4 Clothing Brands I Rely On for Comfortable, Polished Style Over 50

Gurls, I’m at that age where if something is uncomfortable, itchy, too tight, or requires me to suck it in all day, I’m simply not buying it. Lol! I still want to look stylish, polished, and current, but I don’t think we should have to be miserable to do it.

Thankfully, comfortable clothing has come a LONG way.

Over the years, I’ve learned which brands I can turn to when I want clothes that feel good but still look polished. These aren’t four brands I picked because they happened to have cute things online this week. I’ve personally worn and ordered from all four of them, and I continue to go back because I’ve had good luck finding pieces that balance comfort with the pulled-together look I prefer.

Of course, no brand gets every single item right for every single woman. Fit varies from style to style, and what feels wonderful on me may not work exactly the same on you. But if comfortable, stylish clothing is high on your priority list, these are four brands I think are worth knowing.

Tommy Bahama for Relaxed, Polished Style

I used to think of Tommy Bahama mostly as tropical prints and vacation clothes, but the brand has become one I check much more often. They still do relaxed resort-style clothing beautifully, but I’ve also found plenty of pieces that work for regular everyday life.

The overall feeling is casual and relaxed, but not sloppy. That is an important distinction for me.

Tommy Bahama x Stetson Bandana Bay Midi Shirt Dress

This Tommy Bahama x Stetson Bandana Bay Midi Shirt Dress caught my eye because it takes a classic shirtdress and gives it a little Western personality.

The bandana-inspired print makes it more interesting than a basic solid dress, while the midi length keeps the overall look polished. I also like a shirtdress because you can change the personality simply by changing the shoes and accessories.

This one could easily go casual with boots or flats, or you could dress it up a little for dinner. Tommy Bahama’s collaboration with Stetson definitely leans more Western than the brand’s usual coastal style, which makes it especially fun for fall.

Alma Mar Classic Flannel Shirt

Now, you gurls know I’m not normally a big flannel/plaid shirt gurl. Give me a pretty blouse or a V-neck sweater any day. Lol!

But I really like the look of this Alma Mar Classic Flannel Shirt. The plaid has that classic fall feel without looking like something I borrowed out of Joe’s closet.

I’d wear it with dark-wash jeans and loafers or boots and keep everything else simple. When a print already has plenty going on, I don’t think the rest of the outfit needs to compete for attention.

Coastalina Linen Relaxed Shirt

I included the Tommy Bahama Coastalina Linen Relaxed Shirt because not every day in early fall actually feels like fall. Here in Tennessee, Mother Nature can apparently look at the calendar and say, “September? Never heard of her.” Lol!

A linen button-front shirt is one of those pieces that works beautifully during that in-between weather. The relaxed cut keeps it casual, and you can wear it buttoned, open over a tank, or layered under a lightweight jacket once the temperatures cool.

I like pieces like this because they don’t have a one-month expiration date. You can wear them through several seasons simply by changing what you put with them.

Talbots for Classic, Polished Style

Talbots has been one of my go-to brands for years, and you’ve seen me wear their clothing over and over again here on the blog.

One reason I keep returning is that their style tends to be classic without feeling completely disconnected from what is current. I can usually find jeans, pants, sweaters, jackets, and dresses that work with things I already have in my closet.

And Joe is almost guaranteed to compliment me when I’m wearing Talbots. I don’t know if they secretly send him a memo, but he is remarkably consistent. Lol!

Herringbone Fit & Flare Midi Dress

This Talbots Herringbone Fit & Flare Midi Dress is a beautiful example of why I like Talbots for fall.

The herringbone pattern gives it a classic look, while the contrasting tipped detail adds enough definition to keep it from feeling plain. I also like the shape of a fit-and-flare dress because it gives the waist some definition and then has more room through the skirt.

I haven’t personally worn this exact dress, so I can’t tell you how the fabric feels or how it fits in person. But based on the silhouette and styling, this is one I would look at for church, a luncheon, dinner, or a fall event.

I’d keep the accessories fairly simple and let the pattern and trim do most of the work.

Voile Fit and Flare Shirtdress

Chocolate brown is one of the colors I’m wearing a lot right now, so naturally this Talbots Voile Fit and Flare Shirtdress gets my attention.

I love the feminine ruffle detail, and the shirtdress styling gives it enough structure to look polished. Brown is also much easier to mix and match than some women realize. Try it with cream, camel, burgundy, denim, olive, or even a soft blue.

This is another piece that could transition nicely between seasons. Change sandals for loafers or boots, add a cardigan or jacket, and suddenly the same dress has a completely different look.

Quince for Elevated Everyday Basics

Quince has become one of those brands I check regularly, especially when I’m looking for simple pieces that can be worn several different ways.

I own quite a few things from Quince, so I’m speaking from actual experience here. I’ve found some real winners, although just like every retailer, I don’t expect every single item to work perfectly for every body.

Where Quince really shines for me is in basics. These are often the clothes that don’t look terribly exciting hanging on a rack but end up being the pieces you actually wear.

CloudComfort Half Zip Sweatshirt and Wide Leg Pants

Now THIS is comfort. I wore the CloudComfort Half Zip Sweatshirt and CloudComfort Wide Leg Pants to my eye doctor appointment recently, and I was extremely comfortable but still felt like I looked put together. That is exactly what I want from casual clothing.

I’m wearing a large in the half-zip and a medium in the pants. The wide-leg silhouette keeps the pants from looking like traditional sweatpants, and pairing the set with pointed flats instead of sneakers dresses it up just enough.

You could certainly wear sneakers with it for travel, walking, or errands. But switching to a polished flat is an easy trick when you want comfortable clothes to look a little less like loungewear.

This is the kind of outfit I’d happily wear on a travel day, to an appointment, running errands, or working around the house when I still need to leave at some point.

Quince Linen Shirt

A simple Quince Linen Shirt is exactly the kind of piece I mean.

You can wear a linen shirt buttoned with jeans or pants, leave it open as a lightweight third piece, or use it as an extra layer over a dress.

This photo is a good example. I wore my Linen Shirt over a long dress, which gave me another layer without making the outfit feel heavy.

That is one of the things I look for more and more when I shop. I don’t need clothing that can only be worn one particular way. Give me something I can move around my closet and style with several outfits, and I’m much more likely to get my money’s worth.

Chico’s for Comfortable Pieces With Personality

Chico’s is another brand I’ve worn for years, and I especially like it when I’m looking for something with a little more personality.

You’ll find plenty of solids and basics there, but Chico’s has never been afraid of prints, interesting details, or statement pieces. I know some women shy away from those after 50 because they worry about looking too loud. I don’t think we need to disappear just because we’ve had a few more birthdays.

The trick is simply choosing the pieces that feel like YOU.

Travelers Leopard Boatneck Midi Dress

The Chico’s Travelers™ Leopard Boatneck Midi Dress immediately caught my attention because it combines a simple midi silhouette with a bold animal print.

Animal print comes and goes as a “trend,” but it never really disappears. If you already love leopard, there is no reason to wait for somebody to tell you it is back in style.

I haven’t worn this exact dress, so I’m not going to tell you how it feels or fits. What I do like is the simple shape. With a print this noticeable, you don’t need a lot of extra design details.

I would probably add black, chocolate brown, or tan shoes and let the dress be the star.

Faux Suede Long Sleeve Shirtdress

This Faux Suede Long Sleeve Shirtdress has such a rich fall look.

The long sleeves, collared shirtdress styling, and neutral color make it feel polished but still easy to accessorize. Since I haven’t worn this particular dress, I can’t personally speak to how soft the faux suede feels or how much give the fabric has, and those are two things I would pay attention to before ordering.

Style-wise, though, I love it.

You could wear it with boots for a stronger fall look or keep it lighter with a loafer or flat. A neutral dress also gives you plenty of room to play with accessories. Burgundy, animal print, dark brown, gold, or even a pretty scarf could completely change it.

Printed Georgette Ruffled Tie-Neck Blouse

This Chico’s Printed Georgette Ruffled Tie-Neck Blouse is for the gurl who wants her jeans to look a little more dressed up.

The print, ruffled neckline, and tie detail give the blouse plenty of visual interest, so I would keep the bottom half simple. Dark-wash jeans or solid trousers would be my first choice.

That is one of my favorite ways to dress as we move into fall. I don’t necessarily need an entirely “dressy” outfit. Sometimes all it takes is switching a T-shirt for a pretty blouse, adding a nice shoe and earrings, and your jeans suddenly look ready for dinner.

What I Look for in Comfortable Clothing After 50

Comfort means something different to me now than it did years ago. I don’t just mean clothing that is soft.

I look at how something fits through the waist, how easily I can sit and move in it, where the sleeves hit, whether the fabric feels scratchy, and if I’m going to spend the whole day adjusting it.

I also ask myself one very practical question: Where am I actually going to wear this? That question has saved me from quite a few purchases.

Something can be comfortable and still sit untouched in the closet because it doesn’t fit your real life. I want clothes that work for appointments, church, dinner, travel, family gatherings, errands, and all the other things I actually do.

I also want to be able to mix them with things I already own. If a new blouse needs new pants, new shoes, AND a new jacket before I can wear it, that blouse is getting expensive in a hurry. Lol!

Comfortable and Stylish Can Absolutely Go Together

I don’t believe turning 50, 60, or beyond means we have to choose between looking good and feeling good.

I’ve done enough suffering for fashion in my lifetime. I wore the shoes. I buttoned the jeans. I survived. Lol!

These days, I want clothing that lets me get dressed, feel confident, and then forget about what I’m wearing.

Tommy Bahama, Talbots, Quince, and Chico’s are four brands I continue to shop because I’ve personally had good experiences with them and can usually find pieces that fit the way I actually live.

You may not love every item I love, and that’s perfectly fine. Our bodies, lifestyles, and personal styles are different. But hopefully seeing the brands I return to gives you a good starting point the next time you’re looking for something comfortable that still feels polished.
