Jewelry Organization Ideas for Home and Travel

I don’t know about you, but my jewelry seems to have a way of getting tangled no matter how carefully I put it away. Necklaces become knotted, earrings lose their mates, and somehow the bracelet I was looking for yesterday magically appears a week later.

I lose and find things so often that nobody even helps me look anymore. They know it’ll eventually turn up in a random purse pocket, suitcase, or drawer. Lol!

And apparently, my closet isn’t the only thing around here that needs a good purge. I recently started looking at my jewelry collection and realized I have another organizing project waiting on me.

A good jewelry organizer can certainly make getting dressed easier, but before buying another box, tray, or cabinet, it helps to figure out what you actually need to store.

Today, I’m sharing several jewelry organization ideas for home and travel, along with a peek at the situation I’m currently dealing with myself.

Before You Buy Another Jewelry Organizer, Look at What You Own

This is where I probably need to take my own advice. I already have several jewelry organizers, but most of them are overcrowded.

The white boxes off to the side are full, the colorful bags you can see are full, and even some of my travel jewelry organizers have become permanent storage.

That is usually a pretty good sign that the problem isn’t necessarily a lack of storage. Sometimes it means we simply have too much jewelry for the storage we already own.

I noticed the same thing when I started cleaning out my closet. More hangers weren’t going to solve the problem. I needed to decide what I actually wanted to keep.

Jewelry can be the same way.

Before buying another organizer, I think it helps to ask:

• Do I still wear this?
• Is it damaged or missing a stone?
• Do I own several pieces that are almost identical?
• Am I keeping something simply because I’ve had it forever?
• Would someone else enjoy it more than I do?

I’m not saying you have to get rid of Grandma’s pearls. Sentimental jewelry gets a pass.

But that necklace you haven’t worn since 2012 and don’t even remember buying? We might need to have a little talk. Lol!

My Over-the-Door Jewelry Storage Needs a Purge Too

Then there is this over-the-door jewelry organizer. This one is over-the-hill old, and no longer available. It is full of pieces I’ve loved and worn over the years, but I can already see quite a few things that I haven’t reached for recently.

I like hanging organizers because they make jewelry easy to see. If I can’t see something, there is a very good chance I’m going to forget I own it. The downside is that they can become a holding zone for jewelry we’re no longer wearing.

I’ll tackle that another day. One purge at a time, gurls. I’m still recovering from my closet. Lol!

Jewelry Boxes for Everyday Pieces

If you wear jewelry often, a traditional jewelry box is one of the easiest ways to keep your everyday pieces together.

I especially like organizers with separate spaces for rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Throwing everything into one drawer is how you end up spending twenty minutes trying to untangle three necklaces when you’re already running late.

And then you have this over-the-door jewelry hanger, full of pieces I’ve loved for a long time but haven’t worn recently. I can already see a lot of pieces that I’m willing to part with, but that will be for another day.

AKOZLIN 6-Tier Jewelry Box Organizer

If you have a fairly large jewelry collection but don’t want a full cabinet, this organizer has six tiers of storage. It includes different compartments for rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and other pieces, which can help keep jewelry from rubbing together or becoming tangled.

I also like that it provides a lot of storage vertically instead of taking over an entire dresser. This would make the most sense for someone who has already edited down her collection and still legitimately needs plenty of storage.

Because I have learned one thing lately: buying a larger organizer is much easier than getting rid of things. Lol!

360° Rotating Jewelry Box With 5 Drawers

This rotating jewelry organizer is a little different from a traditional box. The five-drawer design rotates, so you can access different sections without pulling a large box toward you or digging through stacked trays.

I can see this working especially well on a vanity or dresser where counter space is limited.

The vertical footprint is also helpful if you have a lot of jewelry but don’t want something huge sitting out.

Voova Jewelry Box Organizer

If you prefer a more traditional jewelry box, this two-layer version is a simpler option. It has separate sections for different types of jewelry, along with a removable tray so you can access pieces stored underneath.

A smaller organizer like this may actually be the better choice if you are trying to keep your jewelry collection edited.

Sometimes having a limited amount of space forces us to keep only what we really enjoy wearing. Funny how that works.

Jewelry Storage That Lets You See What You Own

I have learned that I wear things more often when I can actually see them.

The same thing happens with clothing. If something gets shoved to the back of the closet, I tend to forget about it. Jewelry isn’t much different.

Leather Jewelry Case Storage Display Holder

This style of jewelry organizer keeps pieces separated while making it easier to see your collection. I like the idea of this type of storage for everyday pieces because you aren’t digging through a deep jewelry box trying to remember where you put something.

It would also work nicely for costume jewelry or statement pieces that you want to keep protected but accessible.

Jewelry Cabinets for Larger Collections

There comes a point when a tabletop jewelry box just isn’t going to cut it. Ask me how I know. Lol!

If you have a larger collection and truly wear most of it, a jewelry cabinet can give necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings their own dedicated space.

The Pippa Wood Jewelry Cabinet is definitely more of a furniture piece than a basic organizer. It gives you significantly more storage than a standard jewelry box while keeping everything tucked away behind doors.

I like this type of option for a bedroom or dressing area because it looks intentional instead of like another plastic storage container. It is certainly an investment compared to a small jewelry box, so I would only go this route if you genuinely need the extra space.

Otherwise, you may just be buying your jewelry a bigger house. And I am currently trying to avoid doing exactly that.

The Stella Jewelry Box is another prettier option if your organizer is going to sit out on a vanity or dresser. It has a more decorative look than many of the purely functional jewelry organizers.

For jewelry that you wear regularly, having an attractive box sitting where you get ready can make it easier to put things back where they belong. That last part is key.

An organizer only works if we actually use it.

How to Keep Necklaces From Getting Tangled

Necklaces are probably my biggest jewelry storage headache. The easiest solution is to keep them separated instead of stacking them together.

Hooks, individual compartments, necklace rolls, and hanging jewelry organizers all help because each necklace has its own space.

For delicate chains, I would avoid tossing several into one compartment. They will eventually find a way to tie themselves into a knot that looks like it requires an engineering degree to undo.

Longer necklaces can work especially well on hooks or hanging organizers.

Jewelry Organizers for Travel

Travel jewelry storage is one area where I think smaller is usually better. If I bring a huge jewelry case, I will inevitably fill it. For most trips, I only need a few earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and maybe a ring or two.

A compact travel jewelry organizer helps protect the pieces while keeping them from becoming tangled inside a suitcase.

Genuine Leather Travel Jewelry Organizer Case

This leather travel case has dedicated areas for rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets without taking up a lot of room. It also has a built-in mirror, which can be handy when you’re getting ready in a hotel room or somewhere with questionable lighting.

You know the kind.

Some hotel bathroom lighting makes you look twenty years younger, and some makes you wonder if you need to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist immediately. Lol!

The Primrose organizer has a zippered design that keeps jewelry contained while you’re traveling.

Separate compartments are especially useful for necklaces because they prevent everything from shifting around together inside your suitcase.

This size looks better suited for someone who likes to bring several jewelry options on vacation rather than just one or two everyday pieces.

Palm Paradise Travel Jewelry Case

The Palm Paradise Travel Case from Tommy Bahama is a fun option if you like your travel accessories to have a little personality. It is compact and designed specifically for jewelry, so it should be easier to pack than a full-sized organizer.

I also think a brightly patterned travel case can be easier to spot inside a suitcase, which isn’t a bad thing when you’re digging around trying to get ready.

Sonoma Goods for Life Hanging Jewelry Organizer

A hanging organizer can work well for travel, especially on longer trips. Instead of placing everything on a bathroom counter or dresser, you can hang the organizer in the closet and see your options at a glance.

This style could also work well at home if you’re short on drawer or dresser space.

What I’m Doing With the Jewelry I No Longer Wear

This is going to be the next step for me. Just like my closet cleanout, I don’t want to organize jewelry simply for the sake of making the mess prettier.

I want to keep the pieces I love, wear, or have a sentimental reason to hold onto. The rest can be donated, given to family, sold, or passed along to someone who will actually enjoy it.

I’m finding that the more I simplify things, the easier it is to see and appreciate what remains. Apparently that lesson applies to clothing, shoes, handbags, AND jewelry.

Who knew my word “simplify” was going to put me to this much work? Lol!

Final Thoughts on Jewelry Organization

The right jewelry organizer depends on your collection and how you actually get dressed. If you own mostly everyday jewelry, a smaller box with divided compartments may be all you need.

If you have lots of necklaces, hanging storage or hooks may make more sense.

A larger collection may justify a jewelry cabinet, while travelers will probably get more use from a compact zippered case.

But I’m learning not to automatically assume that more storage is the answer. Sometimes the first step is simply looking at what we already own and deciding what deserves the space.
