Fall 2026 Fashion Trends for Women Over 50 That Are Actually Wearable
Every season, we’re hit with dozens of new fashion trends. New colors, new prints, new jean shapes, new jackets…and suddenly we’re supposed to want all of it. Lol!
But just because something is trending doesn’t mean we’re going to like it, and it certainly doesn’t mean we have to wear it.
I love seeing what’s new each season, but I’m much more interested in the trends that I can actually work into the clothes I already own. I’m not starting over with a brand-new wardrobe every fall, and I’m pretty sure you aren’t either!
So, instead of showing you every fall 2026 trend that’s coming down the runway or showing up in stores, I’m concentrating on five that I think are wearable and easy to incorporate into an existing wardrobe.
We’re talking chocolate brown, dark-wash denim, rich blues, zebra print, and plaid jackets. Some might be new to you, some you may decide aren’t for you at all, and some may already be hanging in your closet.
That’s the great thing about trends. We get to pick and choose which ones deserve an invitation into our closets.
This post has been updated for 2026 with current recommendations and links for a better reader experience.
What Are the Fall 2026 Fashion Trends?
There are a LOT of trends showing up for fall 2026, and I’ll be the first to tell you that I won’t be wearing all of them. Some are fun to look at on a runway or on someone else, but that doesn’t mean they need to come home with me. Lol!
The colors I’m noticing most are chocolate and espresso brown, burgundy, olive green, rich blue, and even chartreuse if you love a brighter pop of color.
I’m also seeing plaid jackets and blazers, zebra and leopard prints, suede jackets and accessories, dark-wash denim, wide-leg and relaxed straight-leg jeans, and chunky or textured sweaters.
Scarves are showing up with everything from sweaters to jackets, which might be one of the easiest trends to try because you may already own one.
Shoes are getting interesting too. Suede is everywhere I’m looking, along with moccasins, boat shoes, kitten-heel boots, pointed-toe flats, and sleek sneakers. Some of those might take a little convincing for me. Lol!
The important thing to remember is that trends are suggestions, not assignments. You don’t need to wear every one of them, and you certainly don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe.
Here are the five fall 2026 trends I think are easiest to work into a wardrobe you already love.
How to Wear Zebra Print This Fall
Zebra print can sound a little wild, but it’s much easier to wear when you treat it like an accent instead of letting it take over the whole outfit. That’s what I did here.
I kept the sweater and skirt in the same brown color family and let the zebra boots add the interest. They’re noticeable, but they aren’t screaming for attention.
If you’re not ready for zebra boots, start smaller. This Calf Hair belt is a perfect way to include a little animal print. Add it to a pair of jeans and a sweater, and you’re all set without feeling like all eyes are on you.
Try a zebra blouse with dark-wash jeans, wear a zebra sweater or vest with simple black or brown pants, or add a zebra handbag or belt to an outfit you already wear.
You don’t need much.
I’m especially liking the brown-and-cream zebra prints I’m seeing this fall. They’re softer than traditional black and white and look especially pretty with chocolate brown, camel, cream, and denim.

How to Wear Brown This Fall
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much brown in the stores, gurls. Chocolate, espresso, caramel, camel…you name it, I’m seeing it. And if you bought brown last fall, good news. Keep right on wearing it.
Brown is one of those trends that doesn’t require much of an adjustment. If you normally reach for black, try substituting chocolate brown once in a while. You don’t have to go head-to-toe brown either.
One reason I’ve enjoyed wearing it is that it works with so many of the other colors I already own. Cream and camel are easy choices, but chocolate brown also looks beautiful with burgundy, olive green, denim, and rich blue.
Even something as simple as a white shirt and dark-wash jeans can feel different when you add a brown belt, handbag, or pair of shoes.
If brown tends to wash you out when it’s close to your face, don’t force it. Wear the color farther away from your face in your pants, shoes, handbag, or belt, and choose one of your better colors for your top.

How to Wear Rich Blue This Fall
I usually think about brown, burgundy, olive, and other earthy colors when fall rolls around, so I’m enjoying seeing these richer blues mixed in this year. Cobalt, sapphire, and other saturated blues are a great choice if you want fall color but don’t necessarily love wearing all of the traditional autumn shades.
They’re also incredibly easy to wear. Pair a rich blue sweater with dark-wash jeans, a blue blouse with chocolate brown pants, or a blue jacket over a simple ivory or white top. I especially like blue with brown this fall.
It isn’t the first color combination everyone thinks of, which may be why it looks so fresh. You can also ease into the combination with a blue sweater, jeans, and brown shoes or a handbag.
And don’t overlook pieces you already own. A blue sweater that has been in your closet for several years doesn’t suddenly become “new,” but pairing it with this season’s brown accessories or dark denim can make it feel updated.

How to Wear Dark Wash Denim This Fall
Denim never really goes out of style, but the washes and silhouettes certainly change. This fall, I’m seeing plenty of clean, dark indigo denim, and this is one trend I think almost anyone can wear.
After several seasons filled with lighter, faded denim, a darker wash feels fresh again.
The nice thing is that you don’t have to switch to a jean shape you don’t like just because it’s trending. I’ve seen dark washes in straight-leg, wide-leg, trouser, bootcut, and flare styles. Pick the silhouette that works for your body and your wardrobe.
That’s much more important to me than wearing a particular jean style just because someone declared it “in.”

Dark denim can also look a little dressier than a heavily faded jean, which makes it useful when you want to look put-together without actually dressing up.
Add a sweater, blazer, satin shirt, or pretty blouse, and you’ve got an easy outfit. And before you buy another pair, take a look at the denim already in your closet. You may discover you already own this trend.

How to Wear a Plaid Jacket This Fall
Is there anything that says fall quite like plaid? Plaid jackets and blazers are showing up again for 2026, and this might be the easiest trend on the whole list. A plaid jacket does most of the work for you.
Since the pattern already has several colors and plenty of interest, I usually keep everything else pretty simple. Pull one color from the plaid for your top, or stick with an easy neutral such as cream, brown, black, or navy.
Then add jeans or solid pants and let the jacket be the star. And please don’t run out and buy a new plaid blazer just because plaid is trending. Look in your closet first.
If you’ve owned one for a few years and still like the fit and colors, there is an excellent chance it will look right at home this fall. That’s one of my favorite things about fashion trends. Eventually, if you keep something long enough, everybody catches back up with you. Lol!

You Don’t Have to Wear Every Fall Trend
The best part about trends is getting to pick and choose the ones that work for you. I don’t believe we’re ever “too old” to try something current, but that doesn’t mean every trend deserves space in our closets either.
If you love it, can picture yourself wearing it, and it works with pieces you already own, give it a try. If you look at a trend and immediately think, “Nope,” move right along. There will be another one coming shortly. Lol!
And remember, trying a trend doesn’t always mean buying something. Sometimes it’s simply pulling an old plaid blazer back out, wearing the dark jeans you already own, or pairing two colors together differently. I like adding one trendy piece to an outfit to make it look more modern.
