Ladies, let’s have a little heart-to-heart about something we all want: looking younger and feeling more vibrant. Who doesn’t love the idea of a wardrobe that flatters your figure and gives your skin that healthy, radiant glow? Here’s the truth: the colors you wear can completely transform how you look and feel. The right shades can brighten your face, highlight your best features, and give you that youthful, confident vibe we all adore. Today, we’re talking about the best colors for women over 50 based on your undertone. Whether you’re cleaning out your closet this spring or shopping for fresh new pieces, these tips will help you make choices that truly work for you!

Why Should Colors Matter to Women Over 50?

Have you ever worn something and had people tell you, “You look amazing!”? Chances are, the color you were wearing had a lot to do with it! As we age, our skin tone, hair color, and overall pigmentation change. That means the colors we wore in our 20s might not do us any favors now. But don’t worry… finding the right colors for this stage of life can be so much fun!

The right colors can:

  • Make your skin glow: Certain shades reflect light onto your face, making you look refreshed.
  • Brighten your eyes: The right hue can make your eyes pop and sparkle.
  • Give you confidence: When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows!

Disclaimer: I want my readers to wear what makes them happy! If there’s a color that you love, but it isn’t listed here as a “best color” for you, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear it! This is just meant to be a guide to help you when you are shopping for new pieces.

Now, let’s find your most flattering shades!

Universal Colors That Work for Everyone

Let’s start with the easy ones! These colors look fabulous on just about everyone and are guaranteed to give you a youthful boost. I’ve found a few items in each of these colors from our favorite retailers in case you want to add a piece or two in one of these colors to your closet!

Soft White

Soft white is such a flattering color because it brightens your face and gives your skin a healthy glow without the harshness of stark white. While stark white can sometimes feel too sharp or even wash you out, soft white has a creamy undertone that’s much gentler. It reflects light beautifully and even helps to create the look of a smoother complexion.

True Red

True red is not too warm and not too cool, so it looks great on just about everyone. That said, if you deal with rosacea or skin sensitivities that cause redness, true red might bring those tones out a bit more. Don’t worry though, you can still enjoy this gorgeous shade. Try wearing it in a fun accessory, like a scarf or a bag, to keep it away from your face while still rocking the look!

Eggplant

Why Pastels Are a Girl’s Best Friend

Ladies, if you haven’t embraced pastels yet, you’re missing out! These soft, muted shades are so flattering and can make you look fresh and youthful. Here are some of my favorite pastel shades:

  • Mint Green: Cool and calming, it’s a great choice for spring.

  1. Start Small: Not ready to go all-in on a bright, bold new color? Try a scarf, earrings, or even a handbag in a flattering color.

  3. Layer It Up: Add a colorful cardigan or jacket to a neutral base outfit.
  4. Choose Prints Wisely: Look for patterns that include your best colors to add visual interest.
  5. Keep It Close to Your Face: Tops, blouses, and scarves are great for showcasing colors that brighten your complexion!

  4. Tonya Cheatham says:

How do you know if you are warm or cold tone?

    1. You can determine your undertone by looking at the veins on your wrist—if they appear blue or purple, you likely have cool undertones, while greenish veins suggest warm undertones. Another test is how your skin reacts to jewelry: if gold flatters you more, you may have warm undertones, while silver tends to complement cool undertones.

  15. I’m loving these ideas. I’m especially looking at the “Camel” color…the cardigan knit button jacket. Do you have any information on the ivory button down shirt underneath it? I would love to find that too!

  16. Since I let my hair go natural silver/gray I have noticed some colors don’t look good on me anymore. I can wear vibrant colors and even light pink and blues. Chocolate brown and rust no longer look good on me. I noticed a very dark brown which is almost black does look on me. With my new hair color it’s like being on a new adventure. A man said he loved my hair when he opened a door for me as I was leaving a restaurant. And he wasn’t an old man. lol. No one ever said they loved my hair when I colored it.

  17. Janice Noce says:

I am so pleased to see some of my favorite colors here. Teal, purple but lighter, greens, yellows! I have red hair and some colors compete with my hair and somewhat red complexion! I am often given compliments on my clothes but never was sure they think I look good in the clothes! Thanks for all the photos of different ways to wear a color! As a child my Mother let me wear red as long as it was not right at my face. I had red shoes and a purse, with clothes that had red highlights. She was a genius! She was a fabulous seamstress and made many of my clothes including coats and dresses to match!

  18. Found it.

I love those gray suede boots! Where did you get them? Thanks for all the color suggestions!

    1. Delanie, I lov those boots too. They are by Talbots, but they sold out quickly!

Some of my favorite clothing colors are on your list! I’m a life-long fan of teal, mint green, seafoam green, turquoise, lavender, powder blue, and navy blue color palettes… “peaceful colors” that work well with my blonde hair, blue eyes, and medium toned complexion. Plus, they just make me happy! (PS, your painting activity with your daughter and granddaughter sounds like it was a lot of fun!)

  25. Susan Riley says:

Found it. Love the true red!

  26. Ginger Hiller says:

Fabulous scripture! Tania, thank you for all of the research you did to give us such helpful advice. All shades of pink is one of my favorite signature colors, so I have a lot of it in my closet. I’ve also found it beneficial to fill my wardrobe with only the colors that I look the best in instead of filling it with a bunch of different colors that do me no favors.

  27. Julie Crighton says:

I love wearing all the colors! I am cool complected, so those colors you listed are definitely my faves and look the best on me! Love your content!

  28. Carolyn (petite) says:

Great analysis! I love wearing color, especially the ones that make my face glow. As a gal with gently warm undertones, I can and do wear all the universal colors as well as the ones you noted for “warm undertones”. I can also pull off seafoam, as long as it’s not too pale. Pastels do me no favors.

  29. That teal print dress is gorgeous!

  30. found it.
Thank you for this post about colors that compliment your skin tone. It makes so much sense. Sometimes this is a real challenge.

  35. I have really enjoyed your blog. Lots of great looks and information.
I do have a question , what does TTS mean? It follows a note in the pictures and it’s usually after shoes. I just can’t figure it out.
    Thanks , KL

    1. Sorry, sometimes I spell it out, but TTS is much easier. It means true to size.

  42. Is there a simple way to figure out what your tones are? Not sure how to decide. There are some colors in each category that I wear, maybe a mistake.

    1. Teresa, they say you can tell by your veins, but honestly, I never could. I believe in wearing what you think looks best on you.

  43. Found it! Can’t wait for spring!

  44. Found it! Pastels and whites are a recipe for spills for me. jewel tones are my fav.

  45. Found it!
There is a lot of great information here – thanks for sharing this!

  60. Oh my goodness…I think you are doing a great job with the 🙂I read your blog every morning with my first cup of coffee, I used to find it easily but lately I have to scroll back through the pics and often still can’t locate! Maybe I need to read while enjoying my 2nd cup! Great post today…I still struggle a bit with what are my best colors..I’ve thought of having the color analysis done but at almost $400 I can’t bring myself to do that… I understand there are several factors involved and wonder if you know of a source with instructions to determine.

    1. I’ve never had my colors done. I probably wouldn’t listen to them even if I did. 🤣
