Best Wide Leg Pants for Women Over 50 & How to Style Them
Gurls, let’s talk about the best wide-leg pants for women over 50 and, just as importantly, how to style them! If you haven’t jumped on this trend yet, what are you waiting for? Wide-leg pants are not only stylish, but they’re also comfortable, flattering, and surprisingly versatile. Whether you’re dressing them up for a polished look or keeping them casual for everyday wear, I’ll share some easy styling tips to help you create a balanced, chic outfit. Let’s dive into some fabulous finds that will have you looking modern and confident in wide-leg pants!
Why Women Over 50 Should Try Wide-Leg Pants
- They’re flattering on all body types – The relaxed fit balances wider hips and thighs, creating a lean, elongated silhouette.
- They’re versatile – You can dress them up or down depending on the occasion.
- They’re modern yet classic – Wide-leg pants have been a timeless staple that never goes out of style.
- They’re comfortable – Unlike skinny jeans (which, let’s be honest, can be a little restrictive), wide-leg pants offer breathability and movement.
How to Style Wide-Leg Pants for a Flattering Look
1. Balance the Volume with the Right Tops
Since wide-leg pants have extra volume, it’s best to pair them with more fitted or structured tops to create a balanced look.
Great options for tops:
- Fitted tees & tanks (great for layering under a blazer or cardigan)
- Cropped sweaters & jackets (help define the waist)
- Blouses with a tucked-in waist (create a polished, put-together look)
- Wrap tops or peplum styles (enhance curves while defining the waist)
Avoid: Super boxy or oversized tops that add too much volume and can overwhelm your frame.
Can petites wear wide-leg pants?
Absolutely! If you’re petite, opt for a high-waisted pair with a slimmer leg to avoid looking overwhelmed by too much fabric. Pair them with a shorter or tucked-in top to elongate your frame.

Linen pants are a warm-weather essential, and these wide leg beauties are no exception. Found it. Today, I wore a pair of barrel jeans with a rib v-neck top and felt very comfortable and well put together. Because of your style tips and encouragement to step out of our comfort zone! I’m so thankful for you and how you help those of us whom are stuck in what we “always” wear.
Shirley!!! I love that you stepped out of your comfort zone. It isn’t easy to do, but it is so rewarding!

I miss reading the comments people used to make – now they just say found it.
They do both. I think the ones who never commented are the ones who just say found it.

I have several wide leg pants and jeans. For me, the ones that work are not too wide so not as much fabric which can overwhelm.
There are several styles of wide leg jeans, so finding the best one for your body type is key.
I haven’t yet jumped on the wide trouser leg style. I have an apple body shape and just don’t know how or if the style would look good on me, as I usually wear tops that are longer and flowy enough to cover my mid-section. Do you have any tips for us apple-shaped ladies?
Elaine, it can be done. You might have to try a few different items to see which works best for you. Look for a mid or high-rise pair with a structured waistband to define your waist. Pair them with a flowy or V-neck top that skims (not clings) to your midsection, and try a half-tuck for shape. Adding a structured blazer or open cardigan helps create a long, lean look. Finish with pointed-toe shoes or heels to elongate your legs!

I’ve been on board with wide leg pants and jeans since they came back. I’m petite and follow the advice you gave. The ones I have don’t overwhelm me and make my legs look longer. You look sharp in all the ones you styled.

Well, this is the first time I couldn’t find it. I guess I should just be proud that I’ve done well until now. :/ I’ll probably go back later and look again, because that’s how I am! lol
Wide leg pants are super comfy. I’m kind of dreading when they aren’t so popular.
So many women refuse to try them, but they’ll be hooked if they do. Lol! I’ll give you a hint…look at the red floral photo.
I ended up finding it just after I posted that. And couldn’t believe I missed it (so many times)! lol
All I wear are wide leg or trouser jeans because I have a prosthetic and the leg of pant has to be wide enough to add more socks during the day. I’m thankful they have a variety to choose from. Thanks for your suggestions!
I hadn’t thought about that, but it sounds like a great solution. I’m glad they work so well for you.
When I broke my ankle in 1995, I wore wide leg flowy pants over my cast. I couldn’t wear shorts to work so they worked great.

Thank you for sharing this. I have sent so many wide leg pants back cause I didn’t like the look but now i know why it was the tops not the pants i was trying to put with them. I have a couple of pair that should come in today so will match them with slimmer tops. I like banjo man I would’ve taken a picture of him too.
Stella, be sure to comment back once you’ve tried slimmer tops. Adding a shoe with height helps too, such as a platform or wedge.

I think that the tin man is awesome! Like you, I would take a picture of him. Noticing it means that you look for the simple things in life that give us reason to smile. I own numerous pairs of wide leg pants that I enjoy wearing. I have learned that if I will order them in petite (I’m 5’ 6”), it’s easier to make them ankle length, to show off my footwear.
Found it! I have been in the fence about wide leg pants. Now that I have some great ideas on how to style them I think I will buy a pair. Thanks😊
