Let’s Talk About That Summer Glow… Without the Regret

I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten a whole lot more careful about my skin as I’ve gotten older.

Looking back, I couldn’t have been less careful in my 20s. Does anyone else remember lying out with iodine and baby oil? I still cringe thinking about it.

These days, I still love having a little color. A bit of glow just makes everything look better. Your legs look smoother, your arms look more toned, and your outfit suddenly feels more put-together.

But here’s the part nobody really talks about…

Self-tanner doesn’t behave the same on mature skin as it used to.

It can settle into dry spots.
It can grab onto texture.
And sometimes it highlights the very things you were trying to soften.

If you’ve ever tried it and thought, “Well… that didn’t go as I planned,” you’re not alone. The good news is, it’s not you. It’s just about using it a little differently now.

The Honest Truth: What Self-Tanner Can (and Can’t) Do

I wanted to show real results, because I think we’ve all seen those perfect before-and-afters that don’t tell the whole story.

As you can see in my photos below, the self-tanner gave my legs a warm, sun-kissed glow and made everything look more even and “finished.”

But here’s the honest part…

It doesn’t erase sunspots.

And sometimes, those spots can even look a little darker at first. That’s because self-tanner reacts with the surface of your skin, and areas with more pigment or texture can absorb more color.

But here’s why I still use it… When my skin is pale, every little spot stands out. When I add a bit of warmth, everything blends together better. It’s not about covering, it’s about softening.

And honestly, that’s good enough for me.

My Best Tips for Getting a Natural Glow After 50

  • Mix with lotion if you want a softer, more forgiving first layer
  • Don’t over-apply; one light layer is better than two heavy ones
  • Dab moisturizer on darker spots before applying (the Q-tip trick)
  • Hydration is everything; dry skin is where things go wrong
  • Exfoliate gently, not aggressively

The Self-Tanners I’ve Used Recently

I’ve used Loving Tan, St. Tropez, Coco & Eve, and quite a few others over the years.

Lately, I went back to Loving Tan because I trust the color. I don’t want orange, I don’t want streaky, and I definitely don’t want anything that makes me look like I tried too hard.

I used the Self-Tanning Mousse for the color you see here, and I’ve been using the Gradual Self-Tanning Lotion in between to help it last longer without having to start over every few days.

Before and 2 Hours After

Before and 2 Hours After

You can see the difference after just a couple of hours. My legs look more even, a little smoother, and just healthier overall.

That’s really my goal at this stage, not perfection, just a more polished look.

The Best Self-Tanners for Mature Skin (By Category)

If You Want Quick Color (Fast Results, Event-Ready)

These are the ones you reach for when something pops up, and you don’t have time to plan ahead.

Loving Tan 2 HR Express Mousse, Gradual Lotion, and Face Serum

2 HR Express Face Self-Tanning Serum | 8 HR Deluxe Gradual Self-Tanning Lotion | 2 Hr Express Platinum Self-Tanning Mousse

I’ve used Loving Tan for years, and I keep coming back to it because the color just works. It’s one of the few that doesn’t turn orange on me, which is always my biggest concern.

The mousse gives quick, noticeable color, while the gradual lotion helps maintain it without getting patchy. The face serum is great when I want a little glow without worrying about buildup in fine lines.

Why it works:

  • Natural-looking color, not orange
  • Smooth application with a mitt
  • Great for maintaining an even glow

b.tan Violet Self Tanner Kit – 1 Hour Express

B.Tan is one is for those “I need color right now” moments. It develops quickly and has a violet base that helps cancel out any yellow or orange tones. The result looks surprisingly natural for something that works this fast.

I’d use this before a last-minute event when I don’t have time to plan ahead.

Why it works:

  • Great for quick touch-ups
  • Fast results
  • Helps neutralize orange tones

St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse

The St. Tropez Express is fast-acting and super customizable. Leave it on for 1 hour for a light tan, or 3 hours for a deeper glow. It dries quickly and doesn’t have that annoying, strong scent. The finish is even, and it fades gradually over time. Ideal for women over 50 who want something reliable and fuss-free.

Why it works:

  • Customizable color
  • Dries quickly
  • Reliable results

Body Drench Quick Tan Lotion

This is a great grab-and-go option when you want quick results. It goes on like a regular lotion but gives you noticeable color pretty fast. I like options like this when I want a quick boost for my legs before dinner, church, or an event, and don’t want to do a full self-tanning routine.

Why it works:

  • Good for a fast touch-up or last-minute glow
  • Quick, noticeable color
  • The lotion format feels easier for some women to apply

If You Want a Deeper, More Noticeable Tan (Mousse Formulas)

These give you more color, but still look natural when applied correctly.

Coco & Eve Self Tanner Mousse Kit – Sunny Honey Bali Bronzing

I finally tried the Coco & Eve Self Tanner, and now I understand why everyone talks about it.

It goes on smoothly, smells better than most self-tanners, and gives a really pretty, even color. The guide color makes it easier to see where you’re applying, which helps avoid streaks.

Why it works:

  • Easy application
  • Even coverage
  • Natural finish

Norvell Sunless Self Tanner Mousse with Bronzer

The Norvell with Bronzer gives a natural, golden tan and is a favorite among spray tan pros. The mousse glides on easily, blends well, and doesn’t streak if you use a mitt. It’s great for older skin because it doesn’t cling to dry spots. It would be great when you want to look bronzed but not overly dramatic.

Bondi Sands

Bondi Sands is an Aussie favorite, and it’s easy to see why; it’s lightweight, streak-free, and smells like a tropical vacation! It’s enriched with aloe vera and coconut, so it hydrates while it bronzes. The foam glides on smoothly, blends easily with a mitt, and dries quickly (a must when you’re running around getting ready for a big day). The color is natural and buildable, great for fair to medium skin tones.

Why it works:

  • Hydrating
  • Smooth application
  • Buildable color

L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Water Mousse

L’Oreal self-tanning water mousse is a lightweight version that’s easy to apply, and it dries fast. The mousse has an airy texture and blends beautifully onto mature skin. It’s got a subtle scent and doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. Use this if you want something you can apply quickly after a shower and be dressed in no time.

Why it works:

  • Fast-drying
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use

St. Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse

Let’s face it -St. Tropez has been around forever. It’s the original go-to tanner, a classic, and it still holds up. The St. Tropez Self Tan Classic gives a beautiful, golden color that develops in 4–8 hours. It’s streak-free when applied with a mitt, and the color lasts several days. Great for special occasions or a polished look. This is one I’d use before a beach trip or when I want to look extra put-together.

Why it works:

  • Classic formula with dependable results
  • Natural golden color
  • Great for a polished, even finish

St. Moriz Professional Self Tanner Mousse

This is a more affordable option that still gives beautiful results. It has aloe vera and vitamin E, which help keep the skin from looking dry or patchy.

I like mousses like this when I want deeper color, but still want something that feels easy to blend and forgiving enough that I’m not panicking while I apply it. Lol!

Why it works:

  • Affordable option
  • Aloe vera and vitamin E help with dryness
  • Gives deeper color without looking harsh

If You Want Easy, Low-Maintenance Glow (Gradual Tanners)

These are the most forgiving, and honestly, what I’d recommend if you’re just starting out.

Jergens Natural Glow + Firming Self Tanner Lotion

Jergens Natural Glow is a lotion that delivers a natural-looking glow and contains firming ingredients such as collagen and elastin. Yes, ma’am! It’s subtle and gradual, making it great for everyday use. And it’s moisturizing, which helps reduce the look of crepey skin. This one is a solid choice for your daily routine, especially if you don’t want to deal with mitts or mousse.

Why it works:

  • Easy daily use
  • Hydrating
  • Subtle, natural color

Beauty by Earth Tanning Lotion – Gradual Tanner

If you want a more subtle, buildable tan, the Beauty by Earth lotion is the way to go. It’s made with organic ingredients and has no strong smell, which I appreciate. This one’s perfect for fair to medium skin and for anyone easing into self-tanner life. I’d use this after a shower and let it gradually deepen over a few days. Bonus: it’s gentle on sensitive skin!

Why it works:

  • Buildable color
  • Gentle on skin
  • No strong smell

Lux Unfiltered N°32 Gradual Self Tanner

This gradual self-tanner feels a little more elevated and skincare-focused. It’s packed with hydrating ingredients like shea butter and squalane, so it leaves your skin feeling soft instead of dry. The finish is very natural and glowy, not heavy or fake. It’s perfect if you want that “I just got back from vacation” look.

Why it works:

  • Hydrating
  • Soft, natural finish
  • Great for dry skin

If You’re Nervous About Your Face (Start Here)

Face tanning is where things can go wrong quickly, so I always keep this simple.

Self-Tanning Drops for Face

beauty by earth self tanner tanning drops

These self-tanning drops are perfect for the face because you can mix them right into your moisturizer. That means you stay in control of how much color you get. I love this for mature skin because it avoids buildup in fine lines and keeps the skin looking natural. It’s one of the easiest ways to add a little glow without changing your whole routine.

Why it works:

  • Customizable
  • No buildup in fine lines
  • Easy to use

St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Face Mist

Here’s a different take on self-tanning. The St. Tropez Self Tan Face Mist is a clear spray that feels like water but gives you the prettiest golden glow. It’s got color-correcting properties and works beautifully on uneven skin tones. Spritz this on and blend with a mitt. Perfect for layering under makeup or adding a subtle glow to the neck and chest!

Why it works:

  • Lightweight
  • Easy application
  • Natural finish

A Few Questions You Might Be Asking

Will self-tanner settle into wrinkles?
It can if your skin is dry, which is why hydration makes such a big difference.

Will it make my sunspots darker?
A little, but overall, your skin will look more even.

What’s the easiest option if I’m new?
A gradual lotion, no question.

Do I really need a mitt?
Yes. Unless you want your hands to give you away.

The Bottom Line

Self-tanner isn’t about looking like you just got back from a beach trip. It’s about taking your skin from looking a little flat… to looking alive.

It softens everything, evens things out, and gives you that little boost where you catch yourself in the mirror and think…“Okay… that looks better.”

And honestly, that’s enough for me.

  1. 😀. Thanks for this deep dive into self tanners. So many great suggestions!

  2. ☺️I’ve only ever bought the Jergens and I was too nervous to even try it! I think I may try it again if it does indeed help with crepey skin.

  3. Thank you for the wide variety of self tanners
The Jergens has always been my go to
Hoping your daughter is continuing to heal and doing well

  4. :} I am another person who did the baby oil and iodine. How crazy were we?

Oh my goodness! You are telling the truth. Just a little of sun and fun when I was younger and I am paying for it. I just want a little “glow” if that’s possible. Jergen’s I have used but I have to be careful because it leaves weird tiny spots – noticeably probably to only me. I need to try Cocoa & Eve. You are so right about mixing it with regular body lotion. Loved all the suggestions because I need something that will give me a bit of color! Thank you!

  6. 🙂 I remember only too well using baby oil and reflector blankets to get a good tan when I was growing up and into my twenties. I should have listened to my mother when she told me not to. LOL I do still tan when I go out but now I use a 15 spf and apply it often. I put a sunblock on my face and use tinted moisturizer to get the tan look. In the past I’ve used ther Jergens self tanning when it’s not summertime and I needed the tanned legs. But I think I would like to try the L’Oreal self tanning water mouse now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

🙂 Self tanners have come a long way from the QT days that turned you orange.

  8. Karen Nau says:

When Mother Nature, decided to have a heatwave a month ago (still Winter), I reached for the self tanner lotion, I had from last year, Sally Hansen brand. I used a salt scrub in the shower, also shaved my legs, before using the lotion. I also used some Skin So Soft on my legs to moisturize. Put on a sun dress and went to church. During Mass service, (to my embarrassment), I noticed that I had left behind some oily tanning solution on the kneeler. Made a note to myself, that the combination was not a good one and quickly cleaned the kneeler with a tissue.

  9. Haven’t used all winter so this was perfect post today! Even with the cold snaps need to prep for warmer weather! I know it’ll be here soon! 🙏😀

  10. 🙂 The Jergens tanner works well for me.
