3 Comfortable Fall Outfits for Days You Don’t Want to Wear Jeans
Hi friends, it’s Stephanie, Tania’s daughter-in-law! I love a good pair of jeans as much as anyone, but sometimes I just don’t want to wear them. Maybe I’m going to be sitting for several hours, running errands all day, or I simply want something a little softer around the waist. Surely I’m not the only one. Lol.
That’s why I wanted to try a few outfits built around comfortable pants instead of denim. I’m 5’3″, so you’ll also be able to see how these pieces work on a petite frame. None of these outfits feel overly casual, though. That was important to me because I still want to look polished even when comfort is high on my list.
These three looks are very different, too. One is a matching set that could easily be dressed up, another uses chocolate brown and a soft neutral for a classic fall combination, and the last one brings in some color and a pretty lace detail.
If your jeans are getting a little too much attention lately, here are three fall outfits without jeans to try instead.
A Monochromatic Set That Does All the Work for You
There is something nice about a matching set because half of the work is already done for you. You don’t have to stand there wondering which top goes with which pants, and wearing the same color from head to toe gives the outfit a long, clean line.
This Two-Piece Cap Sleeve Top and Wide-Leg Pleated Pants comes as a set, and I’m wearing a medium. The top has a relaxed shape with cap sleeves and a longer length, while the pants have a wide leg with vertical pleating that adds interest without needing a print.
Since the clothing is fairly simple, I used the accessories to give the outfit more personality. The Colorful Chunky Necklace and Chunky Acrylic Bead Earrings bring some contrast near my face, and the espresso Genuine Leather Block Heels make the outfit feel dressier.
This is one of those outfits that could go in several directions depending on your shoes and accessories. With heels and jewelry, I could see wearing it to dinner, church, or an event where you want to look nice without putting on a dress. Swap the heels for flats, loafers, or even a sleek sneaker, and it becomes much more casual.
The matching top and pants create one continuous line instead of visually cutting the body into sections, which is especially nice on my 5’3″ frame. I also like the contrast between the relaxed clothing and the more substantial jewelry. It keeps the outfit from looking too plain.
And because it is already coordinated, this would be an easy option for traveling. One hanger, one outfit, and considerably less staring into a suitcase asking yourself why you packed six tops and nothing that goes with them. Lol.
Chocolate Brown Pants With a Soft Neutral Cardigan
Chocolate brown is everywhere for fall, but you don’t have to pair it with other dark colors. I really like it with a softer neutral like the apricot shade of this cardigan because the combination feels warm and seasonal without making the entire outfit dark.
I’m wearing the Springrain Lightweight Cropped Knit Cardigan in a small. The shorter length works well with the wider-leg silhouette of the pants because it doesn’t overwhelm my frame. I also like the elbow-length sleeves for early fall, when it looks like sweater weather outside but the thermometer clearly did not get the memo.
The Abonlen Wide Leg Pants are also a small. They have a pull-on waist with a drawstring, which gives this outfit a much more relaxed feel than traditional trousers.
I finished the look with the same Chunky Acrylic Bead Earrings and Mary Jane Ballet Flats. The flats add a feminine detail without competing with the outfit, and this is the kind of combination I could easily wear for errands, lunch, traveling, or any casual day when I want comfort but still want to look put-together.
A Petite Styling Tip for Wide-Leg Pants
If you’re petite and worried that wide-leg pants will overwhelm you, pay attention to the proportions of the top. You don’t necessarily need something tight or tucked all the way in. A top that ends closer to the waist or upper hip can give the pants room to drape without creating too much fabric from head to toe.
That is one reason I like the cardigan with these pants. The shape still feels relaxed, but you can see enough of my waistline to give the outfit some definition.
Rose Lace-Trim Pants for a Prettier Take on Casual
This outfit proves comfortable pants don’t have to be boring.
The Wyeysyt Wide Leg Lace Trim Cropped Pants immediately caught my attention because of the color, but it is the lace along the hem that makes them different from a basic pair of pull-on pants. I’m wearing a small.
Since the pants already have plenty going on, I kept the top simple with the PRETTYGARDEN Short Sleeve Ribbed Knit T-Shirt in a small. The chocolate brown balances the brighter rose color and makes the whole combination feel much more like fall.
The top is more fitted than the other two tops in this post, which also helps balance the volume of the wide-leg pants. I added the Mary Jane Ballet Flats, and the woven-looking texture of the shoe adds another small detail without fighting with the lace.
This would be a fun outfit for lunch with friends, a casual dinner, a fall festival, or one of those warm autumn days when a heavy sweater would have you regretting your decisions by noon.
Don’t Put Away All Your Bright Colors Just Because It’s Fall
Fall wardrobes don’t have to be completely brown, camel, burgundy, and olive. I love those colors, but adding something brighter can make the clothes you already own feel different.
The trick here is pairing the brighter rose pants with chocolate brown. That deeper neutral grounds the color and makes it feel appropriate for the season. You could use the same idea with rust and navy, teal and chocolate, or even a brighter green with camel.
What to Wear Instead of Jeans in the Fall
If jeans are your default, you don’t need to completely change the way you dress. Just replace the denim with a comfortable pair of pants and keep the rest of your outfit familiar.
A cardigan with relaxed pants and flats works almost anywhere you’d normally wear jeans. A matching set is an easy option when you want to look a little more polished, and a pair of pants with an interesting color, texture, or detail can become the focal point of an otherwise simple outfit.
The biggest thing I’ve learned from trying clothes on at 5’3″ is that proportions matter more to me than following a bunch of petite “rules.” I look at where the top hits, how much volume the pants have, and what shoes help everything fall into place. If I like the way the whole outfit looks and I feel comfortable wearing it, that’s what matters.
Which Outfit Would You Wear?
I think these three outfits make a pretty good case for giving jeans the occasional day off. You can still look stylish and put-together in pull-on pants, wide legs, and softer fabrics, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
Which would you choose: the monochromatic matching set, the chocolate brown pants with the apricot cardigan, or those fun rose lace-trim pants?
