the tag!
found it!
love the polo dress, nice and simple.
Found it!
I love dressing up for work. Fortunately we can wear capris and we are definitely business casual. I was looking at my closet this weekend, and apparently I was (am) really in to the ruffle sleeves! Still love them!
😊
I agree about not following the trends. That is how I feel about wide leg cropped or ankle pants. Not a fan so won’t be buying any just because they’re the style.
😀 didn’t find it, nice flowers & outfits!
😃 it is interesting how your style can change/evolve. I’ll have to consider my 3 words
Mine has changed over the years and continues to evolve.
🙂 Great suggestions on how to find your personal style.
😀
I enjoyed both of the posts today. I really liked the combination of the white shorts and sweater vest.
😊love the Viole midi dress
:)our styles are very similar that’s why I enjoy your blog so much.I also shop at the same stores.
😊
I just cleaned out winter items that I haven’t worn in a long time, but I found myself holding on to things I thought I “might” wear.
Your tips will help me to take the process deeper.
Thank you!
It is hard to let go of something we like, but don’t wear.
🙂 I thank you for the clean out closet tips! I needed help:)!
I love hearing about your visits to your parents home. Do they still live in the house you grew up in?
No, they live in a house my dad built several years ago.
🙂 I love that black dress.
😊I just got done cleaning out my closet and chose the styles that feels good on me. Thanks for sharing your blog. I got rid of a lot of clothes.
😀great advice!
🙂
This was right on point ! I have been wondering lately how I seemed to lose my personal style to comfort. I also appreciated your comment that it’s okay to get rid of clothes you don’t wear – not always easy but definitely something to work towards for me !
Thanks for the inspiration !
My DIL and I were just talking the other day about how comfort is playing a huge role in our wardrobes.
🙂 the cropped cardigan with jeans look is my style!
🙂 Love the tips (hate the idea of emptying my closet) lol
I hear you!
🙂 I agree basics are worth investing in
