DISTRESSED JEANS AFTER 50?
A good pair of jeans are a statement piece in nearly everyone’s wardrobe. And chances are, you have a favorite pair or two that show visible signs of life like a few rips and tears. Maybe they were purchased with some frays, or they developed over time because you’ve worn them so much. But, does there come a time when we must retire our distressed jeans simply because of our age? Or, do you like distressed jeans after 50?
The photo of me above is my most pinned outfit on Pinterest, and it was from 2015. I’ve never been one to let my age stop me from dressing how I want, and you shouldn’t either. Distressed jeans can be a fashionable choice at any age, and you shouldn’t let them intimidate you. They add personality and make a look more relaxed and casual.
Ripped jeans are trendy, and we don’t have to miss out because of our age. Distressed jeans give an edgy vibe and can be stylish for those over 50 without looking like we are trying too hard. There are many easy and fashionable ways to pair ripped jeans with tops and accessories we already have that can be styled all year round.
What to look for
When shopping for ripped jeans, there are several factors to look for. First and foremost, it is crucial that the fit and length are right for you. Most brands carry a pair or two of distressed jeans, so try a pair from a brand you already know how they fit.
Regardless of how much we love a pair of jeans, the fit of the jeans can break or break an outfit. If you’re anything like me, I prefer jeans that are either bootcut or relaxed fit. When you’re shopping for a new pair of distressed jeans, don’t forget to choose a style that suits you and is something you can see yourself wearing.
The material is also important, so opt for comfortable yet flattering ones. Choose a good quality material but also has some “stretch” to it.
Less is more
How much distress should our jeans have? It is always better to go with the old adage “less is more.” Here are some examples of distressed jeans. Some have huge holes, some have only slight tears, and some only have distressing at the hem.
When looking for your perfect distressed jeans after 50, choose ones with fewer distress marks. Keeping frays at a minimum keeps us from looking as if we are TRYING to look like our younger generations (and that’s supposed to be effortless, right?) Rips from top to bottom are too overwhelming and just look sloppy. Also, choose those that are distressed primarily in the front, not back. Frays in the front give a more conservative yet carefree vibe. Rips, tears, blemishes, and frays should be appropriately placed so that they are flattering to your figure yet still stylish.
Subtle rips around the knees are a popular choice and are reserved enough to be paired with nearly any blouse or outfit. The rips should be symmetrical and proportionate and not too heavy on one pant leg or the other. Tears and distress marks placed correctly in the jean can add a bit of detail to modernize a classic style or look.
How to pair
There are many ways to wear your distressed jeans after 50, with plenty of ways to style to make you look and feel great.
- Paired with a cute loose-fitting blouse
- Blazer and cute pair of comfortable sneakers. Adding a blazer can transform your distressed style into the perfect work ensemble that adds a touch of flair to your otherwise classic and polished look.
- Pair a classic blouse or top with subtly distressed denim. This creates a classic yet stylish look that is very trendy and perfect for the office.
- A more structured top paired with low-cut booties.
- A simple t-shirt can leave an outfit feeling youthful without being overdone. This is one of my favorite looks!
When and where
Denim jeans are one of the most versatile pieces of clothing in our closets. They are durable, long-lasting, and go great with many different styles all year round. Do these same rules apply to distressed denim after 50? When is it appropriate to wear distressed denim without looking disheveled?
One thing to consider when choosing your outfit for the day is making sure that it is work-appropriate for the office. Depending on your job, some companies may have policies against ripped or frayed clothing. Be mindful of this if it applies, but don’t be afraid to express your style on days when you aren’t at work.
Distressed denim always leaves me feeling a little more relaxed and casual, yet fun and edgy. It’s great for casual lunch outings, running errands, or trips around town. Pretty much anywhere you would otherwise consider a denim option is acceptable.
Retailers to consider
Many retailers that we already love carry distressed styles that are trendy and flattering for your body type. They come in a variety of different price points, so you have all the flexibility to find the perfect pair for you.
So, should you hang up those distressed jeans forever? Heck, no! A good pair of jeans is an investment in your personal style, and distressed denim can be just as versatile and trendy no matter your age. Remember, there is no “one size fits all” approach to your personal fashion, so don’t be afraid to choose what speaks to you!

I am older than you, so I’ll move the age up a little. I agree that distressed jeans are not attractive on most women over 60. When I see them on older women, I do a double take. It just looks like they’re trying too hard to stay young.
Paulette, this is why fashion is a personal choice. I am 61 years old, and I love wearing them. Lol! If you run into me, you might do a double-take. Hahaha!
I love my distressed jeans, though subtle knee rips are the most obvious distressing my skinny jeans typically have, and I’ve come to love raw hems on my newer straight leg and kick flare jeans styles. That said, I don’t know if it’s as much an “age” thing as it is a “personal style aesthetic” thing. If your general look is not as modern as it could be (e.g. hair style/cut/color, clothing and accessories are out of style or dated), then wearing a pair of distressed jeans (or anything else that might be deemed trendy) just contradicts your personal style aesthetic and might not look right no matter what age you are.
YES! to distressed jeans! I love them! I think they are trendy, and they look great on you. We can be over 50 and trendy too! 🙂
Great post! I love slightly distressed denim. I think it can make an outfit look more modern.
Distressed jeans in my opinion are not attractive on anyone at any age. Thanks so much for your positive approach to “fashion at a certain age”
As a “ baby boomer” I have lived through many trends. You put together great looking outfits that are classic with a twist! Than you so much
Interesting post! I think distressed jeans are fun & modern BUT I just can’t get myself to spend money on ripped jeans! I *might* cut off some hems & tip toe into the trend w/raw edges 😉
I LOVE distressed clothes. When the trend first hit,I distressed most of my jeans( this was a few yrs ago).I don’t wear them quite as distressed as I did back then.Too old or not,I wear them.Love your post!
I love them on you, especially those camos, but I haven’t bought any. I did have an old pair of jeans that had a small thigh rip that I wore years ago .. maybe I was ahead of my time! 😄
