When my sister told me she was going on a cruise, I immediately began to think of all the daytime casual clothes to wear on a cruise that she’ll need. Okay, immediately I got a little jealous, but THEN I started thinking about how to help her dress for the trip. It’s her first cruise, and her go-to color is black, so I thought I’d stage an intervention, lol. She’ll need clothes that are cute, comfy, and perfect for all the fun she’ll be having! If you’re planning a cruise, too, or just want to LOOK like you’re about to enjoy a shore excursion, I’ve got you covered. I found some great pieces that fit the smart casual dress code without feeling too fussy.

Non-Iron Perfect Popover from Talbots

Well, this just screams cruise! This blouse is a lifesaver if you want to look polished without the hassle of ironing. The cotton fabric keeps you cool, and the buttons add a classic touch. This is perfect for wearing over jeans, slacks, or even skirts when you’re grabbing lunch at a specialty restaurant. The royal blue stripes are perfect for a Caribbean cruise!

Linen-Blend Striped Collared Shirt From Talbots

My sister’s vibe is comfy, and this button-down delivers while still looking chic. The linen blend makes it breathable, which is a must when you’re out sightseeing in warm weather. Roll up the sleeves for a relaxed look, or layer it over a tank top for a little extra coverage. The neutral stripes go with everything from trousers to cut-off jeans. Plus, it’s one of those pieces you can wear over and over without looking like a repeat offender.

Pull-On Chambray Shorts From Talbots

These are the kind of shorts you want when you need something easy to throw on but want to still look put-together. The pull-on style means no fussy zippers, and the chambray fabric gives them a polished but casual vibe. Pair these with a polo shirt for a cute excursion look, or wear them with flip-flops and a t-shirt for a lazy sea day.

Relaxed Chino Shorts From Talbots

Every cruise wardrobe needs a go-to pair of chino shorts. These are comfy enough for port days but structured enough for a quick lunch in the main dining rooms. The relaxed fit keeps them breezy, and they go with everything. I’d pair these with a tank top and some sandals for a simple yet chic look. These are available in a pretty teal blue and cream, and don’t tell my sister, but also in black.

No-Stain Pull-On Dolphin Hem Capri Jeans From Chico’s

Gurls, these capri jeans are MAGIC! They resist stains, which is basically a requirement when you’re eating ice cream on the deck or sipping tropical drinks. The pull-on style makes them easy to wear, and the dolphin hem gives them a fun, flirty feel. Pair these with a cute blouse in any color and comfy sneakers for a day of exploring.

Cotton Dobby Smocked Dress From Lands’ End

Nothing says vacation like a breezy casual dress. This one comes in green floral or pink, both perfect for a Caribbean cruise. The smocked bodice is comfy, and the ruffle straps add a sweet touch. Wear it with flip-flops for a relaxed resort casual look, or dress it up with sandals for dinner. Don’t forget a cute cardigan for those chilly evenings.

Airy Gauze Tiered Maxi Dress From J.Crew

Maxi dresses are my favorite for just about anything! This one is lightweight, flowy, and perfect for strolling the deck in the evening. It’s available in dusty brick, black, or white, so you can choose your vibe. I’d pair this with sandals and a lightweight denim jacket. I love that this would work for daytime excursions or evening events as well.

Cabana Dress in Linen From J.Crew

You know I had to include something linen. Would it be a vacation without it?? This dress is what I call a “throw on and go” piece. It works as a beach cover-up or a cute look for sightseeing. The relaxed fit means you’ll be comfortable all day, and you can wear it with sneakers or flip-flops, depending on your plans.

Smoothing Square Neck Ruched Swim Dress From Lands’ End

Women’s Smoothing Square Neck Ruched Swim Dress Swimsuit

I’ve been assured that you should have at least two swimsuits with you on a cruise. This is perfect for when you want a little extra coverage without sacrificing style. The ruched fabric is super flattering, and the square neckline adds a classy touch. This is perfect for lounging by the pool or heading to a shore excursion on a private island.

Leather Threaded Cut-Out Slides From Talbots

A cute pair of sandals is a must, and these are both stylish and comfy. The cut-out detail adds a little flair, and they go with everything from casual dresses to capris. You’ll want these for strolling the cruise ship or heading to a celebration night on board. They are 100% leather and also come in black. If you’re in between sizes, size down.

Capri Buckle Sandals From J.Crew

These sandals are simple but elegant. The buckle detail makes them look polished, and they work well with jeans, skirts, or dresses. If you’re heading to a resort wear dinner or just walking around a port town, these are a great pick. I’d wear these on the ship, but if you’re heading off to explore town, you’d be better off with more cushion.

New Balance Women’s 515 V3 Sneaker From Amazon

Did someone say “more cushion?” A good pair of sneakers is a MUST for all the walking that you’ll do on a cruise. These have great support and come in a bunch of colors, but I don’t think you can go wrong with this white/tan combo. Whether you’re exploring a port or just want a comfy option for the deck, these are a solid pick. You can’t go wrong with New Balance.

CUSHIONAIRE Women’s Fame Recovery Cloud Slide From Amazon

If you’re looking for the comfiest flip-flops, these are it! They have a cushy sole, great reviews, and come in a whole bunch of colors. These are perfect for slipping on and off when heading to the pool or grabbing a quick bite. I love that they’re waterproof, and the buckles are adjustable, so you don’t have to worry about blisters.

Lightweight Rain Jacket From Amazon

A rain jacket is a must in case of unexpected showers. This one is lightweight and packs easily, so you can toss it in your bag for a shore excursion. There are a ton of colors at the link, but I always go for bright and bold options. Not only will it help brighten your mood, but you’ll also be easy to find in the cruise crowd.

When packing for a cruise, you want daytime casual clothes that are comfy, stylish, and easy to mix and match. These pieces will keep you looking fabulous whether you’re on sea days, port days, or anything in between. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post, where I’ll be talking about nighttime wear for a cruise. Happy cruising, Gurls!

I am working on my clothes this week. Bon Voyage to your sister. You and Joe should join them. I saw your comment below, 40 years!! For me, 40 weeks is too long between cruises.

    1. Lol! Joe doesn’t think he would like a cruise, but I’m trying to change his mind.

  21. Found it! Funny spot! 😀 I enjoyed your mini instagram tutorial for Merit ! It’s helpful to see you apply the lipliner. I need practice!

As a reminder, cruise lines across the board do not allow irons or steamers. Fabric release spray or steam from the shower are the only options for wrinkled clothing. Choose fabrics very carefully. Every once in a while there are guest laundry facilities on board for DIY care.

    1. Thanks for the reminder. I haven’t been on a cruise in 40 years. I’m sure a lot has changed since then.
